about the story
I Am Sam is a powerful, emotional film about love, parenthood and the bonds of family. "I'm fascinated by what makes a family and how people create that in untraditional ways," says director and co-screenwriter Jessie Nelson. "I think all parents at times feel confused and overwhelmed. It is a common bond between every parent on the planet, whether you're disabled or not. Parents who are disabled provide a unique metaphor for how we're all trying to get through an incredibly challenging world and how we all ultimately need some type of support system."
Raising a child is never easy, but like everybody, Sam Dawson (Academy Award nominee Sean Penn) has learned to adapt. Sam and his daughter Lucy (Dakota Fanning) have gotten through the basics, though not always in the conventional way, with the help of Sam's tightly-knit group of friends. Though Lucy's life has never been what anyone would ever call "normal," it has always been animated with humor and full of love.
"Lucy and her dad go to IHOP on Wednesday, video night on Thursday, karaoke night on Friday," says Dakota Fanning, the 7-year old newcomer who plays Lucy Diamond. "They just have the best time together."
But when Lucy

I Am Sam is a touching movie that demonstrates, despite any impairment – anyone is capable of love. Sam Dawson, a forty-year-old man, has the mental capacity of a 7-year-old. The movie begins with Sam having a child with a homeless woman, whom abandons him shortly after they leave the hospital. His daughter, Lucy, becomes the love of his life. The movie is spent with Sam fighting for his rights to his daughter. In the end, love wins and Lucy is back where she belongs, with Sam. He proves to everyone that if you have the capacity to love, you have the ability to fight for it.
I chose the movie I am Sam to challenge my own opinion on how people with disabilities should be treated under certain circumstances. I am Sam is a movie about a mentally challenged man, named Sam, striving to raise his daughter, Lucy, alone. Diagnosed with Autism, Sam’s intellectual capacity cannot exceed the age of 7. As we watch Lucy grow up under Sam’s roof, we are able to see the love they have for each other. When Lucy reaches the age of 8, social workers see this as an issue, so they place Lucy in a temporary home while Sam goes to court to try to win Lucy back. Sam’s lawyer, Rita, took this “pro bono” case to impress her coworkers. At first, Rita doesn’t believe Sam is capable of raising Lucy along with the social workers who
Throughout the story My Brother Sam is Dead by James Lincoln Collier and Christopher Collier, the character Sam, shows significant change. In the beginning of the book, Sam continuously argues with his father about going to war. Sam wants to fight for the Patriots and make the colonies independent from Britain. His father, Life, is a strong Tory, and does not approve of his son fighting for the Patriots. Sam is stubborn and runs away to fight. But once Sam learns of the hardship his family goes through while he is away, he becomes more sympathetic and helpful. Sam is a dynamic character, because he changes from being stubborn and disrespectful to his father, to understanding and forgiving about the choices he made, and who they affected.

The difficulties faced today in society by those with serious intellectual disabilities are very large hurdles faced by many in today 's world. These disabilities along with the pressure to remain independent question how we deal with those intellectually challenged individuals. The film, I Am Sam details the struggle of Sam Dawson- a man living with mild intellectual disabilities- and his fight to maintain custody of his young daughter. This film details many different important psychological principles that are taught and studied in modern psychology. These principles are brought up and make us question the validity and extent of principles that are held sacred in the psychological world today.
I Am Sam is a touching film that incorporates psychology into modern day society into terms that the common person could empathize with. Sam Dawson, played by Sean Penn is a mentally challenged man raising his beloved daughter Lucy (Dakota Fanning) in the heart of Los Angeles. As a single father, Sam has support from many of his mentally challenged friends to raise Lucy. Sam works at the local Starbucks where his job is to bus the tables and clean up after customers. His neighbor Annie who experiences agoraphobia and will not leave her apartment, agrees to babysit and care for Lucy while teaching Sam the basics to parenting.
With all her suffering, Lucy was awakened to all the glories of living to which we remain unaware of so much of the time. Lucy also exhibits a sensible, mature understanding of her father. She realizes he left her alone during her terrifying and traumatizing treatments with a completely heartless and hateful physician only because of his own inability to deal with and accept the type of pain his own daughter was experiencing. Through these extraordinary events, the family, overwhelmed by shock and shame, abandoned Lucy emotionally.
Sam's self-concept is not distorted and he strongly believes that he is a stable adult, capable of raising his daughter. Constantly needing to defend his rights throughout the movie, Sam's self-concept becomes evident, and is clearly accurate. According to Sam, being a good parent
