how does today’s society obtain education? Well there are various different concepts to answer this one question. For example, in The Allegory of the Cave, Plato defines the quest for knowledge and understanding as a turning process—breaking free from chains that bind us and turning towards new ideas. I see education as being an enlightening experience in one’s life and I believe that it plays a critical part in our lives. Education can help us live more complete and meaningful lives by nurturing essential values and skills. Education doesn’t solely come from the books and school teachers, but more essentially you gain knowledge just by living. I personally consider education to be the set of knowledge and skills required to survive in …show more content…
They’re no true definitions to actually fully define an educated person. The range of the definition can differ from person to person depending on their views.
There are numerous components to being a good learner and also a good thinker. The following are just some of the assets of a good learner. However, it must be noted that what may be a good quality for one individual may not be as effective for another. Good learners most of the time have a drive for a higher and greater understanding of things. One of the key components of a good learner is that they will realize that in many instances, learning is not always a spontaneous event, but something that is realized over a period of time. Good learners also tend to make knowledge their own. It’s not always enough to just take in new knowledge. It has to make sense, to connect in meaningful ways with what the learner already knows. They are excellent listeners for the most part. Good learners also share what they’ve learned and like to build upon it.
Personally I really don’t place borders on who’s a good learners verses who’s a bad learner. I feel like everyone has their own way of learning and obtaining things so we can’t strictly define what or how someone should acquire knowledge. We all have different learning styles and patterns. I think that
Knowledgeable, educated, and wise have become descriptive characteristics that have become seemingly interchangeable in today’s society. However, what does it mean to be educated, wise or knowledgeable? In the article “The Educated Student: Global Citizen or Global Consumer” by Benjamin Barber, he says “…young people were exposed more and more to tutors other than teachers in their classrooms or even those who were in their churches, their synagogues-and today their mosques as well.” (417). It is suggested that the places where these characteristics are obtained have changed with industrialization and capitalism. “The Student and the University (from the Closing of the American Mind)” by Allen Bloom directly postulates from the vantage
In Conclusion, learning is something that you can grow from figuring out what strategies work for you whether is be from writing it down to seeing in the form picture and model. Learning is something where you do what is best for you and your difficulties and what can help you overcome your difficulties in any class that you have and once you find what works for you, you will be able to do your best and achieve what you
Education is equivalent to knowledge. A person can’t have or elaborate opinions on a topic if that person does not have enough data about that matter or does not manage well that topic. The capacity to pay attention and take notes carefully is the most effective way to absorb facts on a subject. An active learner must consistently listen, read and think carefully, extract the idea, deliberate it, and exercise. Active learning should motivate to create more questions about the topic you’re learning, by creating questions one can better comprehend and solidify the learning process.
Education not synonymous with schooling because a person who is educated does the polar opposite of what the school system and our society desires. An educated individual “think[s] critically and independently” instead of reflexively obeying, failing to question authority, and refusing to ‘think outside of the box,’ as the old saying goes (Gatto). This person is not “conditioned to dread being alone, and seek constant companionship through the TV, the computer, the cell phone, and through shallow friendships…” Instead, they possess the ability to find solace in being by themselves in addition to “develop[ing] and inner life so that they will never be bored,” (Gatto). Lastly, Gatto asserts that education is studying “the grown up material, in history, literature, philosophy, music, art, economics, [and] theology,” which are the subjects he claims that instructors are conditioned to
What does it mean to be an educated person? An educated person is a well-rounded person that is knowledgeable in not just one area. It is a person that is open to new ideas and able to interact with various people. Someone that is educated is able to learned about our background and history and passes it down for future generations to learned and obtained that knowledge. Culture is the most important part of ones education. Many of the customs, attitudes, and beliefs of one group is what let one person be able to acquire the knowledge others countries, educators, and society is trying to teach them.

What is education? According to Webster’s Dictionary education is defined as, (noun) 1: the action or process of being educating or of being educated, 2: the field of study that deals mainly with methods of teaching and learning in schools. What does education provide for us? How important is education in today’s society?
Richard Rodriguez writes in his essay, “The Lonely, Good Company of Books,” how he once struggled with the concept of being “educated” while studying in school (191). It is true that society has developed the idea that to be educated means to be successful in life, but is this really true? Education is certainly a contributing factor to one’s future, however, what exactly does it mean to be “educated” in today’s world? Although the times have changed and the world has become more modernized, learning has remained as important, if not more so, as it had when it was first discovered that it was essential to function in an advanced society. Being educated means that they know the basic knowledge, are able to apply those skills to different situations, and use them to comprehend and give back to the community.
Someone who is a lifelong Learner takes responsibility for their actions and also develop and maintain physical health and emotional stability. They objectively evaluate problems and seek moral and ethical solutions. To me someone who is a lifelong learner is able to maintain everything under control and being able to develop characteristic that will help them take responsibly for your actions. It also important to have great problem solving skills for them, so when there is a problem you can solve it right away.
A lot of people think education is just something you get in school, but in reality education comes from different places and people not just school and teachers. For example, way before I started school I was already being educated by my parents, they taught me how to eat, behave, use the bathroom, talk, and a lot of other things that help out in life.
I personally like to take what's being taught to me in class, and turn into my own wording so that I can understand it better. I'm teaching myself in a different way, but I'm still meeting those expectations of knowing exactly what I need to know when it comes to school work and exams. I also like to set up study groups with some friends so that we can all teach and learn from each
In general there are two types of learners with different traits completely different viewpoints on learning. There are individuals with a growth mindset and individuals with a fixed mindset. A person who contains a fixed mindset believes that they have limitations in learning and completely unacknowledged their weaknesses. While the growth learners believe their learning ability is unlimited and they can improve their weak areas. Personally, I learn more towards the growth mindset side and there are certain things I have a fixed mindset on.
But an educated person (aka “a smart person”) also is compassionate, empathetic, generous, caring, helpful, resourceful, honest, spiritual (however defined) and hard-working, Like I said, it’s not all about levels of structures academia (aka college degree). Thinking twice about the question, I guess I define “educated person” as being curious and being willing to learn new things every day, all the time. The more the better, the deeper the knowledge, and the wider the range of subjects, “the wisdom of years” as they say. (Jeff Syme,
The term ‘education’ can mean many things. An education is the collective knowledge a person has, but what does an education mean? Although an education can be paid for, no one can physically give you an education, so it is not a gift. There are societal situations where an education is a necessity, but not many globally. Education is a tool to be utilized differently in every part of the world. Knowledge is power, but some knowledge is more powerful depending on your region. If you are part a primitive tribe in New Guinea, a person that is considered to be educated may be illiterate. Whereas in America, an illiterate person would have trouble functioning at all in society. Education is a tool that is to be
Education has been around for centuries. Since the beginning of time. All the way back to the time of Noah from the Bible. There have been many different styles, teaching and tactics of education. From learning the basics in the beginning of time like speaking languages, writing and the word of God, to what teachers are teaching today in normal schools like science, history, math, english, the list goes on. Throughout history people have been educated in very many numerous ways like being self taught, having a tutor, learning from family members, online school, home school, and also just plain old sitting in a classroom and being taught by a teacher with many students around one another. As time has gone by
