Lord of the Flies by William Golding is about a group of boys. During an unnamed time of war, a plane carrying a group of these boys is shot down over an Island. The pilot and all of the adults on the plane are killed, leaving the boys to find themselves deserted on an uninhabited island, where they learn to survive. During the book the author, William Golding implies that human nature strives to create a society but will fail due to poor leadership when fear intrudes on the society. In the beginning of the book William Golding implies that human nature will try to create a society. Piggy happens to find and shows Ralph how to use the conch. As Piggy picks up the conch he says “ ‘Ralph!’ Ralph looked up. ‘We can use this to call the others. Have a meeting. They’ll come when they hear us.’”(16). Ralph and Piggy want to find others instead of being by themselves because it is Human Nature’s instinct to need others to create a society. During the meeting they had thought it was best to elect a leader. After Ralph had gotten the boys to calm down, he said “ ‘Seems we ought to elect a chief’...’I ought to be chief’ said Jack with simple arrogance, ‘because I'm chapter chorister and head boy I can sing a C sharp’...’Let's have a vote’”(22). Most successful societies have a Leader, which is why the boys elect power in their ‘civilization’.
