After the war people came back with ideas and popular toys came out. Like the hula hoop, it was very popular. But most people don’t know the history of the hula hoop. First wham-o made the hula hoop in 1958. Also it dates back to the 1400’s (Hula Hooping). The history of the hula hoop is how it first was discovered, what it looks like and how it became so popular. To start out with the hula hoop was made in a garage. The hula hoop was made by Spud Melin and Richard Knell. Second Billy Joel refused to sell the 100 millionth hula hoop (Take a Field Trip Through the 60’s). He did not sell it because he thought it had a historical value. The hula hoop dates back a very long time. It existed in Egypt, Greece, and Rome a long long time ago. First
Since its conception and development, skateboarding has been a controversial public activity. This negative reputation dates back to the origins of skateboarding and to fully understand the issue we must understand the history of skateboarding. In the 1950’s, many different surfers had the idea to put roller skate wheels on 2x4 wooden planks and “surf” the streets when they couldn't actually surf in the ocean during periods of low tide. This was the public's first impression of what would eventually evolve to become skateboarding; long shaggy haired surfers riding through the streets on planks of wood that could barely turn and would result in frequent injuries. The sport developed through the 1960’s and reached its peak in 1963. During this
The evolution of the drums has varied from being made from a simple wood log, to having a hollow object covered in rawhide, to being completely electronic. Like any instrument, each one produces a different sound. Some may sound light like a snare, deep like a bass, or metronomic by simply producing a clicking noise to keep count. Some are completely electronic, even.
Lovely Hula Hands: Corporate Tourism and the Prostitution of Hawaiian Culture written by Haunani Kay Trask was written in 1993. Trask wrote this paper to inform Americans about what she thinks of tourism, a “colonial imposition” towards the Hawaiian culture. Trask incorporates ethos, pathos and logos throughout her essay to show how tourism effects these three points in the Hawaiian culture: The homeland, the language and dance of the culture and the familial relationships.
Basketball was invented by James Naismith in 1839. The objective was to throw the basketball into fruit baskets strapped to the railing of the gym balcony. As you can see the game of basketball has changed tons over the years and continues to grow.
The story of the Hokulea, a model of the first canoes that brought the first Polynesians to Hawaii, is a story that restores cultural pride and history to Hawaiians. Her legacy was almost extinct, but survived and restored the relationship that society has with its island home. More than 600 years had gone by without seeing one of these canoes, until artist Herb Kane thought to build a sailing canoe just like the ones his ancestors sailed (Hokulea.com).
Basketball started in 1891. It has now grown into one of the most popular sports in history. Basketball was invented in December 1891 by Canadian James W. Naismith. An instructor at the YMCA Training School in Massachusetts, he sought a suitable indoor game to keep his students fit and warm during the cold New England winters. With wire mesh backboards. He formulated 13 rules, most of which still apply today. In 1893, the first women’s game was played at the Smith College, in Northampton, Massachusetts, USA. And soon to spread all over the world.
The Ghost Dance was a sign of hope for the Native American that they truly believed in. The fact that many of them would dance till unconscious shows the determination and faith that the Native Americans had in the hope of being free once again. Not many citizens in this day and age have faith as strong as the Native Americans; which, can be quite disheartening at times. It is infuriating how the government treated civil, non-threatening, cooperative human beings known as Native Americans. In fact, those Native Americans were people that rightfully belonged to those native lands. The general policy came across as not even seeing these people as actual human beings more as an unwanted nuisance that could be controlled by means of arbitrary acts
The experience of the hula movement session as well as hula itself is difficult to write about and analyze at length for a number of reasons. To start, hula is relatively simple, not to learn, but as a social wonder and characteristic of Hawaii. Although the dance possesses religious undertones the documentary mentioned that sincere hula dancers appeal to the Hawaiian gods to assist them it certainly isn 't driven by an overbearing religious impulse. Furthermore, although hula and its sagas are transmitted from generation to generation as oral traditions (211), the traditions are not sustained out of fear, intimidation, or social status. On the
The bow was first used by the Native Americans in Iowa, near 500 AD. The Indians constructed their bows using items in their environment. These materials included wood, antlers, horns, bones, and even animal intestines. Many bows were made short and more durable for using on horseback. All the other bow were made longer and meant for shooting long distances. The strings for the bow could be made of various materials, depending on what was available to them. (www.historyoffighting.com) The strings were mainly
Hokule’a began in 1973 with Ben Finney, and many other canoe enthusiasts, who created the Polynesian Voyaging Society with the intention to sail from Hawaii to Tahiti and back. The design for the Hokule’a was made by Herb Kawainui Kane and Kenneth Emory. In 1975, construction of the Hokule’a was finished and by 1976, the roundtrip from Hawaii to Tahiti began. The whole purpose of the Hokule’a, meaning Star of Gladness, was to bring back the skill, navigation, and bravery that the Polynesians had as they sailed to their new home, Hawaii. More importantly, to prove that the voyage of the Polynesians to the islands was not a work of fiction, but a completely possible thing to accomplish.
For generations, Hula dancers would gather blossoms and leaves from the Ohia forests to decorate themselves at the hula competition. This year competitors are avoiding the flower so they do not spread a fungus, rapid ohia death that is killing the ohia trees. This fungus can wipe out the native forests and watersheds, if the ohia trees are wiped out in Hawaii, they become globally extinct. The disease is only on the big island for now but fear spreads as the day of competition comes closer. Soon many people will come to Hilo for the festival and may accidentally spread the fungus. Hula dancers spend all year planning moves to tell a story, this year’s message “don’t go into
The first known appearance of the hurdy-gurdy was in Europe during the 12th century. Specifically, earliest art pieces of the hurdy-gurdy are in various churches and cathedrals in Spain and in France. While there are speculations that the instrument may have been
The strong presence of military occupation resulted from a bottom-up process in which settler’s desires for the economic prosperity and opportunity compelled them to migrate and stake their claim to these territories. Interactions between the local Hawaiians, international tourists, and the US military shaped the theory of settler colonialism. Trask writes “Just five hours away by plane from California, Hawai’i is a thousand light years away in fantasy”. She continues saying “Hawai’i is the image of escape from the rawness and violence of daily American life. Hawai’i-the word, the vision, the sound in the mind-is the fragrance and feel of soft kindness. Above all, Hawai’i is ‘she’, the Western image of the Native ‘female’ in her magical allure”
Hawaii, also known as the “Aloha State” is located North of the Pacific Ocean and is known for its beautiful views, lush environment, and most of all, for its traditional dance, the Hula dance. The misconception that I have, along with many other people, is that this dance mainly involves moving your arms and hips from side to side in a peaceful manner. To me, hula dancing is being performed during a luau with instrumental calming music and the dancers are swaying to the beat. In other forms, it can also be very fast paced with the dancers moving their hips in a very quick motion. When I think of Hula dancers in Hawaii I envision that the people performing the dance are happy because it is a celebration of their culture and history. People often forget the importance of hula dancing because tourism and popular culture, therefore it is not appreciated in the form that it should be. Thesis: This essay will look at the cultural importance of the hula dance by evaluating all of its history, variety, and presentation forms.
Tap dance is a form of dance, which is by tapping your shoes and hitting the
