ICT and Business Development
In line with the main priorities set by the URBACT Information Society Network, this theme focuses on business development and the role of ICT as a means of tackling economic restructuring and promoting employment and in doing so fostering social cohesion and economic inclusion.
The purpose of this brief document is to act as a guide for colleagues when preparing material or presentations on this topic and to provoke discussion on the issues raised in it.

Increasingly networks are not just confined to the office but are being adopted so that they allow home/remote working that supports changing business needs.
This transformation has really taken place over the last 20 years and continues to transform the way business is done. No business today can ignore the use of technology as its effective use helps businesses to remain competitive and profitable, thereby creating or safeguarding jobs.
The role of the Public Sector?
What is the case for Public Sector intervention if this is already happening? Talking specifically about SME’s, the final report (Feb. 2004) of the European Go Digital Awareness campaign 2001-2003 shows that "to help SME’s to “Go Digital” is still a policy challenge" as SME’s remain sceptical about ICT and e-business. This is mainly the result of:

Networking communication, such as the intranet and Internet, provides a collaboration platform that allows business employees to share and edit documents and projects across the organization. Successfully introducing these components into the widget company will make business a lot easier to manage and will help increase productivity.

Information technology has advanced in multiple ways in society, where organizations has implement the structure into their work environment. Industries have outsource their manufacturing to other places in the world and rely on telecommunication to keep the marketing. The geographic distribution has changed significantly by reducing the distance it takes to complete an operation, due to information technology. These are just a couple of examples of how this advanced technology has reshape our society and continuing.
Over the years, technology has become a major part for a business and for an individual as well. Technology has become so advance that it has made a major effect for the staff as well as for the customers. New technology has helped in many areas such as data and information storage, advertising, transportation and communication.
Governments around the world have put in place policies to encourage the growth of local small and medium enterprises (SMEs) as they can help directly alleviate poverty by increasing income levels and creating jobs (ESCAP, 2012). At the same time, the global economy has become increasingly depended on the Information and communications technology (ICT) for market access and information. SMEs need to have access to and use of ICT to engage in the regional and global economic business networks. If SMEs are not accessible to ICT, many of the SMEs are set to lose out on opportunities to integrate into the global supply chain, get potential businesses and increase their productivity or efficiency.
Technology has advanced and changed very rapidly. Our business world depends on the most recent technology. Technology impacts customers’ choices of buying because what costumers want is convenience and personal satisfied tastes.
In modern society, technology has affected in every area and industries, and helped develop more advantage than tradition industries without technology. E-commerce, Customer Relationships Management (CRM) and online sales etc. are widespread use in many organisations around the word (Philip Kotler., 2013).
At the same time to the extent that our individual lives have changed, the business world has altered practically to the point of being unrecognizable in the past few decades.
