I Am Proud Of The American Dream

I take pride that I live America, with my family and friends. I have developed a sense of patriotism especially after the terrorist attacks on September 11. As an immigrant to this country, I hold no grudge against anyone who is seeking to come here for a better life, however, there are certain things and rules that we need to understand when we make this country our home.

First, let's define "American Dream". "American Dream" is what you would consider a "perfect life." It can be full of happiness, money, love, food, cars, whatever you desire, everyone has a different opinion. One person’s American Dream may be totally different from someone else’s, that is what makes us all individuals. My American Dream would include a good job and lots of money, spare time for my family and I, and most importantly, healthiness.

For as long as I remember, my mother always talks about the importance of education. Her passion for education passed down to me.My parents leaving the comfort of their country for The American dream inspires me every day to achieve my dreams.

The American dream is the idea that success is available to all regardless of family background or social status. It is achieved through hard work, talent, and ambition. However, in The Mice of Men, the American dream is not possible. Steinbeck shows this through the actions of Curley’s wife as she represents women of that time. Curley’s wife is a very lonely person and not very hard working. She even antagonizes the men on the ranch because she thinks she can get away with it, which shows just how weak she is. According to Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men, the American dream is not possible and this is demonstrated through his use of the character Curley’s wife.

The American Dream is indefinable. There is no one set of words or characteristics that the entire population assigns directly to its definition. With the American population consisting of people of various races, ethnicities, ages, classes, and genders, it seems trivial to even attempt to attribute a single definition to the concept of the American Dream. It is this inability however, to be confined within one single meaning, that allows for the American Dream to govern the desires and goals of the large and diverse American population. And, regardless of all of the heterogeneity within society, the American Dream is generally a goal of all American peoples. In examining this idea, I began to think about the specific meanings attributed to the American Dream for different types of individuals. I broadly outlined the American Dream for myself, to represent the belief in hard work as a pathway to success and raising oneself in society. Consequently, this higher position in society allows for the possession of increased amounts of power. My definition however, neglects to take into account the certain other societal constructs that could possibly have a decisive role in how to both define and achieve the American Dream for the wide variety of people who pursue it.

American Dream: Noun, the ideals of freedom, equality, and opportunity traditionally held to be available to every American. That is the definition of the American dream according to Dictionary.com, but the American Dream is more than a definition, but a way of life for many. Millions of immigrants come to our country in search of this “American Dream” including my grandparents but more and more are disappointed. So does the American Dream exist? Has it ever existed or has it all been an illusion?

I have been a part of this great nation for 80 years. From the time I took my first breath as a baby to this exact moment of 1940. Over the years, I have traveled to experience and witness life changing events. Due to my past, I have gained a true sense of what it means to be an American. And believe me, America is something to be proud of.

America, the country where social and economic equality are supposedly attainable for one and all, is not always infallible. There have been many blunders along the way with racism and incompetence. Is the American Dream truly attainable for everyone? Picture the 1940’s America. A tight knit Japanese American family living on the west coast, is going about their business, making a living and trying to achieve their version of the American Dream. While the parents are immigrants from Japan, the children were all born in the U.S. The parents and older children have jobs and work hard to afford a nice suburban life, while the younger children go to school to learn to be good citizens. They go about their business, never bothering anyone and have adapted to the American lifestyle. As they are working to achieve their dreams, the world and devastation of war cut their dreams short, forcing them into devastating conditions and choices no one should have to make. Families are split apart and the Japanese Americans are now looked at as the enemy. The attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese and the signing of the Executive Order 9066 sent over 100,000 Japanese Americans to internment camps, many times tragically changing their definition of America and the American Dream. Being equal means that we all have that opportunity to succeed, it doesn 't mean that we all have the same things.
