When Franklin D. Roosevelt’s administration was tasked with fixing the issues of the Great Depression the first step they took was creating programs to assist those in need. Although his programs pulled the United States out of the Great Depression they would prove to be a Pandora’s Box. Once the country was out of the depression these relief programs remained even when they were not needed. These programs would drain money from the Government and eventually lead to the bulk of the economic issues faced in recent years. Although these programs had a time and a place they eventually caused more harm then they helped.

Amid the Great Depression, the role of the government altered enormously. Prior to the Depression hit, the government did close to nothing or nothing at all to assistance individuals monetarily. This was not seen as something the administration should do. With the Depression came an adjustment in this discernment. President Roosevelt's New Deal made government in charge of peopling from numerous points of view. Since its formation in 19581, it has pioneered in space science, yet is also renowned for its large budget. NASA has the highest budget of any space agency, $18.6 billion2 in 2015, the equivalent of every American paying $54 towards the agency3, meaning 0.14% of total GDP is spent on NASA3 . This money is spent on the ISS, sending astronauts, probes and satellites into space, astrophysics and planetary science research, maintaining and developing NASA’s space telescopes (the Wide Field Infrared Survey telescope searching for dark energy and exoplanets, the James Webb Space Telescope and the Hubble Space Telescope) and developing spacecraft2. Space exploration is an incredibly expensive process with one shuttle launch costing $450 million4 however NASA’s colossal budget benefits the USA greatly; the agency employs 18,000 people5 as astronauts, engineers, scientists and teachers and G. Scott Hubbard, former director of the NASA Ames Research Center estimates that every dollar spent on NASA returns $8 to the economy6.While this figure is an estimate, it demonstrates NASA’s worth and capacity for money making. Banks that were destroyed during the Great Depression were saved by these great men. “Some banks could not be saved but the great majority of them, either through their own resources or with government aid have been restored to complete public confidence.” (Text 3, Lines 9-10). The economy is falling, people are starving and many are forced to become homeless. The Great Depression took it's toll on the United States in 1929 when Herbert Hoover was president. Herbert Hoover served from 1929-1933. After he was president, FDR (Franklin Delano Roosevelt) was elected president. He would serve from 1933 all the way to 1945. One of the big issues during the Great Depression was the banks. A big part of the population rushed to the banks trying to take out all of their money, they felt it was safer to have it all with them in cash. In 1933, Roosevelt quickly released a program called the New Deal. The New Deal was a series of projects. Roosevelt also held a “Fireside Chat” where he would declare a 4 day banking holiday. Before, those crazy enough to refuse the impossible frolicked through isolation, embalming a series of questions to persuade an explanation. Those explanations were planted, creating branches of science and technology such as biology, physics, chemistry and earth science. Later, blossoming into discoveries including: cancer diagnostic tests (Andraka), insulin pumps (Kamen), genomic research (Venter), lazy toggle (Shi), foursquare (Crowley), quantum systems (Wineland), predictive algorithms (Goiser), iRobot (Greiner) and many more. Today, more discoveries appear by the second, challenging our creativity to manipulate basic concepts. Which creates major opportunities to use those concepts to improve everyday life and a better tomorrow.

We as a human race are mentally programed to explore the unknown whether it is sneaking out into the woods behind your house as a child or going up into the depths of space. Curiosity is what allows us to think outside the box, and when we expand out of our comfort zones we discover things that help advance our race as a whole. There was once a time when space exploration was just a science fictional thought – humans were never expected to pass through Earth’s atmosphere. It all began during the Cold War, when different counties began competing with each other. The race resulted in numerous satellite launchings and the mission that brought man onto the moon; Apollo 11. This inspired so many in the rising generation to pursue careers in science

On the other end of the political spectrum, there are those who are against ending the DACA program like House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of California. In a written statement, Pelosi said, “President Trump’s decision to end DACA should break the hearts and offend the morals of all who believe in justice and human dignity” (Rubin). She went on to call it a “cruel act of political cowardice” that would be a “stunning blow to the bright young DREAMers and to everyone who cherishes the American Dream” (Rubin). Pelosi would also like fellow Democrats to join together to pass legislation to protect the DREAMers from the cruelty of being deported and the devastation of being separated from their families. Instead of being exclusively for the super-rich, the average everyday citizen could take a short trip to space for only a week’s pay. The massive tax increase and beginning of the Social Security program and the 1935 Revenue Act both took money out of the economy, businesses continued to fail and unemployment rose. Scalinge, in his article: Revisiting The Great Depression’s “The Great Depression provided the pretext for repudiating sound money, empowering secretive international financial elites, establishing a federal government stranglehold on agriculture, and in general imposing a regime of industry controls that mirrored the so-called “reforms” of facist and socialist regimes.” (38) It wasn’t until World War II began that the spending brought America out of the Great Depression.

In that context it is a fact that space is a place that is full of much potential. The discoveries of the future will be made in the space. It may be some new element or a new way of tapping the energy. Space is a place that is indeed promising and full of much promise. In that context it is vital that the United States of America invest more money in space exploration by dedicating more funds to NASA in the space budget. For instance, it is a theoretical reality that it is possible to travel faster than light. Money needs to be invested in new technologies that explore

Throughout the course of history, scientific discoveries have led to the birth of new knowledge. Humanity’s increase in knowledge has helped to achieve new heights of understanding in a variety of fields such as medicine, nuclear power, and nuclear weapons. While some of these achievements in science can generate much prosperity, some technology has created significant amounts of controversy. The Honors 2400 class entitled The Chernobyl Incident has granted me over the course of the semester the opportunity to analyze these scenarios and understand the challenging questions that are associated with the pursuit of knowledge. From many examples discussed in class, I understand the importance of limiting knowledge, the discoveries that humanity should or should not pursue, how individuals pursue confined questions, and who is ultimately responsible for approving or disapproving of these scientific questions.
