Drum Major Essay In the 2008-2009 school year, my brother, James LaFave, was a Drum Major of the band. Similar to now, he led the band while the program was searching for a sustainable band director, and needed a respectable authority figure, just as our wonderful current Drum Majors have performed. His time has come, and I believe it's my duty to continue this legacy. As a child, I wasn't involved in many sports or activities, leaving me with no groups I could interact with on the daily. Band has filled that gap for me. I have made many good and memorable memories, made many new friends, and involved myself in the community. I see myself as a well respected fellow band member that can be authoritative without causing conflict among others.
As my high school years come to an end, I've realized something about myself. Since I stepped foot in this school as an up and coming freshman I've noticed that the drum major truly captured my attention. It was like when little kids see someone cool on tv and think, “When I grow up, I'll be exactly like them.” That's exactly how I felt, when I became a senior I wanted to be that person. Finally the time has come for me to show that I am capable of being the best drum major Orland has ever seen.
Being involved in several activities at Skutt Catholic aspire and motivate me to reach and strife for success and accomplishment. A prime example of my accomplishments are shown in the band program. My commitment and passion for band goes deep within the band program. I strictly practice self discipline of constant repetition and long dedicated practices in order to receive superiors in districts and an alternate position in the Nebraska Allstate band my sophomore year. As a the drum major of the marching band I had to uphold several leadership skills that require essential attribute to the position. These essential attributes include excellent musical, marching, organizational, and communication skills, as well as a servant-leader attitude. Being the leader of the band demands that I become the best role model I can be for upperclassmen. For instance I am the first to arrive and leave at practices, I must always maintain a positive attitude at all times, and to humbly go the extra mile to serve the band. Another activity that symbolizes my character was football. Football was both a mental and physical struggle, but what truly motivated me to strap on the green and black helmet everyday was my deep respect for my loyal teammates and legacy of the football program built at Skutt Catholic. During
The position of drum major is a vital role in the entire team of a marching band. As the 2017 drum majors we promise that we will have the band in mind when making decisions and when developing the best show possible. As a group we know that we posses the necessary qualities of a drum major.
From freshman to senior year, I spend thousands of hours perfecting my craft and in return made longtime friends. As captain of the color guard my junior and senior year, I was able to guide others, give them confidence, and teach them a new skill set. As captain, I enjoyed helping those less experienced than I and ensured they had a positive environment. Additionally, my marching band and I faithfully attended nearby parades to liven spirits and to represent our area. The biggest events were football games, where the marching band and I entertained the crowd during halftime, promoting our high school and helping others enjoy the
The achievements of the Edgewood drum line has lead my transition from childhood to adulthood in many ways. My director has shown me how to be not only a good percussionist, but also a good leader. From these leadership qualities, I was able to lead our drum line to success in 2016. The the indoor drum line finals at the MEPA finals in 2016 where the Edgewood Drumline was awarded first place for our performance. This accomplishment was many years in development after getting third and second place for 3 years in a row. This achievement meant a lot to me and my peers at Edgewood, as it is one of the most major endeavors that Edgewood's music department has accomplished.
During this past school year I have contributed my time, effort and dedication into all of the rehearsals, practices, performances and every other thing I have done in this program. Hard work is another thing I have contributed to this band, not only through playing and memorizing music, but also by loading and unloading props, staying after school to set up for concerts, and by vacuuming and other cleaning tasks that are needed around the band room.
For the 2017-2018 SIHS marching band season, I am applying for the position of Drum Major. I am choosing to do so because I believe I am a strong and competitive candidate for multiple reasons. Something I think is very valuable in considering someone for a leadership role is their determination. In marching band, giving up is never an option no matter how hard things are. When you’re in charge of the entire band you can't give up because everyone's leaning back and relying on you.
Hi, if you didn’t know I’m Morgan Fish. When Shave was talking about getting a new drum major this year I got excited because ever since my oldest sister, Alison, was in marching band I had always been fascinated by drum majors. I went to all of the football games so I could watch the field show. The field shows were and still are the most exciting part of the football game to me and now that I am actually a part of the show it is much more exciting. I absolutely love marching band.
Building upon the invaluable benefits I gained through jazz band, my participation in our marching unit
One of the most influential leadership roles that I have had the honor of holding is being the drum majorette for my high school and junior high marching band. Included in this role, I not only conducted the band, but I energetically gave constructive criticism, provided encouragement, and listened to my fellow band members’ opinions. Relating to John Quincy Adams’ quote, I implemented goals regarding to success for individual band members and the band as a whole, essentially supporting my members to “dream more” and to see the bigger picture. Junior high members who joined our band this marching season were granted the opportunity to attend a pre-session with our band director and I before the start of band camp. During this session, the band director and I taught them marching fundamentals and presented them with tips relating to memorizing music and how to sufficiently mark their maneuvers in their music. This session allowed the junior high members to catch up with the older members and ,substantially, “learn more”.
Ever since Mrs. Bissell mentioned about Marching at Football Games, Showcase, and Parades, I knew I wanted to be a drum major but she said I would be better off as a color guard member in the back. From that day on, I want to prove her wrong by joining Marching Band. You don’t need to be the greatest or the best player to have leadership skills. No everyone was born to be a successful leader, but it takes a lot of practice, responsibility and a positive mindset to have the skills. I was influenced to become a drum major from Aaron, Christian, and the pervious drum majors because all of them left band with a legacy no one will ever forget. But, it’s not just the previous drum majors I was influenced by. Nick, Michael, Vy, Mr. Sebastian, and my wonderful section leader Sarah also inspired me too. However, many previous drum majors set the standards at a high level and it's my privilege to keep the tradition going by setting the standards even higher. One reason why I will be a good candidate is, I want to be one of the leaders who can help other marching band members and listen to their problems, because I love helping everyone and put a smile on their
I want to try to my best capability to help and further the potential of this band. Even though we are losing many great seniors this year- we can still pursue greater things. I have nearly been on leadership before and I understand the values and expectations that have already been set. I enjoy working alongside all the fellow students here in the band and can’t wait for next marching season!
This past school year what I have contributed was my loyalty, my punctuality, and more. I contributed my loyalty by not talking bad about the band and not moving away. I have been to every competition, game, exhibitions, and practice besides one practice when I had to go to the hospital due to my ankle. I also help out as much as I can. I volunteered for the Sonic Night and I came in on time and worked. I also helped unload the fruit from the fundraiser. I also was a Region Band Page and helped out with that.
As a kid I always wanted to play the drums. When I was three years old my godmother gave me my first drum. It was a blue plastic remo drum that I love and I still have. It has white stripes that go vertically and it has two black remo pin strip drum heads. Drumheads are the surface, which you strike with a drumstick to produce a sound. The drum came with a pair of cheap plastic remo brand drumsticks. That I hardly use became if I do, I would probably break the drumsticks.
By definition a drummer is a person or persons who plays a drum or drums, but I classify a true drummer as someone with patients that carries the song to give it a rhythmical beat. There’re many drummers out there and all of them are the same and some are different I identify myself as one of the different drummers. Some may ask what makes me different from other drummers? What makes me different from many other drummers is that I taught myself how to play without any professional lessons just youtube, me, and my younger cousin that’s all I had to teach me how to play. That wasn’t easy which brings me to the misconceptions that people have about drummers, a lot of people think that the drums are easier to learn how to play than any other instrument when it requires the same amount of hard work and dedication. I don’t own a drum which makes it even harder to practice but when I was practicing I had to learn a lot of information and techniques just like any other instrument. I had to learn how to move my left foot and right foot at separate times, how to move my hands differently, and what drums made what sound. All of those are things anyone should learn when playing an instrument, for example learning how to play the piano.
