How Is The Industrial Revolution Used To Modernize Our Society

The industrial revolution was a period of rapid change that began around 1750 and went on well into the 1800s. The revolution began in Britain and was able to transform the culture and physical landscapes across England. These coal fuelled industries polluted the air with black smoke and covered the countryside with mining spoil. With the demand for more fuel came the destruction of countless forests and scenic landscapes. Despite being destructive, these industries also came with large profit and advancements in the everyday technologies. As it was both beneficial and damaging, a void was created separating the Romantics and the Enlightenment pragmatists. Tolkien wasn’t against the advancing technologies but expressed a deep remorse at the way modernized industries were devouring the landscapes and transforming human society. These concepts are both clearly portrayed with the use of symbolism within his novel.
** Thousands of people were killed as a result of the toxins being emitted by the newly constructed buildings. The burning of materials created a silent killer; a killer known as smog. A dense black mixture of fog and smoke that lingered in the air filling the lungs of all those near. The murderous aspect of the industrial revolution is represented by fire breath dragon known as Smaug. The phonetic similarity is not the only resemblance between the two entities. The natures of the two are similar in location. As smog lingers in the air Smaug glides through it. Next, the comparison between the ways in which they kill can be made.
