Human Development Essay Human development is an essential aspect in early childhood education. This essay is going to discuss about three human development theorists, Urie Bronfenbrenner, John Bowlby and Mary Ainsworth’s theories. Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems theory, Bowlby’s Attachment theory, Stages of attachment and the study Harlow’s Monkeys and Ainsworth’s “Strange Situation” research and three types of attachments that are Secure Attachment, Insecure Ambivalent/Resistant and Insecure Avoidant, which are all concerned with socio-cultural theory, will be analysed. Bronfenbrenner (Sigelman & Rider, 2014) created an ecological system model which illustrates both direct and indirect influences (these influences are bi-directional) in an individual’s growing environment. This ecological system consists of five systems which are all having an individual as their same centre and gradually extend from this individual to the last and biggest system, including minute but immediate impacts like a bee in the garden that stung this individual and macroscopical but subtle impacts like the global warming. Meanwhile, they are inclusive, as Te Whariki, the New Zealand Early Childhood Curriculum, describes it as “a set of nested Russian dolls” (The Ministry of Education, 1996, page.19), which means these systems are one contains another. Urie Bronfenbrenner presented his theory of ecological systems in 1979. In his theory, Bronfenbrenner claims that there are four systems that work in concert with one another to affect the behavior of an individual (Lobb, 2016). The four systems that Bronfenbrenner posed were the microsystem, relatable to one’s home, the mesosystem, considered one’s home and school, the exosystem, which are organizations outside of school, and the macrosystem, which involves the government. While the fourth system is not quite present in Craig’s life, the other three are readily recognizable.

Bronfenbrenner argued that to understand human development, the environment in which the person belongs must be understood (Bronfenbrenner, U.1979). The Ecological Systems model concentrically depicts how a person’s development is influenced by their wider environment. In the original model there were four ecological levels in the system, however in 1979 Bronfenbrenner added an additional fifth level (Bronfenbrenner, U. 1994). With the developing person in the centre, the five progressive levels of environment include the microsystem, mesosystem, exosystem, marcosystem and the chronosystem.

The attachment theory is one of the common theories in the specification of child development and growth in the world. Indeed, several influencing factors are concerned with the generation and establishment of the relationship that exists between parents and their children in the society. According to psychological understandings and studies in the world, there is a common feature of child growth and development that can be developed within the parameters of assumption and specification. For instance, it becomes very possible to have children growing and developing within the parameters and precepts set by their parents or caregivers. The attitudes and treatments from the caregiver appear to have innate influence on the general growth and development of the child (Sigelman & Rider, 2011).
