The Renaissance was a time of rebirth and progress in Europe. It started in Italy around the thirteenth century and spread continuously toward the north and west of Europe for the following two centuries It was a period of tremendous development in learning and culture.
Through contacts with the Arab world, the western world was rediscovering some missing established compositions of the Greeks and Romans.
Islamic scholars had preserved many of the ancient writing, and the European scholars retranslated them from the Arabic and shared them across Europe.

Humanism is the study of human behavior, abilities, and culture. In Document A, there are two paintings, one which was drawn during the Renaissance and one was drawn during the Middle Ages. The Mona Lisa, which was done by Leonardo da Vinci in the early 1500’s, portrays a beautiful woman. The painting drawn by Duccio di Buoninsegna in the late 1200’s is of a man and a child. The artwork which was done during the Middle Ages is very religious, as the two people are wearing halos. Not only is it religious, but it is also very plain. The image is 2-dimensional and very flat. There is hardly any creativity, nor any beautiful features. The painting from the Renaissance, on the other hand, depicts a beautiful woman with a nature-filled background. This shows how life was viewed as during the Renaissance. During the Middle Ages, life was poor and the afterlife was good. During the Renaissance, not only was the afterlife a “safe haven’, but life itself was also appreciable. “What a piece of work is a man! How noble in reason! How infinite in faculty! Arguably the greatest and longest impacting movement brought about by the forward thinkers of the Renaissance was humanism. Humanism was a cultural and intellectual movement that emphasized the human potential to attain excellence through direct study of the literature, art, and civilization of the classical Greek and Roman societies (Merriam-Webster). The scholars and believers in humanism sought to change the course of society away from the narrow pedantry of medieval scholasticism and utilitarianism. Humanism was a basic desire for every citizen to be able to speak with eloquence and read and write with clarity, so that common citizens were capable of engaging in the civic life of their communities (Gray). The movement also emphasized the value of a human being as well as the importance of rational thought rather than blind faith in spiritualism or superstition. It also pushed people to explore human desires and pleasures while also enriching their minds. The influential nature of humanism was far reaching and most notable for its effects on Renaissance art, literature, and philosophy.
In the School of Athens there is a large group of people which are many famous mathematicians and philosophers and they are all pictured in a very large room. With all these philosophers and mathematicians and scientists it is shown that they are all sharing ideas and thoughts. This show humanism during this time because it is some of the greatest minds associated with humanism. Philosophers study philosophy which is the study of reality and real things. The mathematicians and scientists also only deal with stuff that is on Earth. None of the people pictured deal with anything not on Earth and they are all sharing information with each other.
