The poem “Let America Be America Again” was a poem published in 1994 by poet, novelist, fiction writer, and playwright, Langston Hughes. Hughes wrote this poem because he feels that America does not live up to the expectations it is portrayed to be. The tone of this poem swings from angry and resentful to a little hope at the end. The poem isn’t just speaking on behalf of one group of people but all Americans. The poem says that there are many people who’ve come to America with hopes and dreams but they are getting let down. Also he emphasizes how the economic disparity between the rich and poor is getting worse because of the government. America is supposed to be the place where Americans are able to achieve greatness. America is supposed to be place where it does not matter origins or past experiences. America is suppose to offer everyone an equal opportunity to achieve their potential. For most American citizens, the American dream of attending college and acquiring a comfortable job is very likely and achievable. However, the truth is that the opportunity and accessibility to the American Dream is not provided equally to all culturally different Americans.

In “I Hear America Singing”, America sounds like a dream. It seems like everyone is singing happily together. The poem says, “I hear America, the varied carols I hear.” That quote means they are all singing in harmony and peace. “I Hear America Singing” says, “The day what belongs to the day-at night the party of young fellows, robust, friendly.” They are nice fellows who are singing. In line nine, the author uses singing to show happiness, “Each singing what belongs to him or her and to none else.”

Likewise, “Let America Be America Again” embodies Hughes’ conflicting feelings regarding the United States. As argued by the parenthetical refrains throughout the poem such as, “(There’s never been equality for me, / Nor freedom in this “homeland of the free.”)” (“Let America Be America Again”), America was never this epitome of freedom. In fact, Hughes argues that the country merely “markets” this idea, and fails to deliver the actual expectation. In the parenthetical refrains, he declares that “(America never was America to me.)” (“Let America Be America Again”), showing that his true experiences in America never matched the fairytale-like description of “The Land of the Free.” In reality, the United States was quite the opposite from what individuals expected, filled with inequalities and dead dreams, a world, “Of dog eat dog, of mighty crush the weak” (“Let America Be America Again”) for those that weren’t previously well-off. Despite many people insisting that the American Dream is unattainable because of issues people will face in America, others argue that the American Dream is still very achievable these days because of the opportunities we provide, and new ways of living in the United States.

“I Hear America Singing” by Walt Whitman, accentuates his inherent attitude toward America which is also an element of his quintessential of human life. Whitman glorifies what America has based its faith on which is the ingeniousness of labor. It expresses Whitman’s love for America, its liveliness, variety, and the monumental achievements due to the ingeniousness of all its people. The poet writes that he hears “varied carols” from all the people contributing to the life and civilization of America. Whitman uses “delicious singing” as a metaphor to dramatize the individual passion and contribution of a mother to their homeland. In Walt Whitman's poem, he describes America as being a place packed with many citizens singing to their hearts content. Each of these people, he writes, possesses their own trade or hobby that fulfills them. By belting their own melody, they each express their own vision of "The American Dream." Whether it be the carpenter, or the mason, or the mechanic; each American citizen works hard individually to chase their own desires while simultaneously being apart of the massive group of dreamers who work together to all make America prosperous and beautiful.
