They also spend many hours outside of school and after they graduate to perfect every service they will offer. Although people think you can just pick up a pair of sheers and start cutting, you have to grow and develop. In Cosmetology school, the students will learn many things. Most schools start out in the classroom for four to eight weeks. In the classroom, everyone typically learns the state law first. After that students will learn sanitation rules and procedures. He or she then moves on to the history of Cosmetology. After that, students learn the basics and fundamentals of cutting, coloring, chemical services, styling, nails, skin, and waxing. Some things that vary from school to school are the color systems that are used like Matrix, Redkin, or Paul Mitchell. After one completes everything, and his or her instructor feels like they are ready, most schools then put their students out on the clinic floor and some classroom time. Some things that also vary are the teaching styles and different techniques that are taught through the books such as Milady. Many schools then have a class for people to take their last couple of weeks to practice for their state exam. This gives hands-on experience and time to go more in depth. Cosmetology is the general work on others hair and skin. The area of cosmetology I am going for is hair. I find working on other people’s hair fun and interesting. Makeup and nails are other areas of interest for me. I am going to be studying cosmetology to become licensed as an entrepreneur for hair, makeup, and helping to make the lives of others better. The amount of math courses that are needed to get a degree in cosmetology all depends on the state. Some states only require a few hours while other states may require a few days, weeks or even months of courses. We use a couple different types of math. Geometry and trigonometry are used to determine how a haircut will look with certain hair lengths, the growth pattern of a client’s hair, and the hairs density and elasticity. Geometry is also used to determine the interaction of color and light with different skin tones. Basic math skills are required if you want to run your own business. Even if you don’t run a business, while working for someone else, you need to determine how many clients you need to see per day to make a sufficient living.
