Alfred Hitchcock once said “There is no terror in the bang, only in the anticipation of it.” This idea proves to be true in Richard Connell’s short story, “The Most Dangerous Game,” as Rainsford is constantly in fear from the anticipation of being caught by Zaroff. At the beginning Rainsford shows that he is a great hunter and shows no fear. When he is forced to play his game he is fearful and is scared for his life. The setting relates to the story by building suspense. The first place where the setting builds suspense is when Rainsford sees the island. Rainsford sees a strange island in the distance, and questions what it is. After they didn't know which island it was they looked, “The old charts call it ship-trap island”(25). Rainsford is in danger when general Zaroff forces him to play his game. Rainsford is terrified when he learns about Zaroff's sick hunting methods and what he hunts “ It must have courage, cunning, and, above all, it must be able to reason”(35). This quote helps the reader understand what Zaroff is hunting. It also provides for a better understanding of how sick Zaroff really is.
The last way the setting builds suspense is when Rainsford is in the jungle and trying to fight off Zaroff. Rainsford is in the jungle hiding, and tricking Zaroff by giving him an impossible trail to follow. Running terrified for his life he must find a way to get ahead of Zaroff.“He caught hold of a springy young sapling and to it he fastened his hunting knife, with the blade pointing down the trail; with a bit of grapevine he tied back the sapling”(45). Zaroff is chasing him so as a result, he is running and trying to hide. Therefore Rainsford is trying to get away from Zaroff.
In conclusion, Rainsford learned a lot on the island. It challenged him mentally and physically to find ways to outsmart general Zaroff. Rainsford learned a lot on that trip to the unfamiliar island. In the end Rainsford will probably never lean over a rail
He does this rather than being killed on the spot because he refused to be hunted. Rainsford does not want to simply be killed because he disagreed on General Zaroffs opinion on the object he hunts. Finding the idea absurd, Rainsford reluctantly agrees to be hunted after learning about the terms. This does not automatically make him go insane or change him but rather introduces what he will become. Rainsford sets off running away from General Zaroff trying to remain calm. Rainsford makes his way to a tree and climbs it. A couple hours later when he reaches the top branch of the tree he hears Zaroff coming after him and has to constantly remind himself to remain idle in the tree so he won't be caught. One would see this when Rainsford is travelling through the bushes reciting to himself, "I must keep my nerve, I must keep my nerve, I must keep my nerve" (Connell 229). Rainsford thinks he has a chance at leaving the island but this confidence diminishes when he realizes that he may not make it
“Rainsford said,Hunting? Good God, General Zaroff, what you speak of is murder.’” (Connell 70). Rainsford’s personality changes throughout this story, but, the trait of bravery stays true throughout the story. Through his personality trait of bravery Rainsford moves the “Most Dangerous Game” plot forward.
As soon as Rainsford stops running to find somewhere to hide, he thinks of ways that he can lead General Zaroff onto a different trail. According to the text, “He executed a series of intricate loops; he doubled on his trail again and again, recalling all the love of the fox hunt and all the dodges of the fox.”(27). This shows that he is developing survival traits because he is making it look like he is going all different directions so that General Zaroff won’t know which way Rainsford was going which he wouldn't be able to follow. When Rainsford hears a sound he thinks that someone was coming so he finds a way to hide himself. Also according to the short story, “He flattened himself down on the limb, and through a screen of leaves almost as thick as tapestry, he watched. The thing that was approaching was a man”(28). Being able to not be seen is a important thing to do in different circumstance because if he gets seen then he will lose the
But not all murder stories are not the same; this is shown clearly in the “The Most Dangerous Game”, written by Richard Connell. The author tells a story about a well-known hunter who gets shipwrecked, but who is enjoying the island. But that all turns upside down, when he experiences the true meaning of having fear when his life is at stake. Rainsford is ultimately justified in his killing of General Zaroff because he has saved the lives of many.
In the short story, "The Most Dangerous Game", Rainsford was justified in the killing of General Zaroff. Rainsford was an animal hunter on his way to Rio, that fell off his yacht. He swam to Ship-Trap island and he met Ivan and General Zaroff. General Zaroff let Mr. Rainsford stay in his mansion and he provided food and clothing. As Rainsford got to know General Zaroff. he found out General Zaroff trap men on the island to hunt them like they are animals.
In the short story “ The Most Dangerous Game “, Rainsford was justified in killing General Zaroff. In this short story a man named Rainsford was on a ship with a couple men on a island called Ship-Trap. The ship got in a crash in the couple men died then Rainsford heard 3 gun shots so he knew that he wasn’t the only one on the island. Rainsford swims to shore they had a chateau so , he knocks on the door in that’s how he meet General Zaroff ; Shortly General Zaroff tells Rainsford about the game but Rainsford didn’t want apart of the game. Rainsford don’t hunt humans , he was a animal hunter Zaroff disagreed with Rainsford so it became ; Rainsford being the prey and General Zaroff was the predator.
Rainsford clearly has shown that he is terrified by the General. While Rainsford is hiding in a tree after the General spots him and then leaves Rainsford realizes that “the cossack was the cat, he was the mouse. Then it was that Rainsford knew the full meaning of terror” (Connell 36). Rainsford realizes that the general is the cat and he is the mouse, also that Zaroff is the hunter, and he is the hunted, and for the first time in his life, Rainsford is generally terrified. Rainsford is very scared of the general but also wants to survive, that is why he decides to have revenge, and kill the General. Before Rainsford was being hunted, General Zaroff told him about the game that he played Rainsford decides right at that moment that it is wrong, he realizes this when he declares ‘“did not make me condone cold blooded murder”, finished Rainsford stiffly”’ (Connell 30). Right from the moment the General tells Rainsford that he hunts humans for fun, Rainsford is very freaked out, he wants to leave the island. Rainsford is very opposed to the game he believes it is murder. At this point in the story I believe that he will not enjoy hunting the same way as he did before after he undergoes this experience. While Rainsford is in the jungle, he realizes that the General is a very scary person, the narrator states “Rainsfords second thought was even more
As the game progresses, he puts his wits to the test and creates many different kinds of traps to try and throw Zaroff off his game. Rainsford is brave in the making of these traps because they can either keep
Rainsford proves many traits throughout the story, but out of all of them, the one that he presents often, is that he is a very intelligent man. This trait is seen throughout the story when Rainsford is stumped with no clue as to what to do while being hunted by General Zaroff. When he finally decides to use his own knowledge, “Rainsford had dug himself in France when a second’s delay meant death” (Connell 56). From that quote we can catch on that Rainsford is a very intelligent man because while being hunted he managed to think and use his own experience to survive the hunt.
General Zaroff and Rainsford are similar in that they are both audacious. When Rainsford heard the dogs coming he didn't give up but instead he built a trap in order to trap the Generals dogs. If Rainsford wouldn't have been brave and build the trap for the dogs, he would not still be alive. Even though Rainsford is brave, the General is just as brave. When The General realized that Rainsford was a better hunter than he was, he did not get discouraged and give up but instead he kept trying. This is important because if he would have given up, he would have had no chance of winning whatsoever.
Rainsford is a skilled hunter with the ability to hunt almost anything. He is very dangerous, but Zarroff is the most fierce competition that he has ever faced. After rainsford tries tries to lose Zarroff by backtracking his
This actions shows that he isn't afraid of the General even though he was a murderer. Since he had this confidence, he won the fight without being found or even hunted. This scene is significant because just when he swam up to Zaroff, Rainsford knew he won and that the general had not found him and gave up so Rainsford was brave enough to swim to show the general he had won. The author crafts when the general how surprised he was to see Rainsford swim to him and that he had not of found him, during the dangerous game. The story states, “Rainsford” screamed the general. “How did you get
Although he has learned many helpful tricks from is his years in the war he would still be able to survive without those experiences. Rainsford is naturally intelligent and is able to reason. When he used the tricks on Zaroff, they did not stop him, they only encouraged Zaroff to challenge Rainsford more. In the end, fear ultimately saved Rainsford’s life. His fear caused him to jump off the cliff, not reason. However after Rainsford jumped off the cliff, he used reason to analyze his situation and he swam back to the house. Rainsford used both fear and reason to survive.
The way Rainsford ended up on the island was, in fact, the largest plot change. He was originally supposed to fall off of the ship due to his sense of curiosity. Instead, Rainsford’s ship wrecked and left him as the only survivor. The director probably decided to make this adjustment in order to emphasize the fact that Zaroff typically shot down passing ships, as it was not directly stated in the film. Another difference was the amount characters.
Rainsford is a hunter of big-game. He was on his way to the Amazon when he falls from his yacht, and has to swim to the rocky shore of “Ship-Trap” Island. With his vast knowledge of the wilderness Rainsford was able to find a large house. The owner of that house also shares the same love of hunting as Rainsford does. His name is General Zaroff. He comes across as a good host to the lost Rainsford, but soon shows his true creepy, and a murderous personality. General Zaroff gave Rainsford a choice like he does everyone else that ends up on his Island
