The main character in Animal Farm, who is also the protagonist, is Napoleon. He is a round and dynamic character, who is described indirectly through his thoughts, speech and actions. To begin with, Napoleon is a metaphor for Joseph Stalin, the cruel dictator in the Russian Revolution. He is the central character in the novel and also the main tyrant. To begin with, although Napoleon isn’t the typical good guy in the novel, he is still considered the protagonist since he is the main character and he runs against the antagonist Snowball. Secondly, Napoleon is a round character since he is described vividly including his thoughts and feelings since he is complex. Thirdly, Napoleon is a dynamic character, for example, when Old Major died, Napoleon aspired for power. Yet when he gained power, it soon began to corrupt him. He began as a good leader, fighting for equality among all the animals. Sooner or later, he became the dictator. He took nine puppies from their mother and trained them to be his secret police to terrorize the animals and force them to obey him. Napoleon changed most rules in the seven commandments that he used to abide by at the beginning. “At this moment, all of the pigs leave the farmhouse in single file, all upright on two legs. Finally, Napoleon emerges from the farmhouse, upright and carrying a whip”. (Orwell, 140) Napoleon became more and more like a human. By the end of the book, he was walking on his hind legs and behaving just like Mr. Jones bringing the animals back to their miserable lives again. Also, Napoleon is characterized indirectly in the story through his thoughts speech and actions. Through all his actions, the readers are led to understand that he was a cruel dictator like leader. We learn that power corrupted him and he ended up ruining the animals’ future instead of building a better
