In William Golding’s novel “Lord of the Flies” we have several characters representing one of the sides of human nature.

In the novel Jack represents the dark, savage side of human nature.
The rules the boys have made are not important to him, he doesn't care about them at all. When Ralph argues the importance of rules, Jack shouts, “Bollocks to the rules!” (91). He makes the choir boys suffer in their choir suits in the heat. In a civilized world we wear clothes, in the book Jack wears less and less clothing throughout the story. At the end of Chapter 8 he walks around naked just with a belt to keep his knife. First he couldn’t kill a pig , but after he kills his first pig he’s happy about the hunting and that’s all he can think of. He even shows off about how he killed the pig when he chants, “Kill the pig, Cut her throat, Spill her blood.” (68). There are several places in the book where Jack is being savage, for example: he shows that he doesn’t care about the littluns and wants to leave them behind when he says, “Sucks to the littluns.” (101). Jack needs a fire too but he had Piggy’s glasses when they make a fire in the beginning of the story, he doesn’t have Piggy’s glasses now so he attacks Ralph’s camp and steals Piggy’s glasses even though he knows Piggy is blind without them. He wanted to kill Ralph and that’s what savage people do.
