We live in an age in which we are granted with seemingly limitless power, technology and resources; the golden age of the technological era. Only, we’re not. The global population is at an all time high, and only rising as quickly as the mercury in the thermometer on my window (which, needless to say, is incredibly fast) whilst food security is dwindling, the threat level is red, people. Red! Of course, the “easiest” solution to this would be a Hunger Games-esque battle royal for the working class, and a gruesome spectator event for fat-cats and their corporate societies. But, fortunately, corporate lust for blood hasn’t yet extended to the blood of man, just the blood of workers; meaning we’ll instead turn to science to solve the problem for
In 1983, Raymond Carver introduced his short story “Cathedral” to the public. The first-person narrative takes place within the narrator’s home, where his wife is waiting upon the arrival of her blind friend Robert. The narrator, however, becomes more concerned about how Robert’s visit will affect him rather than enjoy the situation. Once Robert arrives, the narrator tries to understand the blind man, but he is unaware of what tasks Robert is capable of performing due to the narrator’s inability to “see”. In time, Robert shows the narrator the difference between looking and seeing through illustrations of a cathedral, drawn by the narrator with his eyes closed. “Cathedral’s” narrator exposes readers to anti-heroic views
“Hey guys! This is the last communication you shall receive from me. I now walk out to live amongst the wild. Take care, it was great knowing you” (Qtd. In Krakauer 69). After graduating from Emory University, Christopher McCandless abandoned everything, gave his entire savings account to charity, and then hitchhiked to Alaska to live in the wild. In the novel, Into the Wild, Was McCandless justified in shunning society? McCandless was justified in shunning society because he simply wanted to find himself and be independent without any distractions from his friends or family.
Even in the most violent dystopian times, there is a way for love and trust to emerge. Reading the Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, many examples of love and trust are shown during Panemś most violent entertainment games. Panem, is the futuristic United States made up of 12 districts and the Capitol. The Hunger Games are when two tributes, a male and a female between the ages of 12 and 18, are chosen from each district to ¨play¨ in a battle to the death. The last tribute that stands is crowned victor of the games. Katniss and Peeta are the tribute of District 12 since they were picked for the reaping. During the Games theyŕe referred as the ¨star-crossed lovers΅. Even during games of blood and killing you can find love within people you can
The Hunger Games written by Suzanne Collins delineates that there are times when people believe that all hope is lost but only those who are strong will persevere through their darkest moments. Suzanne Collins portrays the theme throughout the novel with the main protagonist, Katniss Everdeen, as she struggles to endure her daily life and the annual Hunger Games. Collins displays the prodigious amount of persistence of Katniss Everdeen and her comrade, Peeta Mellark, which allows them to survive throughout the Hunger Games.
In the book “The Catcher in the Rye” by J.D. Salinger, the story describes Holden Caulfield as a mystery man that a rReader would have to find clues to discover the hidden truth behind him. Holden is afraid to go into the adult world and he wishes he can stay in his childhood world, because Holden wants to avoid the adults world phoniness and it's painful for holden to grow up; knowing thats he’s been through so much as a boy and how he has heard so many lies growing up.
I think that the whole concept of the Games is a way to make us think about appearances and reality. The event is televised for the whole world to see, but the Capitol is able to control what the population is able to see, they only show the 'entertaining' parts of the horrible game that they are putting innocent teenagers through. During the parade, the tributes are expected to show off beautiful outfits to appeal to the sponsors, that don't even know what the tributes are able to do. The costumes are supposed to trump the actual abilities, up to a certain point of course. The Capitol has been trying to make the Hunger Games look like a fun televised game show, but they really can destroy and scar the winners for life, and all the other 23 (or 22) tributes die in the arena. The Hunger Games are based on violence and murder. The kids are literally thrown into an arena to kill each other, but the Capitol manipulates this and shows the population another
Being an athletes is one of the best-paid jobs on Earth. Being that they are paid so much the cost for the consumer is very high. The prices of tickets and sports memorabilia have been steadily rising over the years. The average ticket prices for the NHL, MLB, NBA and NFL all rose 5% to 10% this year, according to Jon Greenberg, executive editor of Team Marketing Report. (Mihoces).
“This fall I think you’re riding ride--it’s a special kind of fall, a horrible kind. The man falling isn’t permitted to feel or hear himself hit bottom. He just keeps falling and falling. The whole arrangement’s designed for men who, at some time other in the lives, we're looking something their own environment couldn’t supply them with. Or they thought their own environment couldn’t supply them with. So they gave looking. They gave it up before they really even got started.” Antonelli said to Holden. Kicked out of 5 school, Holden faces his struggle with commitment in terms of holding things close to him when he can’t hold himself together. The environment around Holden wasn’t something he fit into easily because we get the sense that he couldn’t find something he had a deep interest in other than getting into trouble and alcohol. He judges other people by what they wear, and how they say things, but this hypocrisy surely didn't get him
The contents inside the paradigmatic meatpacking factory is so inhumane and barbaric that no designation, appellation, or locution juxtaposes with the conditions and experiences that meatpackers are put through on a daily basis. Foremost the first safety hazard on the long list of employment safety deficiencies is worker proximity. Workers wielding butcher knives and hooks are literally feet from each other meanwhile 450 pound bloody pieces of beef are also being flung directly at meatpackers via trolley swing. The kill floor as its name insinuates is where hundred of steers sadly go belly up in the most gruesome way. About every ten second a worker transfixes a cow in a main channel of blood to give them a “merciful” death. There is also a
I wrote about the Radford Hunger Games because its famous and I guarantee that everyone has heard of it. I chose pamphlet because I thought that pamphlet would fit best into my topic, it is also easy to hand out and you can be very secret handing, because if a teacher finds out they are most likely to shut it down. I am trying to subvert the school and parents. One of persuasive techniques I used were heroes. Everyone has heroes and people look up to their heroes, so people want to achieve what their heroes have achieved. We need heroes because they reveal our missing qualities, like when were young they educate us about rights and wrongs. Also, they pick us up when we are down our heroes are likely to inspire us to overcome whatever is making
You ran away from the mutts, you didn't dare to turn back because you knew if you did, they would catch up with you, you saw a tree in front of you, it was your only hope at the moment, if you continued running they would chase you until you tired out. You managed to quickly scale the tree. You sat on the tree branch, leaving you in the cold, damp forest with tall dark silhouettes watching over your every move or mistake. You began to sob, you absolutely hated being here, you hated every single moment you spent and you knew that the memories from these Games would haunt you more than the first Games you went into but you just couldn't understand how the Careers in the past games just willingly volunteered to be in these damn games. You hated
"Life’s just not fair. Why should I eat this food? Why is my family so poor? Why do I have to listen to my parents? Everything is horrible in my life!" Chances are, everyone has thought of at least one of these sayings before. Every day, there are complaints slurred out like rabbit reproductions. However, these complaints are minuscule compared to the amount of suffering in The Hunger Games. Set in a post-apocalyptic North America now called Panem, there are 12 districts each responsible for its assigned production and a tyrannical government city called the Capitol. Since the 75 years of the 13 district’s failed rebellion against the Capitol, there has a been a Hunger Games every year. The Hunger Games was an annual event in where 24

More times then not if you participate in a contest, you will probably get a prize of some sort. Which I think is just teaching kids that even if they lose they still get something, and I believe that kids shouldn't be taught that. What I mean is it's a nice concept, if you want to make everyone feel good. I believe that participation trophies are nice, but what do they really help, making people feel better about themself? Even when i was younger if you got an A on your test you got a sticker, and if you failed you still got a sticker.
Why spend money that is really needed for other things? Why live uncomfortably? Why be trapped in this hole called a home that belongs to another person? Why not live free and peacefully? When a person rents he or she usually throws away money that could be used to purchase something that belongs to them. Money is not easy to come by so why pay out hundreds toward something that is not benefit to the person paying it out. There is no good explanation for making a decision like this. The best option in a situation like this is to buy a house. Buying a house is a better option than renting an apartment.
