Fishing first began as a necessary skill to survive. There were no supermarkets to buy food at any time desired. People needed to catch their own food, and an easy way of doing so was by catching fish in water. But as society has evolved and the need to catch food is all but gone, fishing is still as popular as ever. This leaves the question- is there a purpose in today’s society for recreational fishing? Today’s society is very inactive. People spend hours everyday watching tv, or using their phones and computers. Not only is society very inactive, but it is also very stressful. A fishing trip includes walking from spot to spot, rowing (if in a boat), and also reeling in fish. With all of these activities possible, the amount of exercise fishing can give is astronomical. Fishing is a low impact sport that is not hard on the human body which makes it great for someone who does not want to go to the gym. Lifting weights at the gym may be fine for some people, but others have lack of motivation to put that amount of pressure on their bodies. Fishing is a surprisingly effective calorie burning alternative for those not willing to go to the gym daily. Fishing is truly a full body workout that does not demand a lot on the body to get the full effects. Dexterity and reflexes become improved while fishing because of activities like tying hooks on fishing line.The upper body will be used to reel in fish and the lower body is used for moving around which can help improve the cardiovascular system. Fishing causes so much movement that it can burn more than 200 calories per hour according to calorielab.com. That same website also showed that if someone did various things during their fishing trip such as dig up worms, or paddle, the calories burned in a day could reach almost 1,000.

Fishing does not discriminate, and can bring any group of people together. With there being so much controversy and anger over racism and gender equality, it is necessary to find things for all types of people to bond. It does not seem too important to make sure that diversity exists but there are several benefits. One thing Diversity does is it enhances creativity. It generates the search for new information and perspectives, leading to better decision making and problem solving. “Even simply being exposed to diversity can change the way you think.” (Katherine Phillips) People from different backgrounds have experienced things others have not and can help give a better perspective on certain issues. It is important to be open minded and be aware of what others are going through and the best way to do so is to talk to people that are different from the usual people one spends time with. Sometimes it is hard to be comfortable with an unfamiliar group so there needs to be a way to find common ground. Fishing allows people to be accepted by a community if they are struggling to find a place. Fishing does not see religion, gender, or race and helps unite different cultures by giving them a common interest. When fishing, there are also no social classes. It does not matter if a fisherman is a lawyer or a custodian because societal ranks do not make someone good at fishing. That makes it
