What is Prevent?
Prevent is one of the four “P”s that make up the government’s post 9/11 counter-terrorism strategy, known as CONTEST.
The aim of CONTEST is to reduce the risk to the UK and its interests overseas from terrorism, so that people can go about their lives freely and with confidence. It covers all forms of terrorism and is organised around 4 workstreams, each comprising a number of key objectives:
Pursue: to stop terrorist attacks
Prevent: to stop people becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism
Protect: to strengthen our protection against a terrorist attack
Prepare: to mitigate the impact of a terrorist attack
First developed in early 2003 revised were made publicly available in 2006. Further revised were published on 24 March 2009 and most recently on 11th of July 2011.

But PREVENT is not about any single individual, faith or community. Those who are suspected of being engaged in illegal activity will be managed through the UK judicial system. Prevent is about working with communities to help them support vulnerable people and build resilience to groups or individuals who seek to create divisions and cause harm.
