I think the most effective part of this class was learning how to pull apart writing to figure out what the writing is trying to get across to their audience. I think by learning to figure out what the thesis of an writing is then it will help you to learn how to study better. This can help you learn how to study better because from a thesis one is able to draw together an outline of writing for what they may be reading. Another thing was to make students write an outline, writing an outline helps one to better organize and focus their writing. I think by writing from an outline it helped me to be a better writer due to fact that i know what i was trying to get across to my prospective audience. It also helped me to better gather together my
This class has been a big eye opener for me and I will be taking a lot of this information with me as I continue to complete other courses. What I have learned the most would be dealing with time-management and how to improve my essays by improving my writing skills. It is important to me to continue to improve on my writing as will help me become a better writer in the future.
Actually I learned many things from this class. First of all I learned how to write a thesis statement and the topic sentences. Then I got the idea about the hook sentences. I learned to add the transition sentences so that I could connect every paragraphs which makes the flow in the every paragraph. We also did the assignment of the rhetorical analysis about the advertisement which helped me to analyze the advertisement. In that assignment I learned about the ethos, pathos and logos. I knew how to bring the main idea of the essay into the body paragraphs. I learned to connect the sentences with each other’s. It helped to find my weakness and work on them.
Beginning with the literary context to the different themes; which happened to be one of my favorites, the class was informative and instructive. I have found that journaling what I am reading about has come to a new level. For example, I have been reading the book of Job and for each chapter I am breaking down what is happening, and putting it more as a bullet point process rather than a writing out every detail process. I have found that it actually helps me remember what was said in each chapter, and that it is easier to repeat back what I have read. My next step is to break it down even more to the knowing what audience it was for, and what were the key things that I can pull from the book and any themes it may have. And although I did not get to read the text book word for word, I am going to enjoy going back and studying it more in dept. This was a great class and I greatly enjoyed
In my opinion my writing ability before I arrived in this course at the University of Dubuque was fair, it wasn’t outstanding, but it wasn’t horrible. My biggest obstacles I faced in this course was coming up with a good topic to write about. Coming up with a topic you care about and can expand on your ideas can be a challenge. When learning to write in a more cohesive manner, I think the chapters we took notes on were very beneficial to improving my writing. It showed me the proper way to write a thesis and how to compose my papers. I also believe practicing our writing by journaling helped me learn to write what is going through my mind and it helped me to just learn to get my thoughts and ideas down on paper.
Being a student in this course has taught me quite a bit about my writing process. I went in to this class hoping it would not be too big of a challenge. As it turned out, every part of this course has been a test for me. I have truly enjoyed learning everything I have in this class. The two learning objectives I gained the most from were developing strategies for evaluating others’ work and engaging in prewriting activities.
The writing class allowed me to realize how important structuring and formatting can be especially for a supervisor and organization. The skills I learned from this class will always help me in making sure I properly go about writing documents, policies, resumes, letters, and other work related papers. My effective relations course has given me so many tools I can use when I am a leader in dealing with stress at the workplace, or building better communication with my employees, and solving conflicts between workers. My personal leadership course has taught me that as a leader I can never stop learning or growing with my
I have never had trouble with any of my English or writing class in the past, I have always enjoyed classes where I was encouraged to be critical, or look at writings in a technical fashion. To look at the authors and identify the style of writing, what the writer was attempting to convey, what the theme of the writing was. They were all topics that I found interesting.
When I began this class, I thought that I knew quite a bit about writing. However, as it progressed it soon became clear that I knew far less that I thought. This class has shown me how to take my personal skills, and adapt them to fit each type of writing. It has also taught me how to take my personal situations and form them into different styles of writing. For example, the first cause and effect piece was a basic narrative formed into a different style. When I worked on the third and fourth pieces, the use of transition words helped a lot.
Throughout the short time of being in this class we went over a lot of information that helped me advance in my writing and researching. Learned many things that will I will use throughout the rest of my life, such as how to research, and how to be persuasive. Those key learned topics will be used in the rest of my college career to my future workplace and in my own personal life.
The three main things we were taught in this class have improved for me. The writing process has changed how I write all of my essays. Before this class I wrote a rough draft then a final. My papers all include four different steps in them now. Prewriting, drafting, revising, and editing are all important steps. When we were prewriting
This course challenged me to different styles of writing than I have ever done in the past. At first, I struggled to write SOAP notes. This type of writing was so new, and I was not comfortable in my ability to write them. After getting feedback and discussions from class. I feel I could successfully write up a SOAP note if someone asked me to. This class also challenged my writing in that I had to focus on my audience for each assignment. As I discussed above the audience for each assignment varied greatly. In past English classes, the audience was normally just the English teacher, so the writing was very technical and formal. In this class, I had to adapt the audience to make my writings effective and
From taking this course I have been able to improve many of my weaknesses, but there are still some that I need to work on. Overall I am becoming better at not procrastinating as much as I used to. This class has helped me to learn to take the little steps along the way because then there will not be as much work to do towards the end. This has also made me realize that the final product of my writing will turn out better because it will have had more time to develop, which means that there would have been more opportunities to proofread. I think by learning many styles of writing, such as paraphrasing, summarizing, analyzing, and researching; it has enabled me to be able to write more broadly. By knowing how to correctly use all of these kinds of writing styles, it will help me in the future for other classes because I will have the knowledge that I need to write these types of papers. I still procrastinate sometimes, but not as much as I used to. I will be able to improve on this as time goes along because I will become more motivated by seeing the end result, which usually would be better grades.
What I have learned from this class is that writing better defines you as a person. When you write better you automatically speak better. I’ve also learned that time management is important. Speaking for myself, I have more day then time because I waste most of it by concentrating on irrelevant things. I am more focused, and just from one assignment I am already getting things done on time.
In my first assignment, I said that I would not consider myself a strong writer, describing that it is oftentimes difficult for me to get words out on the page. However, once I start actually writing, the words just flow out. Organization skills in regards to writing compositions was an area that I said I wanted to improve in. I also desired to challenge myself intellectually as a writer, and step out of my comfort zone of more formal, academic writing pieces. I believed that this expository writing class would be beneficial to my writing, and help me develop as a student and a writer. It was necessary that I learn how to change my style of writing, which is something I struggled with greatly. Nonetheless, I feel as if my writing did actually improved over the course of the year.
One of the first skills that I acquired in this course was learning how to make a thesis statement. Having a strong thesis statement is an imperative part to writing a well-rounded paper. This statement will educate the reader on what the paper is about as well as what the writer’s stance on the issue may be. For example, in my research paper I began with saying “Oil spills have not only been a problem in the United States, but they have also caused damage in many other countries. However, there is a set of safety measures and regulations that can be taken to help
