Decent Essays

Purpose: As there were four different parts, each one had a specific goal. Part 1 was to identify over-the-counter drugs that are easy for the average person to obtain. Drugs like aspirin, acetaminophen, sodium bicarbonate, and effervescent antacid were tested with H2O, pH, HCl, and FN to see if there was a reaction. This helped to determine the unknowns. Part two was meant to identify illegal drugs. Simulated marijuana, LSD, and cocaine were tested with their fluorescence under a blacklight and reactions with HCl, Scott reagent, and Van Urk. Part three involved the identification of heavy metals. Mercury, lead, and an unknown were reacted with potassium dichromate to see the changes. Part four was a chromatography test of nitrogenous bases with simulated urine. This was used to find which amino acids were in the urine. Some require that a person only has a certain amount of them. They are typically used for medical uses; aspirin can be used as pain relief and to help for fevers. When given an unknown, it is possible that these drugs can be compared by how they react with other substances. Test 1 revealed that it was simple with careful observation to determine what an unknown is and to therefore use those results across multiple
