The medium that is YouTube has been in existence for a mere eight years. In February 2005 Steve Hurley registered the name ‘YouTube’ and in May of 2005 Hurley, Steve Chen and a small group of employees launched the site www.youtube.com. In 2006 Google acquired YouTube for a reported two point two billion dollars (A brief history of YouTube) and in the same year a mash-up video of dance crazes over the last fifty years becomes the most watched video in YouTube history at the time with 131 million plus views (Lidsky, 2010). In 2007 YouTube in conjunction with CNN hosted their first Presidential debate with questions asked by citizens via video (Lidsky, 2010) and in 2009 a recording of Susan Boyle’s audition on a British television show …show more content…

People are reluctant to pay for subscriptions to read content that in many cases has been sourced from platforms such as YouTube when they can readily obtain the material for free themselves and openly discuss and form opinions about the material with other viewers. Many established YouTube users are now reaching a wider audience than any of the main stream media outlets could ever wish to achieve, for example “user Phil DeFranco, whose channel on YouTube, as pointed out by a recent article in Fast Company, has beaten 'Larry King Live' and 'The O'Reilly Factor' in daily audience” (Yen, 2010). As a means of communicating, YouTube has developed in to a form of interaction between individuals and communities much the same as blogging with the use of video logging, known as ‘vlogs’ by which users post short video messages that highlight an activity from their day or an incident of interest to be shared with others who share similar interests. The uploading of personal videos that promote ones self, interest or talent has increased in use to the extent that many of our modern celebrities have attributed their rise to stardom from using the YouTube platform, Justin Bieber and Greyson Chance just to name two (Elliot, 2011).
