Recognizing symbols in literary works is not always an easy feat especially if the symbol that the author is trying to convey is not an archetype. The story “The Birth-mark” by Nathaniel Hawthorne starts off by comparing a love for science to the love you can feel for a woman, and it is deemed Aylmer’s love for his wife could only be stronger than his love for science if the two were mixed. This foreshadowing gives the reader some idea that the rest of the story “birthmark” will be about Aylmer’s, love for his wife being affected by his love of science.

The story “The Birth-mark” by Nathaniel Hawthorne is heavily affected by symbolism. Aylmer’s wife Georgianna has a small hand shaped birth mark on her cheek that is viewed differently by many people. Women view Georgianna’s birthmark as damaging to her beauty, nicknaming her birth mark the “bloody hand”. This personification of nature as a woman is something that is prevalent through most literary works to the point I would consider it an archetype. Aylmer believes that he can use science to remove the imperfection nature has placed on his wife. I believe Aylmer’s choice to challenge nature symbolizes human kinds belief that they can overcome natures hold on their lives. As Aylmer and Georgiana sit in his lab he tells her of his lotion that when used “freckles may be washed away as easily as the hands are cleansed”. She asks if he plans to use the lotion on her birthmark and Aylmer replies” this is merely superficial.
