In the story the Odyssey Odysseus travels from island to island to try to get back home to see his family . While on his journey, a group of people known as the wooers had brought themselves into his lifestyle and felt the need to vandalize his old lifestyle. Once Odysseus returned to Ithaca he soon realize the wooers had taken over his house and possessions. I believe justice was served because they wanted to take his wife, his food, and his home. My first reason why I believe justice was served was because the wooers were trying to steal his wife Penelope. While Odysseus was on his Odyssey, the wooers took advantage of him being gone to try and take everything that he had. Even though they tried really hard, his wife Penelope never cheated on him. Penelope stayed true to her marriage even though she missed her husband so much. Along with attempting to take his wife, they also ate Odysseus out of house and home. Secondly, while Odysseus was away on his travels, the wooers ate all of his food. They believed that it would be alright if they ate all of his food because he probably would not come back alive. The wooers probably thoug ht that it would be okay to just eat all of his food like the word would not travel around. That he would never have found out about it. Along with eating his food, …show more content…
Apparently they did not realize that he could come home at any point in time, and that they would eventually be caught and have to deal with the consequences. They stayed in his home trying to shoot through the ax heads to see which one of them would become the new Odysseus. They were basically trying to ruin his old life so that if he came back they would have taken all of his possessions, his life. As you can see, the wooers were a not so smart group of men who after acting all big and bad, had dealt with the consequence of
In the closing passages of the Odyssey, the suitors and disloyal servants are punished for their crimes against Odysseus, and it does indeed seem that the death penalty doled out by Odysseus is harsh. However, at this particular period of Greek history, it was expected that each man take his own vengeance against his trespassers as there was no judicial system in place to deal with these problems at the time, therefore it seems justified that as their crimes stretched over a period of nearly 20 years and were directly against xenia, the law of Zeus, that Odysseus take his revenge as he wishes.
They meet this giant and talk with him later in the night then he doesn't get a guest gift instead the cyclopes eat several of his men mad about them walking into his cave uninvited. Odysseus and his men come up with a plan to get back at him for eating some of his men and decide to poke his eye out while he is sleeping. Deciding to poke his eye out the giant cyclopes gets mad and Odysseus and his men trick him getting him to remove the giant stone out of they way so they can leave the island. If they wouldn't have done any of that there would have been no pride and Odysseus wouldn't have lost several of his men. One of the consequences we see during this section of the book is that Odysseus loses some of his men only because his pride gets to him and makes him want a stupid guest gift, but then he also believes that he should and needs to feel welcome and at least have some hospitality. “ We’re at you knees in hopes of a warm welcome, even a guest- gift, the sort that give strangers. That’s the
Odysseus was a man of respect and honor. When the wooers thought him dead they attempted to make what was Odysseus' their own. They wanted his home, his servants, and his wife. Even thought they though him dead they dishonored his memory by raping his woman servants, plotting the death of his son and attempting to lure his wife in marriage. They attempted to get everything that he owned by any means necessary.
In the story, “The Odyssey,” it is about a man known as Odysseus, he was away from home for 20 years. He was away from home for that long due to being in war, being kidnapped, all of his men and his ships being destroyed. When he does return to Ithaca he finds out that his house is full of men trying to take his wife away from him. After he heard about this he plotted to get them and knowing all this his actions were justified. They were justified because, the wooers are trying to take his wife, they threatened to kill his son, Telemachus, and when he was dressed as a beggar they were rude and unpleasant towards him.
“ Odysseus, raider of city” (9.560). The only way Odysseus was allowed to raid the cities was to win at troy then him and the crew went around raiding cities which they regret later in the book but they won in tory and were trying to get some loot before they went home, But later in the book It goes back and bites them in the butt. The gods even said that who all escaped would not be snached by the sea so they had a safe ride home because they won in troy. “all whod escape the war-the sea snached none of them” (3.216). Odysseus crew won in troy and had safe travels so they thought but later they should have never raided the cities. As you can see Throughout these examples he got his men a win at troy so they can go home but they decided to go and raid
Because they plotted against their king, everyone deserved this punishment. No one was innocent, as everyone wanted to have some piece of Odysseus's wealth and power. All of the wooers plotted against Odysseus and anyone with them would have been a threat if not punished. Telemachus would be in even more danger.
The Odyssey: Odysseus’s Justification Hammurabi’s code states, “An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.” An ancient system of justice basically saying you get what you deserve. Everyone knows the classic revenge story; the protagonist is disrespected or hurt by the antagonist, and will eventually exact their revenge. In Homer’s The Odyssey, revenge is precisely what Odysseus carries out.
Everybody that was punished did deserve to get punished. The wooers were going to marry Odysseus’ wife before he was dead. They were going to kill his son. Then, they were going to take over
Odysseus was justified in his actions by severely punishing the wooers. Odysseus had all right to be upset and seek revenge over the wooers. The wooers knew what would happen to them if Odysseus had returned to his kingdom and heard of their wrongdoings but they still continued. Also for them to attack him in his own home as he issued a warning by killing one wooer is not right and is deemed punishable. Even when a wooer tried to apologize and reason with Odysseus the wooer knew he still did him wrong therefore deserved to be punished.
When Odysseus returns home and hears about everything the suitors have done to dishonor his family, he is understandably upset. In his eyes, there is only one way to avenge these wrongdoings: to kill all those involved in the crimes. When this poem was written, a person’s reputation was incredibly important, even more so than it is today. For these men to disgrace his family and his name like they did was a big deal. Although one of the men, Eurymakhos, begged for mercy and said they would pay for what they had done with money, food, and livestock, the only price Odysseus
When Odysseus got they're he knew not to talk or show himself as himself because he knew he would get obliterated. This is why when he killed off all the wooers it was a good idea. This is because, what if the wooers came back and came for him and tried to kill him he would have regretted sparing them as his life was ending. This is one reason why they should not have
So, even though the deception is The Odyssey is unfortunate it is deemed necessary as if it is something that one must to do take back their life but still shouldn’t seek enjoyment through it. Also, the reader can tell that a revenge twist will take part much earlier from Odysseus than they can in Hamlet, the action taken in The Odyssey can be seen as an act of heroism. Odysseus revenge is justified to an extent because his actions brought harm only to the ones that brought pain and suffering to him and his family. Simply put, the suitors and his maids betray Odysseus and leave no other option than to take back what is his by force. One reason had to use force is because his son Telemachus tried to assume the position as king and take over his father’s throne and make the suitors leave but not a single suitor took Telemachus seriously.
The geography of the voyage and the demands it requested forced Odysseus to conform and make-do with what he
I feel that Odysseus was completely justified in his actions in every way possible. All the wooers and everyone else that was involved in their plans that were punished deserved the consequences. It was not a severe punishment it was needed for the people like them. The wooers' and their helpers ' crimes were very heinous.
First of all the wooers took over all of Odysseus home town. He was originally trapped on an island and his son came to look for him and when he found him and brought him back to his home land. That’s when he find out. The wooers did horrible things to his people and took complete control over the land.
