It deeply saddens me to say we are all gathered here today to remember the life of James Gatz, or better known as Jay Gatsby. When I first moved here to West Egg a few years ago I quickly took notice of Jay and was determined to find out more about him. To my own surprise, Gatsby grew on me and as time progressed our friendship prospered. You see, Gatsby was different from the people of West Egg, he was better and he deserved better than what he got. He also threw the most outstanding parties in history. {chuckles lightly} Day by day, my respect for this extraordinary man grew and grew stronger. Jay had something special about him that many failed to notice and embrace.

Jay Gatsby, the title character of the novel is an incredibly wealthy young man, living in a medieval mansion in West Egg on an imaginary area of Long Island. Gatsby has many laudable traits. For example, he is filled with optimism and the ability to transform his dreams into reality. Jay is also extremely faithful to his true love, Daisy Buchanan, even to the point of death. When we first meet Gatsby, he is the aloof host of the fantastically opulent parties thrown every weekend at his mansion. It appears he is surrounded by wondrous luxury and is courted by beautiful women and the rich and powerful men of the time. Jay is also a very admirable character due to his status of wealth and being a hero of War World I, “In the Argonne Forest I took two machine gun detachments so far forward that there was half a mile gap on either side… I was promoted to be a major, and every Allied government gave me a decoration- even Montenegro”. However, Nick who narrates the book views Gatsby as a flawed man who is dishonest, deceitful, a liar, and a dreamer whom is searching for answers in the past, “he talked a lot about the past, and I gathered that he wanted to recover something, some idea of himself, perhaps, that had gone into loving Daisy… if he could once return to a certain starting place and go over it all slowly, he could find out what that thing was…”

Almost every story has an antagonist because without one, the protagonist would achieve their goals without facing any obstacles, guaranteeing an uninteresting book. Writers add these types of characters in order to add conflict and keep the readers captivated. In the American novel The Great Gatsby, the author, F. Scott Fitzgerald, introduced us to various contentious characters, all of who contributed to the drama in the story. One of these characters is Daisy Buchanan, a wealthy young woman, who appears to be sweet, kind, and caring. However, this is just the first impression that the reader gets; as the story progresses, we come to realize that she is the most despicable character, as she is selfish, shallow, and manipulative.

As Daisy simply advanced in her life, little did she know that James Gatz would leap into social heights and become Jay Gatsby so soon. James Gatz was a young poor boy, who thought he was never good enough for Daisy. Gatsby has spent the past few years prospering wealth, building a mansion; minutes away from Daisy, just to compensate for what he didn't have before.He devotes his entire life into moulding himself to be the man that Daisy desires and “Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before [him].” After becoming the Great Gatsby, he hopes that eventually one day Daisy will find her way back to him. Gatsby’s love for Daisy has grown even fonder and after finally meeting her she doesn't satisfy his standards anymore, “There must have been moments even that afternoon when Daisy tumbled short of his dreams-not through her

This valiant quote by a former president of France accentuates my opinion of the Great Jay Gatsby. From humble beginnings rises our main focus of F. Scott Fitzgeralds’ The Great Gatsby. Young Jimmy Gatz is brought to West Egg from his heavily impoverished North Dakota family. His desire to be something greater than a farmer drove him to fortune and love through any means necessary; his life long obsession, Daisy Fay, infatuates Jay in his own insatiable thirst for her affection. James follows Daisy in the years after he is deployed to World War 1, and when he sees she has married Tom Buchanan he becomes hell-bent on replicating the success Tom has inherited in order to win over Daisy. Through moderately deceitful ways, Jay Gatsby builds his wealth and reputation to rival and even supersede many already lavish family names. Astonishingly, the great Mr. Gatsby, overrun with newfound affluence, stays true to his friends, lover, and his own ideals to his blissfully ignorant end.

I think Gatsby is a very great person because of the fact that he did a lot of things for other people, for example he did Nick's grass and decorated his house to make it look nice, even though ultimately it was for him to see Daisy and he wanted it to be nice it was still a nice gesture. No one asked him to throw all those amazing parties and make everyone happy. All though all the things he did were selfish and for his own good he was still a great person.

In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald presents Jay Gatsby as an immoral man who acquires his wealth through corruption. He associates Gatsby with felonious characters such as Meyer Wolfsheim, who fixed the 1919 World Series. However, readers still receive Gatsby favorably. Although Gatsby acts dishonestly, he captures the reader’s sympathy because of his ambitious, romantic, and genuine personality.

Jordan, who was a dear friend of Daisy and Nick’s, was talking to Nick about Gatsby lifelong dream she proclaimed, “Gatsby bought that house so that Daisy would be just across the bay” (78). He and Daisy fall in love only in time for the war to begin. Daisy was waiting for Gatsby, even though, her family did not approve of her falling in love with a poor nobody. Gatsby is hoping that Daisy is waiting for him, but when the war is over he is sent to Oxford, and Daisy falls in love with a man that has money. The rest of the James Gatz’s life was spent attempting to get Daisy back. In Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, James Gatz is truly great, by staying true to his one and only love, staying true to his friends, and also by following his dreams and never giving up.

He changed it in an effort to leave behind his old life as a poor boy and create an entirely new identity. He is also a liar and a criminal, having accumulated his wealth and position by dishonest means. But he is still called ‘great,’ and in a sense he is. The transformation between James Gatz and Jay Gatsby is an example of how people can transform themselves according to their ambition for wealth and prosperity. The use of illegal activities to gain Gatsby's wealth is alluded to in the book, this shows the extent of how the American Dream circumvented the moral revulsion and pushed people who were crazy about money into crime - driving the moral standing of wealthier citizens into the ground. To Gatsby, his dream was symbolised by Daisy, Gatsby even says that her voice sounds like money, a direct correlation between Daisy and the wealth and happiness that Gatsby would supposedly enjoy if only he could have married Daisy but could still enjoy if he had married her five years later. His pursuit of happiness with Daisy was the ultimate cause of the degradation of Gatsby's morals and realistic dreams. This is because he held an unrealistic view of life and how he could recreate the past. Jay Gatsby is not a lazy person, he cannot stop working until his dreams have been realized, he knows that he is destined for greatness, and to not seek out greatness would be a waste, as Nick says,“So he made the most of his time, he took what he could get, ravenously and unscrupulously”(Fitzgerald 149). Gatsby’s drive is everything to him since before he met Daisy, he has strived to become more than just some kid from nowhere. As a self-made millionaire, he can only afford to rely on himself and himself alone, as there may be no one else in this world who may believe in him. In life, humans are blessed with many things, arms, legs, a heart, one’s very soul, is a blessing. Although the one thing that holds weight over all else, the one thing that can never be taken away, is one’s mind. Knowledge is power, especially as one climbs higher into the social rankings of society.
