How Horror Writers Create Suspense

Suspense could be found in all forms of visual entertainment and regular entertainment. Some examples include video games, movies, television shows and even books. Suspense is the feeling of excited or anxious for an uncertain event that is going to take place in the future. Suspense is usually made to build up for the climax or resolution in a story. Authors across all platforms use suspense. Authors such as William Shakespeare, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Stephen Crane and Yusef Komunyakaa. Besides all this great authors W.F. Harvey also created suspense for the short story “August Heat”. The author W.F. He states “Horror stories are designed to make our pulses race and our skin tingle. They often revolve around mayhem and the stuff of nightmares—death, evil, the demonic, and the like. A great horror story reflects people’s deepest fears.” This shows us that its use to create a scenery with more negative pulses. He states that he and other horror writers uses suspense to foreshadow upcoming events that could drastically affect the outcome of the situations. Another point he states is, “Writers may create suspense by withholding information from the reader—for instance, how a crime was committed or who committed it. One way to withhold information is to include a narrator who is not trustworthy: He or she may or may not be trying to manipulate the reader.” With the information he gives us we could tell that authors use suspense to control the thoughts of the reader. Even though he was criticized for not having enough knowledge to create his plays, he created a huge suspense in his writing. In the article “William Shakespeare The Poet and His Craft” by Madeline Dawson, talks about how Shakespeare is known for his unique sonnet form. A sonnet is a poem of fourteen lines using any of a number of formal rhyme schemes, in English typically having ten syllables per line.
