When I was little I constantly thought about what I wanted to be when I grew up. Like most kids, I thought of the most unrealistic career paths such as: celebrity, singer, or model. However, I did consider some more realistic careers such as: vet, teacher, and interior designer. While I did not ultimately choose any of these options, I am extremely confident in the profession I am working towards. I one day am hoping to be an Occupational Therapist. In high school I became aware that I wanted to do something in the healthcare field. I realized that a job like that would be extremely rewarding in so many ways. I first looked into nursing. Nursing is an amazing field and so many people are well equipped to take on this job, however I am not one of …show more content…
At that time in my life, I did not know much about rehabilitation, but the work the therapists were doing was so beautiful in my eyes. I loved how they could take a person who was most likely at one of their lowest points, back to the level of health they were accustomed to. After that initial exposure, I was constantly reading and researching about physical and occupational therapists. After extensive research I decided that Occupational Therapy peaked my interest more than Physical Therapy. Occupational therapists sometimes take a backseat to PTs, but they are so important. An OT therapy session usually involves the use of the fine motor skills that are essential in everyday life. OT’s help their patients be able to function in society, whether that involves cooking, putting on shoes, going to the bathroom, or writing with a pencil. OT’s also work with a large variety of people. OT’s can work in pediatrics, special needs, geriatrics, inpatient hospitals, outpatient hospitals, schools, acute care, and the list goes on and on. I personally would love to work with pediatrics and specialize in special
From that experience I went on to shadow OTA’s at Plant City Rehabilitation Center and at Hillsborough County Public Schools to further explore my interest. While shadowing I was also allowed to participate in working with the patients and discuss the role of an OTA in detail with the staff. Through these experiences and observations my interest has led to a desire to become an OTA.
The occupational therapist, I interviewed was Lorena Ortiz, MS, OTR/L. She is from Columbia, South America and currently lives in Greenville, South Carolina, where she has been a resident for sixteen years. She has three sisters, one brother and a son that is two years old. She attended Brea High School her junior and senior year and later graduate from Mauldin High School. Her favorite subject in School was anatomy because she enjoyed learning about the human body and the way it functions. In her opinion of what an occupational therapist is, she stated, “Helping people become as independent with daily activities as they wish after injury or disease.” The facilities where she works are, Greenville Health System, PRN acute care/In-patient rehab and Greer Memorial Hospital, out-patient rehab fulltime. Other areas she has worked are, subacute, long term acute care orthopedics. She worked as an occupational therapist assistance at St. Francis Hospital for seven years. While she worked at St. Francis Hospital, she later went back to school, for her master’s degree,
My long-term goal is to learn the techniques that are used by patients to help them progress. In addition, I want to explore the different work environments, which the occupational therapists work in such as in hospitals, clinics, or schools.
I chose occupational therapy because it helps people with special needs or rehab stuff to help them get better and get through school or work days. What do occupational therapists do and who do they work with? “Occupational therapy services typically include: an individualized evaluation, during which the client/family and occupational therapist determine the person’s goals, customized intervention to improve the person’s ability to perform daily activities and reach the goals, and an outcomes evaluation to ensure that the goals are being met and/or make changes to the intervention plan (ACTA).” Occupational therapist often work with younger kids with special needs to help them make it through school but sometimes they work with
My interest in becoming an Occupational Therapy Assistant comes from my desire to change lives. I want to help people do activities they never thought they would be able to do again. I want to be there for others and teach individuals to live a “Normal life.” I want to make a difference by being helpful and compassionate to others through a difficult
An Occupational Therapist is a individual that can evaluate, develop, and help people regain and maintain daily living skills. The goal of the Therapist is to offer intervention that focus on teaching skills and helping the patient as well as the family on how to adapt and strengthen themselves so that they might be able to overcome physical obstacles. Occupational Therapist work with other health professionals in speech therapy, nursing, physical therapy and social work to ensure that the patients course of treatment aligns with the other areas.
Occupational Therapists “ I believe that the therapist’s function should be to help people become free to be aware and to experience their possibilities” (“Rollo May Quotes”). This is a quote by rollo may, and he trying to let people know anybody is capable to experience possibilities or changes in their lives. Occupational Therapy assistants and aides help patients develop, recover, improve, as well as maintaining the skills patients need for a daily living. Occupational therapists work with directly providing all the therapy they can to the patients. Pursuing a career as an Occupational Therapist’s is a challenging and great career for those who want to work with children to build bonds and enjoy assigned tasks.
In this day and age, there are so many health careers out there most people don’t even know where to start when looking for an occupation that truly interest them. I’ve spent my whole life not knowing what I wanted to grow up to be and worrying about not knowing what to study in college. This past year I have recently been looking into Occupational Therapy. This form of therapy is to help those recuperating from physical or mental illness that encourages rehabilitation through the performance of activities required in daily life (What Is Occupational Therapy?, n.d.). People who work in this field are referred to as Occupational Therapist.
1. Job Description: What is the Job? What do these people do for a living? I won’t to be Therapists because I have always been interested in why people may do something or why they may behave a certain way. A therapist provides metal heath help and supports you with whatever you’re going though.
What intrigues me most in the field of Occupational Therapy is that I could make a positive impact in the lives of others. An occupational therapist can help a patient revitalize their physical, cognitive, or emotional disabilities, and develop or restore its functionality through continuous practice and effort. There is nothing more fulfilling for me than to see an individual achieving the greatest possible independence. This train of thought arose when I observed an occupational therapist working with my mother to return her arm to feeling normal again after her accident.
Twenty years ago, I first heard of occupational therapy and fell in love with the idea. I knew from that moment that OT was my dream career, and I decided to pursue an education institutions the medical field to make my dream a reality.
The profession of occupational therapy which, treat injured, ill, or disabled patients through the therapeutic use of everyday activities appealed to me because occupational therapists can work with clients of all ages and they can work in numerous settings, such as hospitals, schools, or private clinics. Occupational therapy also interested me because
I always knew I was meant to be in the health care field. I grew up with my mother being a registered nurse. I admired the work my mother did, but I knew that wasn’t the career path for me. I believe that everyone should have the opportunity to live independently, safely, and unrestrictedly. I want to be an occupational therapist for the direct role I’d have in a patient’s life and rehabilitation process.
Growing up I always knew I wanted something more than just a “job”. I wanted a career that would be rewarding and encompass a combination of my talents and interests. As a child, I dreamed of being a doctor, mechanical engineer, nurse, dental hygienist, and teacher. It was not until my freshman year of college that I took a good look at career choices. After hearing about occupational therapy, I did a great deal of research to find out what it was, what the therapists did, who they worked with, and the influence they had on the lives of others. As I continued through my college experience, occupational therapy always remained at the top of my list of possible careers. I began to see that it was a perfect combination of all the things I wanted to be when I grew up. I could work as a healthcare professional, help people in need, problem solve, and bring light and hope into people’s lives. Observing several different occupational therapists has confirmed that this is the career for me.
When I first considered occupational therapy, I was a sophomore in college sitting in my advisors office upset because I had no clue what I was doing with my life. I knew I wanted to be part of the medical field but couldn’t narrow it down any further. I had signed up for classes required for medical school, thinking those would cover my bases as I figured out what I actually wanted to do. My advisor and I were discussing my passion for helping people find ways to improve their lives and be independent. She kept encouraging me to look into occupational therapy because she thought it would be perfect for me.
