Although it may appear basic, stereotypical, or over used, freedom is essential to being an American. All aspects of America build upon this foundational idea. Think back to America’s humble beginnings. The first Americans built a country from nothing, fueled by strong work ethic and a hunger for freedom. Revolutionary leaders like George Washington and Alexander Hamilton stood for an entity greater than themselves.

Freedom gives people a sense of stability. In the text, “Reading Lolita in Tehran,” it talks about how Iran forced woman to adhere to an islamic dress code. However, this dress code made women worry about going out and being ridiculed and punished due to the fact that the way they were dressed was unacceptable. Freedom comes to mind. Whether you are an American citizen, soldier fighting for rights, third world country worker, or any concerned person, freedom is the one thing that unites the world together. Freedoms make you who you are and shape your life and goals. The people who yearn for freedom are typically grateful and hard working, while the population of the world who have a vast amount of rights take advantage of their freedoms by constantly wanting to change their government.

According to the Scott, Foresman Advanced Dictionary, freedom means having the power to do, say, or think as one pleases. To me, freedom means being able to show emotion in public. With freedom, I can feel safe, confident and secure in my country. To me, freedom also means having a voice and letting it be heard. With freedom, I get to make my own decisions and choices. I am lucky as an American citizen to have freedom and rights, but some countries aren’t as lucky as we are. Some are still stuck under dictatorships.

There are the positives of having freedom as well as negatives. Living in the United States you are not required to do anything as for example China it is a state law that makes them learn martial arts. We have the freedom over here to do as we wish in most situations, like we can go to college, we can work even though they set certain hours that we can work but then again we can pick a shift. Having your freedom is the most important thing in the world because it gives you the right to do as you wish. To me I think that some people take their freedom for granted, doing stupid stuff like committing a crime that they get locked up for. We all have certain things that we enjoy and even though

Today, The freedom may could be considered by the value of Amercian. According to The Atlantic, when American were asked the question “What contributes to America having stronger values than other places in the world?”, over the half of Amercian say the freedom is important. There also is a another example. Scholastic News Online asked the children that “What does it mean to be an American?”, among 24 children most of them said that the freedom is most important. So, Cheyenne L said “I think it means to be free. I wouldn’t want to be from any other country.”. The fact that children said freedom is important means that the education of the United States also have taught that the freedom is core value of the Amercian. Therefore, it can be told that the prominent national identitiy of being American is the freedom.

Freedom is to Liberty. Freedom gives one the authority to speak out, express, and think without any limitation or hindrance. Whereas, liberty just adds in to free will. However, what many do not realize is that one may be free but there is limitation involved. When the Preamble to the U.S. Constitution was driven by the Framers, they made sure to put a limitation to ones liberty. The Framers intention of putting a limitation was to prevent any rise of problems and to structure the government by it. Throughout time people have talked about peace and the many ways in which we can obtain it, unfortunately it seems the most successful way of accomplishing that peace is through violence. Many people claim they want peace, but in order to achieve it they must fight in war. War is described as bloody, gory, and deadly; which seems very far from the words that would be used to describe peace, but ironically the horrible and disturbing wars that take place, are in fact how we obtain that peaceful state of mind.
