Identifying With Rapunzel In Disney's Tangled

Byron Howard and Nathan Greno’s Tangled and the Grimm Brother’s “Rapunzel” tell two similar but noticeably different versions of the story about a girl with long hair kept locked away in a tower. While Tangled presents a fairly lighthearted story, with some moments of despair, “Rapunzel” is told in a mostly despondent manner. This paper will attempt to discern the differences in themes by comparing and contrasting the routes taken the stories.

Parent roles in Disney films determine a lot about what will happen to the child, main character, of the story. The three reoccurring roles of parents, no parents, single parents, and adopted parents continue to have a huge impact on the child’s life. Single parents affect the child differently by their gender. A child who loses his/her parents is forced to grow up on their own if they do not have anyone to look after them. As you grow up, you have the tendency to believe the world revolves solely around you. That's not a bad thing because everyone goes through it. Your world only exists within your personal space and nothing further. Whatever event that triggers a negative response from a child is usually a rude awakening from their own little world, that the reality of the true world they live in is chaotic and messy. His predecessors were coal miners, and steelworkers, occupations that made Appalachia an industrial heaven, until these jobs vanished and resulted in hardships that stripped away families from economic security. The Appalachian Region stretches from the northern part of New York, through Pennsylvanyia, all of West Virginia, the West side of Kentucky, Mississippi, and the southern parts of Maryland, S.Carolina, N. Carolina, and Alabama. The immigrants who settled in the Appalachian Region were made-up of three main ethinic backgrounds; Scot-Irish, English, and German. “Appalachian people are considered a separate culture, made up of many unique backgrounds—Native Americans, Irish, English and Scotch, and then a third descendants of German and Polish immigrants—all blended together across the region”(“Appalachian Culture”, 2015). The immigrants came to the Appalachian Region either in search of land at cheaper prices or to get away from the Quacker Leaders. The Appalachian Region has proven to create a hard way of life for those who settled the region. “The people who settled in the Appalachian region were known as hearty people who lived in an often difficult environment”(“What is Unique”, 2015). Those who live in the Appalachian Region today may not face the same challenges as his or her ancestors who settled the region, but there is no doubt the Appalachians still brings a set of challenges. However, no matter the challenges there is one thing those who live in Appalachia share, tradition. It is these traditions that assisted the first settlers, our ancestors, in living life and are still getting present day Appalachians through.

There is a small, isolated town in Pennsylvania that is doing exceptionally well health-wise called Roseto. Before the invention of drugs that prevent heart disease, heart attacks were a major epidemic in the US. Stewart Wolf revealed, “It was impossible to be a doctor, common sense said, and not see heart disease.” (page 6) Despite how prominent heart problems were, for some unknown reason, Roseto did not experience the same troubles. I am from Dayton, Ohio. I saw similarities and difference between Dayton, Ohio and Appalachia Baghban. I attend Christian Private School, and the students were from surrounding cities like Xenia, Huber Height, and Kettering. As Baghban pointed out, the children were influenced by their homes and cities. Baghban brought up family values, education and literacy in Appalachian, and Dayton residents and private school student share similarities and difference with Appalachian culture.

The Amish have been around since the early 1700s in the United States. They first migrated to Pennsylvania when they came from Switzerland and Germany. The Amish have spread to many other states, but today are primarily in the states of Ohio and Pennsylvania (Hostetler, 2009). The Amish have a unique way of life and have strong beliefs rooted in their faith. Today, the Amish are continuing to grow, because they are having such large families (Hostetler, 2009). The elderly population within the community plays an important aspect in the decision making and planning for the family. Through story-telling the elderly pass down to the next generations information about the culture itself. The Amish lifestyles and beliefs are what shape them as a community and what causes them to be at risk of illnesses and injuries more than other cultures around them.

Repunzel is the girl with the magical long hair who has to take care of herself while she lives 16 years in a tower. As a girl who is very independent this always appealed to me, although this girl is alone in a tower she finds a way to stay preoccupied and motivated. As a girl who stays in her own world and does not share her feelings, this sticks out to me that you do not need someone to make you feel confident about yourself, or to stay motivated, you can do that yourself. Not many people in Indiana are unfortunate enough to say that they know of a town called Lapel. It is not a very big town and not many people have heard of it outside of truck drivers and travelers just passing through. Up until six years ago, I had never heard of the town either. If I could say anything to those people who think very little about small towns and think that they are just full of country bumpkins, I would say that I used to be one of them. A lot of movies popularize this idea and will lead you to believe this and that about small town people, but they never capture the beauty of it. Some people do not like the idea of a small town because they have their own preconceived notions about it, but personally I think it’s a beautiful thing to be a part of.
