Human Trafficking In Slavery

Human trafficking is as described by Wikipedia as the illegal trade in humans for the use of sexual exploitation or forced labor.

Pocahontas’ story has been changed throughout history. Her story has been subverted because people wanted to make it more interesting so that they could make more money and fame of off it. Townsend explains the choices that Pocahontas and her father made as well as the trajectory of her life by using other people’s accounts of her and how they perceived her. There were no documents recorded from Pocahontas.

Scout and Jeremy “Jem” Finch start out as a young, pesky, childish brother and sister, although being motherless, relying on their coherent father, Atticus, who works as a lawyer. Although, Jem’s behaviour changes towards his younger sister, due to events that occur in Maycomb, it’s for the better as he reveals his more vulnerable side to Scout. This shapes his character as he outgrows his childish relationship, and becomes closer with Scout. Although slavery may have legally ended in 1865 with the end of the Civil War, it continues to be a problem worldwide today. “The UN International Labor Organization (ILO) calculates the minimum number of people in forced labor at 12.3 million, while research by Free the Slaves, a non-governmental organization (NGO) based in the United Sates, puts the number at 27 million.” Even so, there are many similarities between the Trans-Atlantic slave trade and human trafficking today.

Human trafficking is defined, legally, as all acts involved in “the recruitment, abduction, transport, harboring, transfer, sale or receipt of persons, within national or across international borders, through force, coercion, fraud or deception, to place persons in situations of slavery or slavery-like conditions, forced labor or services, such as forced prostitution or sexual services, domestic servitude, bonded sweatshop labor, or other debt bondage” (Harris, 2012); but human trafficking is more commonly known as the trade of humans, most commonly for the purpose of sexual slavery, forced labor, or modern day slavery.

Human Trafficking is the illegal buying and selling of people to either become domestic workers or forced into illegal prostitution. It is also a violation of basic human rights, because the individual has no personal freedom. Women and children are the primary targets for this industry and typically the victims are forced into illegal slave trade. Human trafficking is a violation of human rights and it is among one of the most horrendous crimes against humanity, forced labor and forced prostitution is the common uses for these people that were lured in by traffickers.

Human trafficking is the modernized version of slavery that involves force, fraud, and/or a type of labor in a sexual act. The United States government defines it to be “In which a sex act is forced in which the person induced has not yet been attained eighteen years of age” (National Institute of Justice). Human trafficking is a threat to all nations and promotes breakdown of families and can support organized crime. Trafficking can occur everywhere. Human trafficking and human smuggling are related to one another, but different crimes. The difference between smuggling and trafficking is that smuggling is the illegal movement of someone across a border while trafficking is the illegal exploitation of a person.

Human trafficking can take many forms, as well as many victims. One form of trafficking is slavery. Slavery is having a worker who is unpaid and who works by force using coercion, fraud or threat of bodily harm. “According to the United Nations, there are between 27 and 30 million modern-day slaves in the world (Jesionka, “Human Trafficking: The Myths and the Realities”).” “By 1860, the nation’s black population had jumped from 400,000 to 4.4 million, of which 3.9 million were slaves.(Henry Louis Gates).” That means there are nearly ten times more slaves today than there were in the late 1800’s.

Many believe that slavery ended years ago. However, a modern form of slavery has ruined the lives of thousands of people from around the world and continues to do so. It is referred to as human trafficking. Human trafficking is “the movement of persons for the purpose of exploitation.” People can be sold into sex slavery, or forced to do hard labor. They are taken, oppressed and treated as an object. Even though slavery was abolished in the United States in the 19th century, exploitation, dehumanization, and forced labor continued and still exists today. The history and origin of slavery impacts the current issue of slave trading and human trafficking in America because it is still an existing problem

Many people think slavery in the USA is over, ever since the passage of the 13th amendment freed the African slaves brought into this country against their will. But, in fact, human trafficking, or bringing people into the country for the sole purpose of exploitation is still happening today.

Slavery is a modern, pervasive problem. Human trafficking has been found in every state in America (humantrafficking.org). It seems that most Americans likely live within a comfortable drive of someone who is being exploited through human trafficking. There is a growing trend in human trafficking toward sexual exploitation (Bennetts, 2011). The Information Age has helped to create new opportunities for sex trafficking to flourish.

Human trafficking refers to the movement of persons across borders for forced labor, sexual exploitation or other illicit activities. Sex trafficking is the most lucrative sector of human trafficking America, Southeast Asia, East Asia, Eastern Europe, and Russia. The global political economy, political corruption, human rights, gender and ethnic stratification, and migration are all related to human trafficking.

Human trafficking is modern-day slavery and involves the use of force, fraud, or coercion to obtain some type of labor or commercial sex act (Homeland).

More specifically then human trafficking, there is child trafficking. Child trafficking is today’s version of slavery that involves transferring a child for the purpose of abuse or illegal activities. According to the U.S. Department of State, “Child/Human Trafficking is one of the fastest growing crimes in the world and is the world’s second largest criminal enterprise, after drugs. Child trafficking happens in every single country, including the United States. When people think of trafficking of people, most think of women, but children are also being sold as slaves all across the world. Children who are most likely to become victims are those who come from low income homes, have limited access to education and are
