As a student, taking the course African immigration seemed like a no-brainer. I was born in Ghana, a country residing in the Western part of Africa. I felt that taking this class allowed me to know how African made their case traveling around the world. Most of the time, the main motive, is to seek a better life due to their country poor economy or sometimes they move for new beginnings as they feel like a new country will be much safer and more productive for them to be in. Throughout the course, students are assigned different excerpts on how African immigrants are treated at their new home, most of them being targeted due to their skin color and also for the belief that immigrants enter the country to come take jobs away. He narrates the story in a way the reader knows how hard life was for an African immigrant who just entered a new country. Generally, every article given to us to had a universal message about immigrants coming here to seek asylum and how they were able to sense that they belong in their new home or not. For instance, in Harare north, the main character knew that his presence was not welcomed so he knew that he had to find refuge somewhere where he would feel at ease. This happened when he just reached the country. This relates to one of the articles we read written by Dr. Allison Okuda which talks about a group of musicians who felt that music abroad would be the same as back home but to their dismay, it was very different and not very welcoming. These two scenarios are alike due to the fact that the narrator thought that he would be welcomed with open arms to his cousin’s house but just as he got there his cousin’s wife made him know that his presence was actually not appreciated by her, so he should start looking for refuge somewhere. In terms of Okuda’s paper, the musicians believed that making music in a new country and listening to it at the same time felt very different to the one back home causing them to feel very displaced in their new
