The Boy in Striped Pajamas had numerous characters that were dynamic and changed throughout the novel. But the one that changed the most in the novel was Bruno he started out as an innocent nine year old German boy, and ended as a traumatized young boy.
At the beginning of the book “The Boy in Striped Pajamas” Bruno is faced with hardship as his father is assigned a new job at a new place forcing him and his family to move, with that making him leave his three friends; Karl, Daniel, and Martin (Page 7 “Say goodbye to Karl and Daniel and Martin?” he continued his voice coming dangerously close to shouting, which was not allowed indoors. “But they’re my three best friends for life!”) This change dramatically changed Bruno’s attitude making

“Hello,” said Bruno “Hello,” said the Boy.)At this point of the book Bruno had crossed the line with his exploration, he had went much further his father and mother would ever approve, he comes face to face with an Auschwitz prisoner although he doesn’t know it yet as Bruno thinks it’s a good place to be in. This is the one point in the book that there’s a relief for Bruno, he finally has someone to talk to for once rather him sitting all alone contemplating everything he has in his mind and bugging his father, he finally has someone to express his emotions to. This decision changed Bruno as he would after wards continue a conversation with the boy and they would both share each other’s stories. If it wasn’t enough Bruno was now bringing food to the boy that is “Shmuel” without anyone’s permission. But this wouldn’t be the last change Bruno goes through as now Bruno will cross all lines and take the most drastic measure in the
Aristotle wrote the ideal qualities in order to form the “perfect tragedy.” Many people argue today that Aristotle’s criteria for a perfect tragedy cannot be met, due to the fact that it is contradictory. The Boy in the Striped Pajamas was released in 2008 and I believe it meets Aristotle’s qualifications for a perfect tragedy, except for one part. In this movie, the Anagorisis does not prevent the praxis from happening.
“How do I look?” Bruno asked as he was putting his pajamas on. Shmuel responded with a nod indicating that they look alike. The Boy in the Striped Pajamas portrays a family during the German war and all the struggles they had faced. Bruno, who is the son of this family, wanted nothing but to go on an adventure. He even went against his mother’s strict orders not to leave and found himself outside a concentration camp. Children tend to have their own views on the world which results in them not seeing how harsh the world truly is especially when it comes to the aspect of race. In The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, the power of rhetoric is shown in the culture between the German’s and the Jew’s lives and the
In the book it says, “‘You know how important fathers job is don't you?’ ‘Of course,’ said Bruno nodding his head, he knew this because there were always so many visitors to the house, men in fantastic uniforms... and they were always polite to Father and said that the Fury had big things in mind for him” (Boyne 4). Bruno knew that fathers job was very important and always called father the “good soldier”. He noticed how fancy fathers uniforms were and knew that since they had moved to Auschwitz because of father's job, that he had a great value in his line of work. If Bruno did know what fathers job was, he would be very furious with him. He’d not only be upset over the fact that he caused them to move for a terrible job, but he’d also be mad that father had some kind of connection to bringing Shmuel to Auschwitz and causing his papa to go
The mood throughout the story is very often negatively influenced by the setting of a concentration camp. The house in which Bruno and his family live at Auschwitz is small and lonely. “The new house, however, stood all on its own in an empty, desolate place and there were no other houses anywhere to be seen, which meant there would be no other families around and no other boys to play
First, On page 202 it says “ You still want to help me find Papa?’ asked Shmuel and Bruno nodded quickly” This shows that bruno is helpful and kind because he wants to help shmuel find his dad. This builds suspense because bruno is NOT ALLOWED to go on the other side of the fence with the jews. Secondly, On page 190 Bruno says “ I’d prefer all four of us to stay together” (When Bruno’s dad asked them if they wanted to move back to Berlin Bruno said he would go where the family went and wanted to stay together.) This is a revealing action about bruno because it shows how he is a caring person and wants to stay with his family. It builds suspense because his dad needs to stay because he is a soldier working. Lastly, On page 208 the author states “ When the soldier walked into the cabin Bruno said “ I don't think I like it here.” This reveals that Bruno does not like the life that shmuel lives and wants to go home. It builds suspense because the soldiers are bringing him somewhere and Bruno doesn't want to be there. To conclude, the author writes about actions that reveal Bruno’s caring
During the movie, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, many scenes displayed Bruno’s helplessness and inability to help neither the Jews, nor himself in the end. For instance, Lieutenant Kurt revealed to Bruno’s mother about the concentration camps without the knowledge of Bruno’s father. This enraged him so he sought for his revenge by putting Lieutenant Kurt on the spot with the topic of his father, who was said to have left the country in opposition to the German ways. Lieutenant Kurt then released all his anger and frustration on Pavel, a kind Jew who tended to Bruno’s injury after falling off his swing in the beginning of the movie, right in front of Bruno’s eyes. Later, the clueless Bruno found out that he was beaten to death when his sister said that Pavel will never be coming back. Then, there was another scene where Shmuel, Bruno’s new Jewish friend who was also eight years old, was temporarily called out from the concentration camp because they Germans needed a pair of small hands to dry and polish all the glassware at Bruno’s house. Knowing how Shmuel is always hungry, Bruno gave him a few cookies. Right after, Lieutenant Kurt came into the room and found Shmuel eating so he automatically assumed that he stole
Bruno likes going to meet Shmuel as much as he can and also loves bringing him food, talking and asking questions about his unfortunate situation and his seclusion behind a fence. Although Bruno does often say some silly and selfish things, Shmuel manages to contain himself out of respect. One example is when Bruno asks him why he wears pyjamas all day and Shmuel replies that are the soldiers that they took all their clothes away. Bruno then says: “My dad's a soldier, but not the sort that takes people's clothes away.” This sort of dialogue shows how naïve, ignorant and unaware were the young people like Bruno about the political situation of their time and about the segregation of Jewish people and their extermination and
Bruno learns lots of important things when he first move to Out-With, a very big one was Change. Change is to become or make different, in this case change is about Bruno and his family altering their life and moving to a smaller house and fixing their customs with the circumstances they were under. In the book change does some good and bad to the family, change helped Gretel and Bruno with their relationship, it also gave Bruno a new friend called Shmuel. It’s bad because Bruno learns the hard truth of concentration camps, his mother kind of grew depressed and would drink medicinal sherries. “It’s that we have to make the best out of a bad situation.’” (Boyne, 14) This is what mother told Bruno after arriving at Out-With. She explained to
He tells Bruno on one of their visits that he does not know where his father is and asks Bruno to help. He wants to help when he finds out that his dad is missing, and he also visits Shmuel almost every single day. They are doing everything they can to try and help one another even if it means breaking the rules. The book says, “Despite the chaos that followed,” meaning being put in the gas chambers, “Bruno found that he was still holding Shmuel’s hand in his own and nothing in the world would have persuaded him to let go.” This proves the real friendship between Shmuel and
Throughout the novel, Bruno misinterprets what is going on in the world and this family. One of the
He does not realize that his father has a lot of power over what happens in this camp. Bruno doesn't understand why his father says that the people on the other side of the fence are not really people at all and why they all wear the same pyjamas. This demonstrates the purity of Bruno, who is oblivious to what his father does and shows a major theme in the movie of the innocence of childhood, but is also linked to the idea of how power demonstrates human nature. His father fully supports the persecution of the Jews. To him it is a normal part of life, yet prefers to change the subject rather than offering his son an explanation.
At the beginning of the book Bruno is hates his new home and wishes he could be back in Germany with his friends. He is very selfish and disobeys his father's orders often. By the end of the novel Bruno is bringing Shmuel food and notices that he is not in good health. He is also starting to see his mothers misery. I believe that the more Bruno met with Samuel he became more aware of what was going to happen to him. I also think that as Bruno got older he became more knowledgeable and had a better understanding of what was going on at that time in Germany and other European countries.
A major change for Bruno was when they moved from Berlin to Auschwitz. Bruno was outgoing, adventurous and had many friends. After they moved, he became lonely, sad and a little resentful to his parents. He and Gretel were home schooled and he wasn’t allow to go outside anymore. He had no idea of what was going on in the concentration camp or his surrounding and didn’t understand why he couldn’t play with the kids he saw in the camp. After he met Shmuel things started to feel a little more normal for him but unaware that his life will end very soon.
Bruno, initially, has ignorance about everything going on in his life. For example, his dissatisfaction with leaving Berlin is demonstrated in many parts of the story. He is shown to the reader as being innocent, immature, and unable to give things a chance. On many occasions, Bruno complains about moving to “Out-With” (Auschwitz). He continually complains before even giving himself a chance to experience it. He was whining and being stubborn. To illustrate, in the novel, the author says, “Nothing, thought Bruno, not even the insects, would ever choose to stay at Out-With.
In the begining of the movie, “The boy in the striped pajamas” bruno comes home from playing with his friends and sees everyone is moving things to a truck. This is when brunos mother tells him his father has been given a promotion to run Auschwitzt. Bruno is upset because he had to move to a different home and leave his friends behind due to his fathers work. When they arrive to the new home, their father has to go into a meeting. His wife is left clueless, she has no clue what they are actually doing. Bruno is not happy at all, the only one excited seems to be his sister, Gretel. While maria (maid) is unpacking brunos clothes in his room, bruno jumps ontop of a chair and looks outside his window to see a “farm”. He goes on a tells him mother that if he can go play with the children on the farm and his mother still clueless says “yes, of course I dont see why not” until a man (Jew) comes in and thats when bruno explained to his mother that thats who he was seeing the people in the pajamas. Bruno is then shown talking to his father in his office. Bruno asks his father why do the people on the farm wear pajamas and his father tries to explain to him that “they arent people”, when his mom storms in looking furious and telling him that he cant play with the children from the farm. Fast foward two weeks, bruno is still bored out of his mind but is trying to make his situation fun. He wants to explore the “back garden” but isnt allowed to. One day he decides to go exploring in
