In the movie “I Am Sam” directed by Jessie Nelson, one of the main characters Sam Dawson, is mentally handicapped. In the beginning of the movie, Sam has a baby girl with a homeless woman, who abandons him and the baby after leaving the hospital. Therefore, Sam is left on his own to raise his daughter Lucy. There was no question about Sam loving his daughter and raising her to the best of his ability, but once she reaches the age of seven, there are assumptions that Lucy has passed him in intelligence and she gets taken away from him. Throughout the rest of the movie, Sam influences many people who doubted him from the start and changes not only his life, but many others. In “I Am Sam”, whenever Sam is out of his comfort zone, or confused, there is a blue tint throughout the scene. For instance, there is a scene where one of Lucy’s friends is over, and there is a blue tint in their house. Although the house should be a normal and comfortable place for Sam, there is someone over who usually isn’t, and he feels out of his element. Jessie Nelson uses this blue tint throughout the movie to convey difficult situations and show the importance of them. Blue wasn’t the only colored that signified something, whereas the director used warm colors to signify good things, or good people. For instance, when Lucy paints a picture, and it shows her being the bigger person, as if she feels like she is taking care of him, rather than him taking care of her and being the bigger person/parent. The reason this is so important is because, not only is it signifying what she sees him as, but it is also an important turning point in the movie where Sam begins to be questioned as to whether or not he is capable of taking care of Lucy.
