I am writing to explain why I am qualified to become one of your student in your Writing 2 course. Over the years of my academic life I have taken numerous literature classes, which accelerated my comprehension in reading and writing, preparing me for this course. I wish to enroll in this course to further refine these skills and learn more about how creativity plays an important role in writing and in my life. In addition, I hope to unravel and share my creativity with the rest of my colleagues through future discussions and essays.
During High School, I had many experiences writing essays in both my regular and advance placement classes (A.P.). In my A.P Art History and United States History classes, I learned how to write strong analytical essays given only a couple documents or an unknown painting and using any knowledge I have on the subject. In addition, I also read a wide variety of books from American Literature such as John Stein’s “Grapes of Wrath” to European Literature such as Beowulf, all of which have widen my perspective of types of literature that exists. Furthermore, I had also taken a class this past summer though the W.O.R.D program funded by UCSC, preparing me for college

Usually when I write my essay, I find a quiet spot and start jogging down random ideas of the top of my head on paper. Then afterwards, I would start researching ideas on the topic, looking at articles that seem important to my essay. When I’m done writing all the ideas I could think of, I would organize them into paragraphs and form my outline. My outlines often contains several criterias: a hook, introduction, thesis, supportive arguments, and finally a conclusion that ends with a new idea. Thus leading to my rough draft and lastly my final paper. I believe that a plan is essential for succeeding in anything you do because if you don’t have one, you are setting yourself up for failure and I plan on succeeding in this
Writing is a practice that most of us were taught when we were young. We were taught the basics of grammar, how to form a sentence, conjunction words, how to write paragraphs and more. Although we have learned this skill while growing up and have used the skill every year after entering kindergarten, this does not mean our writing process will ensure the best work. The authors that I chose each encourage their audience to excel in the art of writing in their own way to help with the writing process.
Upon entering English 111, I knew I would be writing papers. However, I did not anticipate how much room I had for improvement. Throughout this term I have been enlightened with so much knowledge that I may have forgotten or have been exposed to for the first time. Certainly, my experience with essay writing has been solidified due to newfound knowledge of proper work citing, MLA standards and the steps of planning an essay. Perhaps, my time away from a learning environment slowed me down a bit, other times I feel as though I have an advantage due to life experience. An online environment has certainly been challenging but throughout the course I have provided solid work and consistent grades commendable of an A grading.
I totally agree with what the author is saying in the text. It takes time to get a good product out even though we think some people are deep and wonderful they still have the same struggles that we have when it comes to writing. I like this text because it is realistic it is giving an account of first drafts from common day people and shows how it is even for professional writers have problems with. This point is important because as people we sometimes feel we are not as good or capable of doing something not realizing that the people we look up to have the same problems we do. Another point that I agree with the author on is that you have to start somewhere. Many times as writers we don’t know where to start when it comes to writing. That being said we will just sit and think for ten twenty minutes when we could've just been information on the paper and then editing it later. In addition I liked that the author used examples from his professional experience when it came to writing food reviews. By him using details like how he went to the restaurant and sat down with friends and took notes of what was said. This was good to me because it helps me connect with him and the things that he does to write his reviews.
I can honestly say, my writing skills have never been good, and taking this class has challenge me to grow in my writing by teaching me different writing techniques. This class has helped me in so many ways, not only has it thought me how to format and essay, but it showed me how to write my ideas and explore my options. I know that what I learn from this class will help me in my future, when writing letters, emails, and even my resume. I also really like that it gave me a My writing lab, which really helped me work on my grammar. My suggestion for future students who take this class, read all the resource the teacher gives you, as well as take time to read the books. Find a place where is nice and quiet, where you can let all your ideas flow
This semester you had taught us some interesting things, some which help me on my writing. I have truly see improvement in my writing from the start of the semester. You had asked us to work on our portfolio these past weeks. Which I believe I did a pretty a good job. I work hard on it I did went to go get help and that was very helpful. Hopefully my portfolio is good for you.
Writing has been a challenge for me. After reading the feedback you gave me for my essays, I realized how bad my writing was. While reading my journal, I found the following note: “I was able to summarize and to point out the main ideas of what the authors were trying to say”. Obviously, I did not know how to incorporate those ideas to my argument. Analyzing the articles I was reading and using evidence to support my argument was an issue as well. I struggled with the structure & organization of my essays and making my paper longer. My paragraphs were disconnected, and I had trouble establishing my thesis. I had lot of work to do so that my portfolio revision could be at least, acceptable. To write a better essay, I had to understand what the authors were trying to say and the only way I could understand these articles was by annotating. We talked about this technique in class at the beginning of the semester. And to be honest, I did not use it until now. My first attempt of writing the conversation paper was a complete disaster. My writing was confusing, and my ideas were vague. How could I write a good paper if I had no idea what the authors were trying to say?
If there is anything that this class has taught me, it is that writing is more complex than I ever imagined. I have concluded that writing is like a cake- the good ones are creative with many layers. Coming from a small public school, I was raised on the five paragraph essay style. If you were to get a pile of my senior classes final research papers, it would be hard to tell them apart. We all wrote the same, and our style hardly changed from second grade on. Metaphorically speaking, we all created the same plain vanilla cake.
Writing, the bases of change around the world. People around the world use writing as a way to connect to others and to form a bond with others. I have learned what it takes to heighten my writing and create pieces of work that lays a template of my further growth. As I learned how to perform better on my reports than what I was previously able to do. Through each report I had continued to learn more about my shortcomings and had progressed to a beyond passable grade. It is because to my development that I can confidently say that I have reached all the needed criteria that is needed to pass GSW 1110.
Before I came to college, I felt my writing had to follow a certain pattern and be fixated around one way of thinking. What I was fortunate to learn was quite the opposite. Writing does not have to follow any certain pattern, but can rather be structured through many different possibilities. I was also told in high school that my papers either had to agree or disagree with the given topic, even if I believed otherwise. This formulated a very one-track way of thinking when it came to my papers. Now I know that I can let my mind explore new and exciting ideas. I can agree, disagree, compliment, criticize, and question the author however my heart desires, as long as I have the evidence to back myself up. Many authors in the book, Writing About Writing, explain their processes as well as the processes of others when it comes to writing. As a writer, I can draw on my own processes and relate them to the authors, as well as use their ideas and apply them to myself. Through reading, I have learned new methods of invention, planning and revising, and incubation when it comes to writing. All ways I can use to create more meaningful and creative work.
I have chosen to explore the “Writing Process” that I used while drafting my argumentative paper on sloths in the rainforest for this reflective essay. I am choosing this topic and this particular essay because my writing process was a key component to the ‘C’ I made on the project and how my failure in this particular area lead me to this grade. Looking back, I realized that the grade I received is a perfect reflection of the effort I put into the writing process. I believe that I had the power to make an A if I would have slowed down and completed the essay the right way. From an outline all the way to the final draft I will be reflecting on my paper and the journey I took to complete it.

Overall, taking this course has taken me from an undeveloped thinking process to an adequate thinker. Before taking this course, I would respond to an action, a statement or an opinion given by someone, without taking the time to think about what the question at hand was, what the problem was, or even trying to understand the others point of view. Now I have gained the knowledge to response to any situation with the correct format. I also, have learned to become a bit more open minded. Furthermore, I did not understand that my upbringing could be an impediment of mines when responding to certain situations. Everyone’s up bringing is not the same. Everyone’s morals and values are not the same. So I have learned from taking this course, not to
Before this class, I absolutely despised writing. I hated writing about things I had no interest in. Teachers always used to tell me what to write about and I never seemed to have a choice. Coming into expository writing, I thought it was going to be strictly essay based. I didn’t even sign up for this class, so I immediately thought it would suck. It turns out, I was wrong. Essays can be fun as long as you enjoy what you are writing about. I like how we get assigned a topic, but from there you can personalize it. This class surprised me. I didn’t realize how much fun writing could be.
The ability to write is a creative thing, so unique much like a fingerprint. The way someone decides to choose their words and organize their sentences is something is solely based on their preference. From English 105 with Segall, one obtains plenty of valuable knowledge that Will be used throughout their college career.
What makes up a good family? Does your family communicate well? These are the questions that many people in America ask. They battle with these questions everyday when they think about the way their family acts. I have also battle with these questions especially when it comes to my family. My family is one of uniqueness, which causes lots of conflicts. I battle an individualistic sister, a communitarian mother, and a civic republican brother. With all these different personalities in the house it is no wonder it seems like our house is a lifestyle enclave. Looking at my family is like looking at American homes today. It shows the effect of a society that is all about on the go activities.
