In subjects, such as the arts and literature, the involvement of religion was reduced. There was more focus on humans and life. This focus on humans is called Humanism. Humanism is the study of human behavior, abilities, and culture. In Document A, there are two paintings, one which was drawn during the Renaissance and one was drawn during the Middle Ages. The Mona Lisa, which was done by Leonardo da Vinci in the early 1500’s, portrays a beautiful woman. The painting drawn by Duccio di Buoninsegna in the late 1200’s is of a man and a child. The artwork which was done during the Middle Ages is very religious, as the two people are wearing halos. Not only is it religious, but it is also very plain. The image is 2-dimensional and very flat. There is hardly any creativity, nor any beautiful features. The painting from the Renaissance, on the other hand, depicts a beautiful woman with a nature-filled background. This shows how life was viewed as during the Renaissance. During the Middle Ages, life was poor and the afterlife was good. During the Renaissance, not only was the afterlife a “safe haven’, but life itself was also appreciable. “What a piece of work is a man! How noble in reason! How infinite in faculty! Arguably the greatest and longest impacting movement brought about by the forward thinkers of the Renaissance was humanism. Humanism was a cultural and intellectual movement that emphasized the human potential to attain excellence through direct study of the literature, art, and civilization of the classical Greek and Roman societies (Merriam-Webster). The scholars and believers in humanism sought to change the course of society away from the narrow pedantry of medieval scholasticism and utilitarianism. Humanism was a basic desire for every citizen to be able to speak with eloquence and read and write with clarity, so that common citizens were capable of engaging in the civic life of their communities (Gray). The movement also emphasized the value of a human being as well as the importance of rational thought rather than blind faith in spiritualism or superstition. It also pushed people to explore human desires and pleasures while also enriching their minds. The influential nature of humanism was far reaching and most notable for its effects on Renaissance art, literature, and philosophy.

In the School of Athens there is a large group of people which are many famous mathematicians and philosophers and they are all pictured in a very large room. With all these philosophers and mathematicians and scientists it is shown that they are all sharing ideas and thoughts. This show humanism during this time because it is some of the greatest minds associated with humanism. Philosophers study philosophy which is the study of reality and real things. The mathematicians and scientists also only deal with stuff that is on Earth. None of the people pictured deal with anything not on Earth and they are all sharing information with each other. This shows humanism because all these people are totally against the Church’s beliefs and they believe that man is greater than the study of the spiritual

The Renaissance was a period of great cultural and technological changes that swept Europe from the end of the 13th century. It was integral in developing Europe into a powerhouse. Although, each part of Europe was subjected to different changes, there were two primary renaissances, which were most notable. They were the Italian and the Northern renaissance. Both of these renaissances had a profound impact on Europe. But they also had some typical differences among them and each was unique in its own way.

Humanism was a huge part of the renaissance period. They based everything around humanism and inquiring it in there everyday things. At the beginning of the Italian Renaissance, Italy was split into city-states, however knowledge was always on the brim of expanding and in a few years, Italian intellect would be exponentially larger. The start of this growth actually begins in Germany, 1439, Johannes Gutenburg, produces the first printing press, forever changing the literary industry by making it easier to print more copies and allowing manuscripts to be available to the public.

In conclusion, it is inferential that the Renaissance period gave a greater measure of attention to human growth with proper significance to human action. More importantly, the human person was to take an active role in making everything worth it and not living in contemplation. In that dictum, the emphasis was on human positive interaction to make sure that people live harmoniously not only with one another but also for one another. Therefore, the ideals and goals of humanism in the renaissance period sought to make the world a better place for the human
