Hurricane Irma was a massive category five hurricane that has recently just hit Florida and “left an estimate of 10,000 people homeless” (Miami Herald,par. 1). Water and bread were very difficult to find, and gas lines would wrap around corners. Many people evacuated. Protecting homes, buying supplies, and having an evacuation plan are known as some of the best ways that people prepare for a category 5 hurricane. The best way to make sure homes stays safe during the hurricane is to make sure that it is fully protected. Putting up shutters prevents objects from breaking or damaging windows. Also, it is important to keep any objects “that could get tossed into the air and become debris during high winds” (AccuWeather, par. 30). Homes should be checked for any damages including loose shingles or any issues with the roof that could be repaired. Flashlights, batteries and candles are needed for when the power goes out. People also may have hurricane kits that contain blankets, clothing, and a radio. And when some evacuate they take valuable items with them including important documents and anything that may be irreplaceable. Naturally, when most people hear that a category five hurricane is coming, their first thought is to evacuate. Having an evacuation plan can help people stay safe when the hurricane hits. Planning how they leave and when they should leave is a big part in the whole process.
