How Music Influences Social Change and Shapes Social Movements Have you ever stopped and thought about the music that serves as a back drop for major cultural movements in society. It has been a part of every major movement that has happened throughout history. Those in charge or lead these movements know that music can add additional power and emotion to help the cause. When you watch a documentary about the civil rights movement or the vietnam war there is always music in the background and as your listening to the narrarator its subconciously affecting you and adding an emotional edge to whats going on. It makes you feel like a part of the protest, and makes you want to get invested

Wikipedia describes a social movement as, "Social movents are a type of group action. They are large, sometimes informal, groupings of individuals or organizations which focus on specific political or social issues. In other words, they carry out, resist or undo a social change". Looking at this definition it is easy to see how music plays a part in this action. If there is one thing that most people have in common or you could say a common ground it is music, most poeple listen to and enjoy music. There are few things that cross race, religion, politics, culture as effectively as music does. With the advent of modern technology and social networking sites, music will continue to play an important role for future generations in social …show more content…
Culture and music are woven together you cant seperate them. You can use music itself as a tool to organize rally's and to get a movement going and keep it from stagnating. It allows you to find people who share the same views and there is power in numbers. It is a starting point to how to get people to gather in large numbers like a rally cry. You almost instinctively know that if there is an event that is promoting a band or music you like, you know there is going to be people there with the same political, social and ideals that you share. Would you want to go to listen to people preach a subject or would you rather go to a concert with bands that share the same outlook and views to hear a message. While attending an event with music everyone would feel emotionally tied together. Once you have many people in one area you could collect money, get people to commint to giving their time for grassroots activism and refine your message more. Music at this point becomes a shared part of the movement. This allows for further gains and bigger events. At some point with enough momentum and support people start to take notice of the cause or movement. At times this allows for signifigant changes in history of a particular era to cause change for years to come. For movements to get momentum and standout you need something extra and music provides this
Music is a very powerful expression of emotions that come together as a whole to morph your psychological feelings into a sub-reality vision. Over the many years, history has been able to capture the moments at which music has made an impact on human lives. We can start with Manu Chao the artist that sings about left-wing messages and portrays his concerts as “collective therapy”. Or Juan Gabriel the young man that rose out of poverty to become the world’s most beloved artist/songwriter and whose music carried a resonate flamboyant style. Music is a way of communication that is used in many realms such as entertainment, tradition religion and sporting events. So far this semester, Chic 316 has influenced me to seek a more coherent relationship
The United States had to go through some events, before entering the world war with Germany. The United States had entered the war because Germany attacked american ships, the Zimmerman note was sent to the Americans threatening the U.S. president. There was also an unrestricted submarine warfare, the selling of weapons, lending money to allies, and wanting to make the world safe for democracy. World War 1 passed through many events in order to start the war.
“What’s done cannot be undone,”(V,1,2188) are the words of a guilty, manipulative, and regretful character in Shakespeare's masterpiece Macbeth. That character is Lady Macbeth. The phrase “behind every great man is a great woman” is truly proven in this play. Lady Macbeth was the one who had Macbeth gain all the power she desired. She was the great woman who was behind the mighty king.
What is the purpose of music in society? Foremost, in layman terms, music is just sounds. However, individuals then use these sounds as a medium in order to spread certain ideas and emotions across society. Naturally over time different types of music become associated with different communities; thus, this identification creates an overgeneralized interpretation of who these communities are and what they stand for. One prime example is the stereotype that jazz and swing was the music of the African Americans in 20th century Los Angeles. Even though it may be true, the stereotype does not give an answer as to why or how jazz and swing became to be known as “black music”. In order to answer these questions, it is imperative to know what conditions
For as long as mankind has walked on this earth, music has been an important part of our culture and lifestyles. Each walk of life beats to a different drum. Different cultures use music for many aspects of their lives; for religious purposes, for celebrations, for comfort, for sorrow, for relaxation, for sports, for dances, for energy, for learning, for sleeping, and for sexual experiences. Everyone uses music for something. Music connects with people and reaches them in ways that words simply cannot. Music is a representation of what feelings sound like. It expresses emotion and brings that characteristic out from within us; it tells us a story. Every generation has its’ own sound and different music styles have emerged and become
Throughout the tumultuous events that Hester Prynne has had to face so far, she has undergone a dramatic change in her personality. She has become more cold, in a way; she is more serious and somber, perhaps because she has faced sin. But more so, I believe she changed in personality because she became a mother. She needed to become a stronger, more mature person to provide support for Pearl, who has already had the world against her (because she was born of adultery). Having sinned and faced punishment, Hester became a "harder" person.
From the Civil Rights Movement to the Black Lives Matter movement, music continue to be the expression of all that is contained in the movement. It shows the struggles, the passions, the history of the movements. It gives hope, brightens the day, rallies, and unifies the people of movements.
Music is an art form and source of power. Many forms of music reflect culture and society, as well as, containing political content and social message. Music as social change has been highlighted throughout the 20th century. In the 1960s the United States saw political and socially oriented folk music discussing the Vietnam War and other social issues. In Jamaica during the 1970s and 1980s reggae developed out of the Ghetto’s of Trench town and expressed the social unrest of the poor and the need to over-through the oppressors. The 1980’s brought the newest development in social and political music, the emergence of hip-hop and rap. This urban musical art form that was developed in New
To what extent can music provide a means of resistance for challenging the power relations of racism, class and gender?
It can change the way we carry ourselves or even the way we dress. Songs had a powerful grip and effect on society. Music can give us information or state an opinion. (White)
Throughout its history, music has permeated the significant events of American history. Its effect on American society and the way the American people cope with each event has only grown as popular music evolves and new genres reach more and more individuals. People can remember where they were and their exact surroundings to amazing detail when asked about life-changing events in history. Older generations will remember the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Their children will remember when Kennedy was assassinated and when man walked on the moon. Their grandchildren will remember much of the turmoil of the ‘70s and ‘80s and their great grandchildren grew up in the world impacted by the events of September 11, 2001. Even one’s surroundings during the start or end of a relationship or personal events such as graduation, getting a driver’s license, or getting married can all be paired with the music that was popular at the time.
Music has a dynamic ability of influencing emotions, from mood regulation to rumination and self-expression. The presence of political and social messages in popular music is frequently seen across cultures, in particular focusing on social issues and racism (Back, 2000, 127). This paper attempted to explore the political and social messages in popular music, more specifically it investigated the relationship between Soul music and civil rights movements in the United States.
Music can be used to describe how we feel on the inside when we ourselves can’t seem to find the words. Music has the power to help us discover ourselves or remember something we may have lost. I think Paulnack is right when he states that music can bring people together. Many people like the same genres and styles and feel something when they listen to it. Music can be found all over the world and can be related to everything around us. Music has been a part of our culture since the beginning of history, it’s constantly evolving giving each generation their on form of expression. Just by appreciating music as an art from we can make connections to those who are different from
Music has played a vital role in human culture and evidence based on archaeological sites can date it back to prehistoric times. It can be traced through almost all civilizations in one form or another. As time has progressed so has the music and the influences it has on people. Music is an important part of popular culture throughout the world, but it is especially popular in the United States. The music industry here is, and has been, a multi-million dollar business that continues to play an important role in American popular culture. This is also a art form and business that is forever changing as the times and more importantly, technology changes. Technology has changed the way music is made as well as how it is produced,
Music allows an artist to give those whose voice may not be loud enough to be heard. Their music can cover any issue of poverty, discrimination, segregation, people of color, oppression, and etc. The lyrics are the key part to get any point across but also any footage that accompanies gives the viewer more of an insight into these issues. Many artist/bands like Bob Dylan, Fort Minor, Joyner Lucas, Hurray for the Riff Raff, and Michael Jackson address many issues the class talked about and the point of view of those who are viewed as minorities. The music these artists and bands produce gives the listener an idea of what exactly is happening in the world and what has happened. Each song individually covers the importance that we, as humans, must change the way we think and act and listen to the problems others have and even if it does not affect us.
