I remember our double header against Bark River were my best games. I caught several popflies and the first time I was up to bat I hit the ball deep into center right over the center fielder’s head. The second time I was up to bat I got a double. I was so proud of how great I played and my coaches were too.

Though the practices performed within softball literacy do not immediately seem as if they should be considered a literacy practice, according to two of the six propositions about the nature of literacy, it is. Not only does it involve the physical performance from a play, but also includes formal writings, new rules and regulations, and offer different rules in different countries. For me, softball was something that has made me who I am today. Whether it be the welcoming community or the constant push to make myself better at the game.. Softball literacy is also filled with artifacts that make us a community within our team and a community with other softball players.

As I started to grow as a player, I wanted to take my level of play to the next level. Making the transition from recreational ball, to highly competitive select softball came natural for me to compete against. I became more confident with the level of ball I was playing when I wanted to start doing something that many people couldn’t do. Something was different that I noticed was some players ran through the left side of the box while batting. That’s something that would make me unique, and I knew that this is something that I wanted to learn how to do. I asked my coach if I could learn how to slap and if it was the best thing for me to learn at the time. He explained how to bat like that to me, and gave me the confidence that I could do it. Learning something that is not normal and natural for you can be very challenging. I would look up videos on how to slap from how to do the footwork along with how to hit correctly. For many years, I would go to a private hitting instructor every week to work on my slapping. Gradually, I would improve my hitting stills from the practice I was putting in. Every game I had was an improvement, yet there were some bad days along with, whether it be I didn’t get a hit or striking out. As soon as I made my very first varsity baseball appearance, I knew that I had to be the very best I could be or there was never going to be a chance of ever putting on that white and maroon crisp cleaned dri-fit Russel number 18 jersey. My heart was beating beyond faster than it should be at my first at bat because I had always heard “Just wait you haven't seen nothing yet, wait till you face them varsity pitchers.” Players older than me had constantly been saying that throughout my freshman season and it kept repeating over and over in my head like a broken record. Although I had studied the pitcher and had seen with my very own eyes, he wasn’t as good as everyone talked him up to be. I was still overawed and very nervous about messing up.

Softball is a sport that is known throughout the United States and the world. Softball originated on Thanksgiving Day in Chicago in 1887. The game was actually said to have begun as an indoor game. Softball was started by a group of men who had gathered at a club to watch the Harvard vs. Yale football game. When the news came that Yale had defeated Harvard, 17-8, one Yale supporter, overcome with enthusiasm, picked up an old boxing glove and threw it at a nearby Harvard alumni, who promptly tried to hit it back with a stick. This gave George Hancock, a reporter for the Chicago Board of Trade, an idea. He suggested a game of indoor baseball. Naturally, Hancock's friends thought he was talking about playing a game outdoors, not indoors.

I enjoy helping others pursue their passions and achieve their goals. Softball is a sport that has taught me many important life lessons including teamwork, leadership, and dedication. As softball is a sport that has taught me so much, I spent several weeks of my high school summers volunteering at softball camps. It was always rewarding to see the young girls discover their passion for the game just as I did when I was their age.

Blood, sweat and tears. All for one sport you love. Going to the fields, putting my cleats on and batting.(Cumulative) From the time I stepped on the diamond, I knew softball was going to be something I was good at. Usually most people start off playing t-ball and work their way up to the big leagues. Not me. I started my third grade year. Of course I was hesitant (nervous), but I got over that fast enough. I played every position possible. I was a strong hitter (usually making it on base every time). But that’s 10 u. Over the years, I became exceptionally good at softball. I had many compliments on how good I was. Parents were telling my parents how good I was. But that was only the beginning.

Do you want to be able to beat everyone at the next home run derby? Ok you may not go to any home run derbies or be in softball, but learning to swing a bat correctly can give you an upper hand and give you something to teach other people. When you are a parent and your kid wants to learn the sport of softball or baseball you will be able to teach them the perfect fundamentals in swinging a bat. There is a lot more to swinging a bat than what most people think. When you think about swinging a bat do you think about your feet, your head, your hands, or your hips? I don’t think most people do. Well these hitting fundamentals will teach you how to have the perfect swing and these four easy stages will help you to teach others and if you want to hit the farthest.

Softball has always been my favorite sport. It’s the fast pace of my heart as I’m rounding the bases, fast as lightning, making contact with the corner of the grungy white bases with a heavy coat of red dirt layering the edges, prepared to dive into home base, the sound of the bat making solid compact with the bright, attention grabbing yellow ball, the smell of the dew delicately resting on the fields of green grass, giving everyone a relaxed feeling of being in nature.

As a child, I grew up playing softball and that 's it. My mom played softball, my cousins played softball. It’s just all I knew. When I reached the seventh grade at Gardner Dickinson (my elementary and middle school), my friends all played soccer and I reluctantly joined as well. Each year I had my ups and downs with soccer, but it grew to be a part of who I am and has taught me a lot of things. For example, to try new things, to work hard, to never give up, and to step up and be a leader.

After walking onto the field at seven years old, I found my passion, my strength, and my world. Softball has been in my life for the past ten years, and I intend to play in college if I’m given the opportunity, nevertheless, I am going to fight to play. Playing softball has changed my life; I do not know where I would be without it. It has given me the best experiences in life, and I have made long term friends while playing. I hit my first homerun at 12 years old, and have been a power hitter ever since.

“ Mira mi princesa, hermosa como su mama, también juega softball como su mama asi mismo” - “ Look at my princess, beautiful like her mommy, she also plays softball like her mom, that’s it.” Ever since my father said that to me, it stuck with me. Firstly, because I look up to my mom so many words can't even describe, well a few can, for instance strong, charismatic, kind, beautiful, smart, wise and so much more. It all started, when I was six years old when my parents put me in tee-ball, I hated it so much, in the beginning, I remember I would create excuses after excuses to not play. Because back then I was being forced to do something I definitely didn't want to do, but as I got older, I was starting to get a feel for it, and slowly started to love the sport.

“Not everyone is going to see or accept you for who you are, and you have to accept that.” I was told this quote everyday by my mother. Today was no different, walking up to the raked field, quote on my mind , eyes on the fresh red clay, and the sound of my metal cleats against the concrete. I was ready for this day. After months of hard work from November to February , the tryouts for Central softball team were over. Over the span of four months, I pushed myself harder than I ever thought I could, but what I did never seemed to be enough for the team.

Fourth grade comes around faster then I thought,when you are the kid prodigy catcher at recess. Nick and I always felt on top of the world,throwing signs up. Striking kids out was the best u just felt great. But one day a kid went over the line and flipped out. When two fourth graders were on top of the world,but one day their vibe was killed!

It had been an unbelievable season so far, we were going into the championship game of junior league with only two losses. Of course, the only other team with a better record than us was the black team. We gave them their only loss on the second game of the regular season. Now, after defeating the better of the Mosinee teams in the semi finals, my dad, who was also the coach of our blue team, had stopped to watch the rest of the game between black and red.
