This quote illustrates how in our world, a person’s identity can be easily changed. Many Americans are effected by this problem today. Citizens, criminals, and the government all play a role in this process. However, many disagree as to whether identity theft should be allowed in our country. Based on the history of identity theft and relationships between American citizens, the government, and this issue, identity theft should be abolished in America.

Identity theft is said to be one of the fasting growing crimes in America. According to our textbook, the lifestyle exposure theory, explains the different levels of exposure risk and how some people are exposed to higher risk than others depending on their lifestyle. Identity theft or fraud is when someone takes illegal actions and steal someone’s personal information to gain something from it. The theft can gain access to demographic information easily from the internet to get your name, email address, telephone number, birthday, and even your physical address (Archer, 2012).

There are many things that could have been taken away from the FDIC MoneySmart simulated podcasts. One thing that really stuck with me is how dangerous identity theft is. A person can access your credit card information, your social security info and your credit report simply by opening one of your bills. It is scary to think that someone would just go through your mail to access that. We no longer have any personal privacy because people can easily access our information. My sisters wallet was stolen right out of her purse, when she was at the hospital one time. The person who stole it, used her credit card to make multiple purchases. Around half of teens have been cyber bullied and well over half don't tell a parent when it does occur. Parents should use parental control because their are predators on social media. It is "the individual character or personality of an individual," and when a person is a victim of identity theft, it is this "distinct characteristic" that is stolen Therefore the victims of identity theft often feel a deep sense of violation as they struggle to reclaim their good names. The government must implement better regulations to help put an end to this crime which is affecting millions of innocent Americans. Until then there are three important ways individual must protect themselves against identity theft, customers should understand how identity thieves work, guard their personal information, and learn how to fight back.

Can you imagine getting all of your personal information records getting stolen and not having any protection? Identity is a valuable, and irreplaceable responsibility and it needs to be protected. Government protection can help decrease records and social security numbers from getting stolen. This step forward can result in fewer criminals in the future. Although this has been getting harder over the years due to the advancements in technology through social media and different types of communication modes that are getting used more then ever in the past. In the coming years there should be help implemented in the protection of security systems used while also implementing stricter regulations.

Identity stealing was an issue I familiar with since 2008. I was working at the internet cafe (warnet) at the time. Media covers countless stories about “Catfish”. Many people became victims. Lesson I learned was not to reveal the full identities including date of birth, simply because I use it to stay in touch with people whether I know them well or not. After all, social media was an informal platform of communication at that point.
