Imagery of Women. “The connection between and among women are the most feared, The most problematic and the most potentially transforming force on the planet.” –Adrienne Rich. For many years Adrienne Rich was one of the most influential writers of the feminist movements. She is also known for her use of political issues in her poems. She considers herself a socialist because “socialism represents moral values – the dignity and human rights of all citizens” (Daily News). In one of her poems, “Necessities of life,” Rich focused on death. Adrienne Rich got a negative reaction to her earlier poem “Snapshots of a Daughter-in-Law” which was her first overly feminist poem (Marilyn Hacker) and thought she had failed, so she focused on death in her next poem “as a sign of how erased she felt when her own sense of coming into rightful subject matter and voice was denied” (Deborah Pope). The poem “Snapshots of a Daughter-in-Law” is a feminist poem. “Snapshots of a Daughter-in-Law” portrays Adrienne Rich’s theme of feminism through her use of diction and imagery. “Snapshots of a Daughter-in-Law” seems to be a sonnet sequence because of the shape and structure of many of the sections (Marilyn Hacker). It does not exactly follow the form though. The line counts of the 10 sections are: 13, 12, 14, 10, 3, 16, 7, 9, 21, 14. The title of this poem is actually confusing to most.
