The term “Big Business” immediately draws a negative connotation for many people. Furthermore, it appears that over the past decades globalized businesses have been found guilty of corruption, tax evasion, child labor, and harsh working conditions. The BGS’s interactions with Wal-Mart have helped the conglomerate become the largest retailer in the world (Bethel University, 2017). Moreover, now it is one of the leading, cutting edge, and most prosperous businesses in American history. Wal-Mart is a “Big Business” and they have held this title for many years. That is not to say they present a negative connotation to most Americans. Quite the contrary, Wal-Mart is a global leader in offering low cost merchandise, a variety of items to choose from, a clean environment in which to shop. Additionally, they are one the largest employers in America, they are still a private corporation, whom stocks rank first and second place. They promote within and they offer training and advancement for their associates (Fishman, 2006).

There are numerous areas that stand out as significant positive effects. When Wal-Mart decided to eliminate the cardboard box around deodorant, they may not have realized the positive impact that would have around the world. The manufacturers saved money by eliminating the boxes, the shipping costs were lowered, and the profits were a win-win for everyone. They do not offer good working conditions for their employees or enough medical benefits to support themselves and their families. Sebastian Mallaby says that Wal-Mart is not wrong for the way that they run their business; he feels as though Wal-Mart does their consumers a favor by keeping the wages low and offering “low prices” (620). Another big issue affecting the welfare of the human population, which is crucial in the development of a stable society and ecosystem, are the work labor issues involved in Chinese factories. Taking a closer look at the issues will hopefully develop an idea of how hurtful Walmart truly is to the environment. The case also shows statistics of how much percentage Walmart is of many suppliers’ sales. According to the case Walmart has a 30% market share of all household items. Twenty-eight percent of Dial’s business and twenty-four percent of Del Monte’s business go through Walmart stores. No matter, I am at home or on campus, even when I was traveling in other states in America, there is always a Wal-Mart market nearby my location. Due to the super big market power Wal-Mart has, and people’s negative impression of large enterprises, there is always a debate about whether Wal-Mart is good for America or not. Whether it's a brand new 59” LCD widescreen television or merely a pack of gum, each purchase you make from a Walmart store inadvertently results in a higher price paid; both within your community as well as the greater world around you. Relying entirely upon you-the ever consuming scavenger – to fuel the bustling utopia of the manufacturing industry, exists Walmart. More importantly, Walmart relies upon the oblivion towards matters outside of our own lives that we as society generally project. Even today Wal-Mart believes in doing everything they can to minimize their costs in order to provide a cheaper and more affordable shopping experience to their customers. Currently Wal-Mart has approximately 2.2 million full time employees, and revenue of about 4.8 billion and operates over 11,000 stores in 27 countries around the world. Wal-Mart has always been very focused on their employees, shareholders and their community. They have promoted about 170,000 people to jobs with more responsibility and higher pay to show how much they value their employee’s work. By keeping unnecessary spending down within the corporate level Wal-Mart is able to give so much back to its well-deserved employees, shareholders and communities. Wherever Wal-Mart can save money they make sure that they do. Even after doing all of this they still make sure they follow Sam Walton’s concept of offering “a wide assortment of good quality merchandise; the lowest possible prices; guaranteed satisfaction with what you buy; friendly, knowledgeable service; convenient hours; free parking; and a pleasant shopping experience.”
