6:00 a.m.: Winston woke in the morning happy that spring break was finally upon him. He only had to bare school for one more day and then he would be able to do whatever he chose. His parents would be in California all of break and they were leaving him home alone. Winston was ready for some time to himself. 7:30 a.m.: Winston rushed out of his house, got into his car and headed towards school. Today, he had put on his favorite outfit -- worn blue jeans and a red plaid shirt that his grandmother had given him last Christmas. The lack of other drivers on the road on the way to school surprised him. The sunrise was pretty though -- it seemed to have the usual reds as well as some cooler colors like green, which he noted as unusual. He arrived at school and pulled up next to Roy's truck. He grabbed a bucket and set out. The stream was a 30 minute walk from the camp, but most of the way there was downhill. Arriving at the stream, Winston noticed there were wet spots on the rocks which seemed to be in the shape of feet; he didn't think much of it, but something felt off the entire time he was there. He ignored the feeling and focused on getting back to camp without spilling any water. 7:45 a.m.: When he got back to camp, Winston thought it odd that many of the tent doors were open and things seemed to be in a mess. What was even more odd was the fact that no one was in the camp. As he examined the scene more closely, he saw that several people had even left their shoes. "Everyone here must have left in a hurry. What were they running from?" thought Winston. 5:00 p.m.: Winston had left the camp soon after he discovered a trail through the underbrush that had seemingly been created by the fleeing inhabitants of the camp. He had been following the trail all day and had not yet seen another person. He was pushing through a bush when he saw that some of the leaves were stained red. It was
He remembered being hungry when he was little and he begged for food. One day he had stolen a piece of chocolate from his little weak sister. He ran outside and ate it and didn’t come home for a few hours. And that was the last time he saw his mother and his little sister. That memory of his mom holding his little sister reminds him if the proles and reminds him that they are still human even though the type of life it is. Winston and Julia discuss their relationship and how they would feel or what they would do when they get caught. Julia thinks that the party won’t make them believe their confessions, and Winston agrees. Winston and Julia both goes to O’Brien house, and tell him that they are both enemies of the party. O’Brien tells them about the secrete brotherhood and how it’s a group that’s formed to eliminate the party and offers them to join it. O’Brien mad an arrangement for Winston to get a copy of “the book”. Winston asked O’Brien to sing the last part to Mr. Charringtons nursery rhyme and he did, it took Winston by
Winston walked down the sidewalk, a sense of apathy after his encounter with O’Brian in room 101 on several occasions, a sense of love; apathetic, emotionless love, for Big Brother. Winston did not remember what had happened in Room 101, nor how long he had been there for. Winston headed towards the park where he would meet the dark-haired girl he knew as Julia. Winston had an unexplainable emotion trapped inside his conscious, wanting to break free.
Barry couldn't believe that it was morning already, he went to sleep at 1 a.m because he stayed up binge watching his favorite show.“Barry wake up, it's 7:30!” Diana yelled as she rushed into her son's room. “Mom! Why didn't you wake me up earlier?, it's the first day of school!” was what came out Barry’s mouth although he knew that it was his fault like always. Barry stared at his alarm clock, which was completely silent, no noise or numbers reflecting off the screen to let Barry know that it was time to get ready for his first day of middle school. The day brightened considerably, the shadows were stretching in the opposite direction from what Barry had seen yesterday in his first day in New York. His father, Daniel, and Diana rush into the car since it was Daniel’s first day as well, at his new job in the famous World Trade Center. "Ready for your big day today champ?”, Barry didn't answer because of the memories that rushed through his brain of all his friends, teachers, and his grandpa.
The language of this passage, illustrates Winston’s frantic thoughts and worries, by having long, and sometimes grotesque sentences, describing life, death, and suicide, the current topics circulating Winston’s mind. Prior to this passage, Winston’s had just had an encounter with the dark-haired girl, where he believing her to be a spy who was following him, contemplated killing her, but found himself unable to. In this passage he’s very overwhelmed by this past event and his thoughts are portrayed in long, sentences, that show the current hopelessness he feels. He thinks to himself; “On the battlefield, in the torture chamber, on a sinking ship, the issues you are fighting are always forgotten, because the body swells up until it fills the universe, and even when you are not paralyzed by fright or screaming with pain, life
In the chapter, Winston and his father finish their lunches and head down the road again. Before they left, Winston spent a lot of time thinking. He thought about how his father was always doing things to make him happy and how he did the same when he was younger. His dad turned on the radio and another Sinatra song started playing and his father starting singing along. To get him to turn it down, Winston asked his dad where they were going. They were headed to watch Terry run. His dad also wanted to get other people’s point of view on the situation. His dad was in the middle of explaining something when he was suddenly interrupted by Winston. Winston had spotted Terry running the Marathon of Hope and even got to see someone give Doug a donation
Winston stood directly in front of the blinding telescreen. He held the note that Julia had just passed to him underneath his scrawny chin. As he stared forward, the telescreen had consequently left a white glow upon his already dull complexion. Winston had not even read the note, but he was aware that the passing of it was a crime in itself. Gazing across to Julia, who had maintained her stride through the Ministry of Truth, directed towards the cubicles. He wondered what would come of her heinous offense. Winston remained in this stance until the telescreen revealed an instruction to him: ‘Find her and guide her to Victory Square, we will be waiting to commence the arrest.’
Winston wonders vaguely whether in the abolished past it have been a normal experience just like love when and who you want and have simply peace with no deep fears (150). He knows that there is always eyes watching you and the voice enveloping you. , asleep or awake, indoors or out of doors, in the bath or bed there is no escape(29). Winston thinks more frequently about the current situation after beginning a relationship with Julia; his anger rises as well as his desire to change how society operates. A true hero is courageous and does not fear standing up for his rights, even if there is danger involved.
Winston’s childhood years were harsh because he didn't have affection from either of his parents and being sent away at such a young age for school. But because of the time period he grew up in that was the way families were, especially if they were wealthy. Winston was a troublesome child while he was away at school but that was because he was sent to a school that he didn't like. As he got older and went to schools that suited him, like the military school Sandhurst, he grew out of that phase of rebellion. But the examinations that he was required to take and pass to get into Sandhurst, was another hard time because he failed them twice. Instead, of deciding to give up he just looked for other routes to pass his examinations, for example,
Winston had a reoccurring dream which found himself standing in front of a wall of darkness of which on the other side there was something to dreadful to face. He always woke up prior to finding out what was on the other side. After awaking during one of Winston and Julia’s rendezvous in the rented room above Mr. Charrington’s shop, Julia noticed a rat. Sowing his fear Winston shrieked. Julia trying to calm Winston, she grabbed a shoe and threw it towards the rat which was peeking out of the
Winston and Julia begin to meet in a small room above Mr. Charrington’s antique shop. One of the days they decide to meet, they discuss what is in store for their future, now that they have been inducted into the Brotherhood. After concluding that they are dead, a voice coming from behind the picture of St. Clement’s Church echoes back everything they say. Winston and Julia realize they have been caught by the Thought-Police.
Winston Smith arrived at his home at the Victory Mansions during a horrible blizzard. The house looked spooky with the smell of old cabbage stained throughout the halls and portraits whose eyes would follow him. Winston was a normal man, working at his job in the Records Department. Nothing really out of the ordinary. He is sort of pessimistic in some ways.
Winston’s eyes flew open all he was completely encased in darkness. His hand groped around as he struggled for light. The room was dimly aglow, casting eerie shadows on the objects in the room. Including the figure laying perfectly still on the be next to him. “Julia Julia,” he hissed, speaking law so the telescreens microphone couldn’t pick it up. “Wake up” The woman rolled over and blearily opened her eyes. Winston gasped slightly and took his hands off her. “Katherine?” “husband?” she said with the nicest voice. “Who is Julia?” she said very angrily. “please stop thrashing.” Said Winston. “I would get a good sleep tonight tomorrow is our day.” said Katherine. Winston said “our day” he had no clue what she was talking
Winston: Winston starts out as a normal thirty-nine year old guy. He is a records editor in the Records Department at the Ministry of Truth. He drinks, smokes, and hates exercising. He has an ulcer on his ankle and he loves to write. Winston wears blue overalls and eats synthetic food. Winston hates that the party oppresses everything. With his job, he is able to learn all the real truth that the party does not want the other members of the party to know. He keeps a journal of all the real truth in his house so that if he ever needed to expose big brother, he could.
I drew Winston, hand in hand with Julia, walking down a hallway. The hallway intentionally lacks colour and is drawn to appear white and spotless as described in the quote, “The passage down which he led them was softly carpeted, with cream paper walls and white wainscoting, all exquisitely clean”. I added a thought bubble above Winston to signify him remembering only contaminated, grimy hallways, “Winston could not remember ever to have seen a passageway whose walls were not grimy from the contact of human bodies”. The endlessness of the hallway, and the minuscule size of Winston and Julia signify the fear in them in this part of the chapter. What they were facing was unknown and scary, and they couldn’t be sure how it would end, they must
Winston is reminiscing about Julia and listening to the news about the war while sitting the in cafe. He was thinking about how much he despised the presences of Big Brother and how Julia once told him that he could control his own reality, however, he thought she was wrong. After experiencing immense amounts of torture from the government, he now no longer has the ability to control his own thoughts. As soon as the victory of the war was announced, Winston felt a wave of joy, love, and sense of security because
