As a student, taking the course African immigration seemed like a no-brainer. I was born in Ghana, a country residing in the Western part of Africa. I felt that taking this class allowed me to know how African made their case traveling around the world. Most of the time, the main motive, is to seek a better life due to their country poor economy or sometimes they move for new beginnings as they feel like a new country will be much safer and more productive for them to be in. Throughout the course, students are assigned different excerpts on how African immigrants are treated at their new home, most of them being targeted due to their skin color and also for the belief that immigrants enter the country to come take jobs away. In the book Harare …show more content…
He narrates the story in a way the reader knows how hard life was for an African immigrant who just entered a new country. Generally, every article given to us to had a universal message about immigrants coming here to seek asylum and how they were able to sense that they belong in their new home or not. For instance, in Harare north, the main character knew that his presence was not welcomed so he knew that he had to find refuge somewhere where he would feel at ease. This happened when he just reached the country. This relates to one of the articles we read written by Dr. Allison Okuda which talks about a group of musicians who felt that music abroad would be the same as back home but to their dismay, it was very different and not very welcoming. These two scenarios are alike due to the fact that the narrator thought that he would be welcomed with open arms to his cousin’s house but just as he got there his cousin’s wife made him know that his presence was actually not appreciated by her, so he should start looking for refuge somewhere. In terms of Okuda’s paper, the musicians believed that making music in a new country and listening to it at the same time felt very different to the one back home causing them to feel very displaced in their new
Traditionally immigrants are faced numerous challenges on a daily basis. America is known as the place where there is a chances to succeed, a place where you can be free. Numerous Immigrants came to America with the goal that they could have a more noteworthy plausibility at prevailing in life. Settlers went out on a limb a when coming to America, for some it worked out well however for others they had a troublesome time here. Regardless of the battles that the outsiders experienced, for example, emerging from others, being isolated from their families, and breaking their way of life, the settlers are as yet thankful to be in America since they were in preferable conditions over they were in their country.
The United States has been the land of opportunity for immigrants. It is a place where immigrants from all over the world come to build a better dream and future for their families and leave from poverty, they come with nothing but determination. One thing that every immigrant brings with them is their culture. A person's culture is strongly tied to the country where they grew up. It is tied to their relationship with their family. Many people come to America from so many different places all over the world. For this reason, people call America a melting pot of cultures immigrants are striving for a better future even though when they migrate to the USA they don’t know the consequences they will face and struggle to be successful living in the United States.
In the late 1800’s and early 1900’s many immigrants came to the United States for a better way of life. I chose this particular question because I am first generation American.
The increasing fear of crime and terrorism in the world is persuading many Americans that the country should close its door. But what about the fact that this country itself was founded by the immigrants? American journey of success would have not been possible without the generations of immigrants who have come to its shores from every corner of the world. I believe immigrants are a positive influence on America because they strengthen the country’s economy, allow people of America to learn about different cultures, languages and ideas, and shapes how the world views America.
Immigrants that came to America were pursuing a secure life for themselves and better lives for their children or future children; they envisioned America as the land of opportunity and a prosperous country in which to pursue any endeavor they chose, but no one recognized what was happening to the other half of the country and its citizens--the reality of the thousands of people living in the streets and going months without work--until they arrived. The idea was to come to America and find the American dream, but no one realized just how hard that would be until it was too late. There has always been a false premise of the American dream and the land of opportunity, and the immigrants discovered this the hard way.
Every year many immigrants from all over the world try to come to America, and we all know they want to have a better life in a country with safety and strong economic. This happened creates several problems for the government and people who live here. Thus, the government tries to prevent harmful happened, it has been paying loads of money and effort to find a probable way to protect the country and also helping people around the world who want to come in our active country with encouraging mindset to have the improved future for themselves and their family. In order to fulfill expectation and need of immigrants, America has very clear law with processing step by step to help immigrants, but lots of people who want to come to have a supportive
Although some may argue that the United States is the “land of opportunity,” or the home of the “American dream,” the reality when it comes to the matter of whether or not the U.S. is a desirable immigration destination falls flat in that it is nothing better than an advertisement jingle on television, just a catchy phrase and tune. The truth of the matter is that the United States, as it was in the 20th century as presented in the provided sources was not the ideal immigration destination as the United States United States presented immigrants with perils of limited opportunities presented to the immigrants and unsafe labor and living conditions.
Every person, or group of persons, has an identity and a culture tied to them from the country in which they grew up. An identity is the image someone present to the rest of the world, and culture is the image which one has of his/herself. Countries are similar to a person; over its history of being influenced by other countries, it has formed an identity and culture for itself. It has been stated that the worst act performed by others on another is to take away their identity, and deny them of their culture. Immigrants in America experience the loss of cultural norms/ values, cultural practices/ traits, adjustment to a new culture and changes in identity and concept of self. It is important to note that most immigrants are from minority groups.
There are two types of migrants, especially families, that have been affected by IIRIRA, legal migrants and illegal migrants. It is the different treatment of these two migrants under the law for family reunification benefits that create a hierarchy of mixed status families, which prioritizes wealthier, fairer and better educated migrants over those who are low-income, non-white and less educated. The profiles legal migrant spouses, such visa-overstaying and legal permanent residents, are vastly different than the profiles of undocumented spouses entering the border illegally. Migrants seeking any type of temporary visa for the US is required to prove sufficient funds to cover all costs of the trip and intent to depart after the completion of one’s trip (Bureau of Consular Affairs).
Another thing that was very detailed in this chapter was the immigrants overall journey and experience while traveling. Due to the many attempts they go through because they are caught and deported various times along the way they eventually learn tricks and shortcuts in the streets and on the trains. Enrique and many of the other immigrants have an idea of which paths to take and they know where they’ll find bandits, gangs, and police and therefore they try to avoid them at all costs. They are also aware of the residents in the towns and whether they’d be more sympathetic towards them and help them out or whether they will send them away with nothing to eat. The immigrants also know that if they ask for food by themselves rather than in groups
In 2016, only 55.5% of American voters turned out to vote in the 2016 election between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. (Voter Turnout in the United States Presidential Elections.) The fact that these statistics are only based on American voters makes many people wonder how much of an impact it would make if immigrants voted as well. But here is the catch: immigrants cannot vote at all in the United States unless they are actual citizens of the United States, and this is one of the problems Project I is looking to fix. Project I is a government funded project that is targeting the education and housing of immigrant women and children. The focus on women and children has to do with the fact that it is harder for women, specifically single mothers
When the immigrant come to America should Americans welcome them in the U.S.? That was question for immigrants who came from another countries to America to improve their life and make it better. It’s also the argument that people have been debate for a long time since 20th century when Jim Crow Laws still in that period. How can an immigrant get American dream to become total American? As an immigrant we must be strong, hard working and hopeful to achieve American dream.
The cause of various epidemics, diseases, outbreaks of war, unemployment in other countries like China, Europe, etc. made people immigrate to the United States to cities like New York, Chicago, Philadelphia and other cities. These cities also attracted people due to various developed technologies like lights, streetcars, shops, etc. It was a time when these cities had job opportunities available. Other factors like industrialization, transport through railroads and ships also brought a lot of immigrants to the country. The immigrants came and started doing jobs that they were familiar with. They were ready to adjust to any conditions. They led a pretty hard life. Families crowded together in a single room and worked hard to earn the money.
Immigrants created America, a nation that has embraced immigration. Throughout the years, America developed its “American Dream” concept, which states that anyone can succeed in the United States as long as that person works hard and does gives up. That concept, hope or dream attracts thousands of individuals, many of which leave their native countries with their hearth full of hope and the illusion of reaching and living the “American Dream.” However, the wonderful dream in many occasions has become nothing but a horrible and unbearable nightmare. They arrive to “the land of opportunity” that they thought was awaiting for them with fortune and instead encounter a divided society, in which some people understand their plight and sympathize with them while other look at them with anger, resentment, and even hate as if they are anything but human beings.
Thank you for the update, as you are aware I live outside the city and need some time to make an arrangement to move into the city- please give me reasonable amount of time to make the move. Also, I would like to bring to your attention I have pre-planned 3 weeks’ international travel on the month of March (March 5-25), and it might be beneficial for both city of Pittsburgh and myself to start after my vacation to avoid any disruption on work (it is your call).
