South Florida is the southernmost part of the state of Florida and is one of three (3) commonly used “directional” regions, the others being central and north Florida. South Florida includes the densely populated areas of Miami, Florida Keys, among others. Florida and by extension the United States, have experienced hurricanes dating back to 1900 with Hurricane Galveston and has recorded a myriad of devastating hurricanes in its history. Hurricanes are not a new phenomenon to South Florida, with the first devastation occurring in September 1919 killing at least eight hundred (800) people in Key West. The most recent record was that of Hurricane Andrew in 1992, which was responsible for twenty-three (23) deaths in the United States and $25 billion in damages in South Florida. Despite South Florida’s historical trend, the region has not experienced a major storm in ten (10) years and the community may be ill prepared to coordinate efforts against a natural disaster.

4 to the Model of Risk Perception – Risk Reduction Behavior process as postulated by Bennett and Murphy (1997), efficient and effective disaster preparedness is dependent on risk perception, self – efficacy and the social environment (attitudes and subjective norms). Most often people are of the opinion that they are not at risk for disasters placing themselves and their families in imminent danger.
This project will outline the design of an intervention for hurricane preparedness in the City of North Miami with all components of this intervention based on behavioral theories to motivate change. The City of North Miami has been fortunate enough not to have withstood a hurricane or any natural disaster that has caused significant loss of lives, injury and damage to properties. However, with the unpredictable nature of hurricanes, there has to be an active plan to get citizens aware of their risks, knowledgeable about preparedness and what to do in such
When most people think the of the Gulf of Mexico, the thought of surf probably never crosses their mind. However, the gulf is capable of producing quality surf more than you would think. From hurricanes to cold fronts, the gulf can receive waves from various weather patterns.
On September 21 1938 an enormous hurricane hit the east coast, RI and Long island was greatly impacted. This storm was very powerful due to various conditions. One of them was the weather, between the waves, winds, and floods the storm was very deadly. Some other conditions contributed to the destruction, but one in particular put the nailin the coffin, human error. The impact that this hurricane caused was trmendous it destroyed many people's lives.
According to “Florida preparing for Category 5 Hurricane Irma” by Adam Jeffrey, it states really how bad a category 5 hurricane is. It states that you have to shop for water, get gasoline, buy generators, evacuate, put shutters up, and lots of other important stuff. It also states that hospitals are open for people in need. Hurricanes can also be labeled catastrophic. As stated in “Florida preparing for Category 5 Hurricane Irma” it says “While Texas struggles to recover from Hurricane Harvey, which devastated much of its southern coastline just a week ago.”
Unfortunately, the challenges that result from hurricanes are multifaceted. When large bodies of water surround the area of impact, flooding becomes an additional cause for concern. For the city of New Orleans, the primary goal was to prevent these floodwaters from breaching people's homes. Such a task was, by no means, easy. The storm surge that resulted from Katrina's wrath was 20 ft high. Instead of the expected outcome of holding back floodwaters, many of the levees failed miserably. With nothing to stop the raging waters, much of the city was left vulnerable to the flood and was consequently
Hurricane Irma’s destruction varied from region to region in several different aspects, such as the wind, rain, and storm surge. The enormous destruction that Irma caused in the Caribbean on the islands like Barbuda and Sint Maarten was unbelievable. Several unanticipated consequences came from Irma’s sudden decrease in speed. The biggest unanticipated consequence to that would have to be the constant damage to the Keys and the metropolitan Miami areas due to the constant downpour of rain. The degree of destruction in the Florida Keys was worse than expected based on prior storms. The flooding was especially bad in greater Miami. Miami endured days of rain from Irma the whole time she was approaching and making that slow turn to head up Florida.
Each year Hurricanes hit South Florida with devastating force. Even though Charlotte County has some policies in place to help deal with the devastation that comes with these disasters, I feel that there is a way that their preparations/reactions to these storms can be improved.
Florida has no power, the days after the Hurricane. The fourth day, people in Florida faced super hot days and 99% of power customers have no electricity. You have to what three hours at any gas station, while people stand in line for hours just to buy a fruit juice at a Lowe's store. about 1,000 people from Texas are working in central Florida to try and help 100,000 residents. People are wanting to get service in three days, but at this rate they won’t get service for another week. recovery is only getting started, and some areas remain flooded. Florida Keys as frustrated evacuees emerge from shelters ready to go home.
The paramount goal of disaster management activities is to reduce, as much as possible, the degree to which a community’s condition is worsened by a disaster relative to its pre-disaster condition. If a disaster strikes it important to know what to do or were to find the information if do not know. First responders who are well-prepared will have the peace of mind to focus on the task at hand if well prepared and trained. First responders can also serve as role models for other members of the community, leading by example to encourage preparedness. First responders can encourage their communities to make family plans and to be informed about the types of emergencies and disasters. Law enforcement should look to do training such as the Emergency Management Institute (EMI) which offers self-paced courses free-of-charge courses [Department of Homeland Security. (2017)]. Planning and being prepared for a terrorist attack provides the structure and mechanisms for national level policy and operational coordination and provides emergency managers, the understanding, the knowledge, and the steps to prepare, counter and respond to a terrorist attack. It more importantly helps to instill confidence and cohesion within
Natural disasters are terrible things that have been happening more often in America. One of these disasters is a hurricane. Hurricanes are severe storms with rain and wind that reach up to a category five. A hurricane that recently hit the southern U.S. and many other countries was Hurricane Irma. At one point, Irma was a category five. This hurricane was a horrendous hurricane that took many lives. Unfortunately, the physical destruction was devastating, leaving many people without their homes, without power, and with trees down. Fortunately, a majority of the people affected, had their lives spared. As you can see, hurricanes are very dangerous and can be deadly.
perception), face to face scripted presentations on how to prepare for a hurricane and what to do when one is imminent (skills/self-efficacy). The final strategy of providing brochures with links to videos made by the City of North Miami and other information resources will address trying to increase knowledge. Table 2 will provide an overview of the theory-based methods and practical applications that will be used to address each
There is only so much that government agencies can do to educate the public, and there comes a point where society must take ownership for their own emergency preparedness. However, it has been found that these public education initiatives have been surprisingly effective at encouraging people to prepare for disaster. FEMA has found that an awareness of vulnerabilities to natural disasters motivates people to prepare. People need to feel as though they themselves can be adversely affected by a disaster, and that disasters are not merely events which happen elsewhere. More importantly, FEMA has found that messaging should be targeted to specific hazards, since “all-hazard messaging may dilute critical differences in preparedness and response protocols.”
The survey questions I chose were analyzed to investigate how individuals perceptions of preparedness were influenced by the amount and types of emergency preparedness education they self reported as having participated in. I used quantitative analysis of quantitative data to create comparative charts of the survey results.
Thesis statement:We must take notice and learn about the hurricane process so that we are able to
According to the article, “Hurricane strikes – many hurt” the worst storm called Hurricane Irene happened in southeastern part of Florida. As a result of storm city lost its electricity and water supply. Also, flooding caused by the storm , left a lot of people without their homes or companies. Finally, destruction of thousands acres of crops just increased the catastrophe and. Storm Irene caused destruction on almost everything In the city and harmed several people.
The paper applied a sample of Rio Grande Valley, Texas and contributed to the hypothetical scenario experiments of evacuation decision making behaviors. Giving the fact, since Baker (1991) provided a big picture in respect with the impact factors of hurricane evacuation decision, this topic has been repeatedly studied by at least 40 empirical studies, 20 hypothetical scenario studies and 10 review or meta-analysis studies. Beyond those efforts, current studies moved this research on either comprehensive model/theory examinations (e.g., Huang et al., 2017), or mixed/new method attempts (e.g., DeYoung et al., 2016), or test on specific impact factor(s)/behavior(s) (e.g., Maghelal et al., 2017). Even though it seems that the authors tried to
