Salons need to stay current on the new trends and style within the hair industry and a local cosmetology school can help with that. Keeping a current relationship with the local school can help with the technicians learning new techniques from the local school. Most schools hold training classes and continued education courses for current stylist. The school may contact the salon and make them aware of upcoming courses and the manager will relay the messages to the current techs at the salon. Or the Salon and Spa owners will set up training courses to be taking at the salon.

Candidates must graduate from a state approved program for cosmetology. The board exam for a cosmetology has a wide variety of topics from a written test, oral exam and maybe even a skills test (Barbers, Hairdressers, and Cosmetologists). A cosmetologist may care for or service wigs or hair pieces; manicure; massage, clean, stimulate, manipulate, exercise, beautify or perform similar work upon the hands, arms, face, neck, or feet with hands or by use of cosmetic preparations, tonics, lotions or creams; place or apply artificial eyelashes, give facials, apply makeup, give skin care, or remove superfluous hair by tweezing, depilatories, or waxing.” In order to become a Cosmetologist, one must attend school for 1500 hours under an instructor focusing on theory and practicing to be able to take their final board examination which includes a written test and practical. They also spend many hours outside of school and after they graduate to perfect every service they will offer. Although people think you can just pick up a pair of sheers and start cutting, you have to grow and develop. In Cosmetology school, the students will learn many things. Most schools start out in the classroom for four to eight weeks. In the classroom, everyone typically learns the state law first. After that students will learn sanitation rules and procedures. He or she then moves on to the history of Cosmetology. After that, students learn the basics and fundamentals of cutting, coloring, chemical services, styling, nails, skin, and waxing. Some things that vary from school to school are the color systems that are used like Matrix, Redkin, or Paul Mitchell. After one completes everything, and his or her instructor feels like they are ready, most schools then put their students out on the clinic floor and some classroom time. Some things that also vary are the teaching styles and different techniques that are taught through the books such as Milady. Many schools then have a class for people to take their last couple of weeks to practice for their state exam. This gives hands-on experience and time to go more in depth. Every state has different requirements on the hours one needs. State requirements for hours range from 1,000 hours to 2,100 hours.

Cosmetology is the general work on others hair and skin. The area of cosmetology I am going for is hair. I find working on other people’s hair fun and interesting. The amount of math courses that are needed to get a degree in cosmetology all depends on the state. Some states only require a few hours while other states may require a few days, weeks or even months of courses. We use a couple different types of math. Geometry and trigonometry are used to determine how a haircut will look with certain hair lengths, the growth pattern of a client’s hair, and the hairs density and elasticity. Geometry is also used to determine the interaction of color and light with different skin tones. Basic math skills are required if you want to run your own business. Even if you don’t run a business, while working for someone else, you need to determine how many clients you need to see per day to make a sufficient living.

It could help you stay healthy or fit, it could help you with your hair and teeth, it could help you stay clean. Staying clean could lead you to a lot of things thats why personal hygiene is important.
