Does Art Have An Affect On Our Social And Political Issues? Art can kill and art can heal. Movies have the power to affect people's thoughts, monuments can cause conflict with certain groups, digital art bends the rules of aesthetics and influences society today, and music is the key to bringing communities together and is credible for informing the world of our unnoticed issues. In the article “10 artists who tackle social issues of today,” it talks about artists who change the way people think about certain social issues. Art is the most effective mode of communication because it affects our emotions, the way we think about things, and gives us different views of certain topics. (John Dewey) Movies effects racism, global warming, and politics, monuments can affect people’s views on a country or state, and digital art plays a factor in our emotions, moods, and thoughts. Movies have an effect on viewers and it's art influence has the power to change people's views on political and social issues. According to researches at Yale, “The Day After Tomorrow” made you think more about global warming. They asked 529 people who watched the movie and some who did not watch the movie. Studies showed that 83% of viewers said they were somewhat or very concerned about global warming after seeing the film compared to 72% non-watchers. The graph below shows the amount of people affected by political issues. It shows the amount of viewers and the amount of non-viewers. Darren Davis
Some of the most redefining and revolutionary moments in the history of man socially, have been catalyzed by use of art. Throughout the age’s music, imagery and poetry have been a fundamental tool in reaching out to the masses to condemn vices, motivate people and bring awareness. One cannot underestimate the impact that art has in influencing and communicating an idea to the people. Art is an integral ingredient in the cohesion and integration of any society. Through poetry, the poet is able to put across a message that resonates in the minds of the reader in an artistic manner that ultimately triggers a response. Art is therefore a force to reckon with in the transformation of a society or a regime.
Arts sole purpose is to evoke an emotion out of its audience and influence them as well. Whether art makes you feel euphoric or sad, it resonates within every individual differently. In this day in age, artists utilize the internet as a method of sharing their work freely with others. According to Lethem, “The American commons include tangible assets such as public for public assets such as public forests and minerals, intangible wealth such as copyrights and patents, critical infrastructures such as the Internet and government research , and cultural resources such as the broadcast airwaves and public spaces. They include resources we’ve paid for as taxpayers and inherited from previous generations” (222). This suggests the Internet is a creative resource that is invaluable to the art community; however, it should be used with caution. The internet is not a resource that can be owned or privatized, which is why individuals can be exposed to anything at any time. On the internet, many images pop up quite frequently and they evoke little to no emotion from those who see it, because they have seen it a numerous amount of times. This is unfortunate, because the quality of one’s work is being diminished if people have become indifferent towards it. Nelson argues that, “But there are also perils. And one is that in cultural moment defined (by some, for some) by image flow, the question of what one should look at, along with attendant inquiries into nature and effect of images blowing by, has creepy way of overtaking almost all other questions” (304). This infers that image flow is something that alters how individuals are affected by art and the feelings one should have toward it. Although technology has been beneficial to the art community, image flow continues to damage the effect that art is intended to have. Seeing
giving a voice to problems, social and political criticism, and human emotion in an artistic form.
Arts promotes understanding and inspires people to take action on issues that are being faced in today’s society. Having many forms of art all over social media, television and billboards, help promote and solve problems regarding social injustice by connecting with society through emotions. It causes people to feel guilt, happiness, grievance, and fear which all impact the kind of stance a person is willing to take on an issue. Art is a visual explanation of events that take place so it educates the public and gets a reaction out of them. This is exactly what the photographer James Nachtwey does, his photos document wars, conflicts and critical social issues that need to be resolved immediately.
n reflecting on this week’s readings, I can see the connection between the previous readings on the Harlem Renaissance and the one on Abstract Expressionism, especially as it relates to art being used for social change. Just as our society was moving at a fast pace, so was our art. Looking back, it’s amazing to see how racism, women’s rights and war brought on so many different attitudes and the art of the 20th century represented these different ideas. As it relates to war, many people were concerned about the dangers of democracy, while others emphasized patriotism. In either case, you can see a split between people’s perceptions and beliefs. It’s clear that most of the artist of the 20th century that we discussed were always on the cutting edge toward cultural change. Their shocking and innovative techniques reflected the changing values that represented a forever changing society; and often times their art helped shaped our culture, and at the same time, reflected that culture back on to us. From all the different art movements discussed during this course, this week’s readings represents the changing role they art is beginning to play in the political area. I believe that art plays a vital role in democracy, by creating openness and the freedom of expression. It’s amazing how art, be that it through a painting, literature, sculpting or through music can bring about change. Art really makes an impact on our culture and society, from instilling values or by changing opinions. It seems at the heart of every major change throughout our history, you will find an artist that created that change through his or her works. We form our ideas by seeing,
Art is important to culture and our society. Society is culture, or more accurately, society is the people who make up a
Prior to people writing off art, every person needs to sit down educated themselves about the culture. The information is extensive to learned about but very informative. Though art is considered to be an expression of creativity, it holds certain qualities that will benefit society. Art is more than express the creativity, it is a source of stress reliever, a channel of communication, and it deescalates the racial tension. Art has played a significant role in the gilded era, social justice movements and diversity. Art ideology brought unity among people and it also gave the world visual representation of time. That representation is being discussed in today society allowing people to have peaked at the times back then. Finally, as society
In “Is Art a Waste of time?” it is said that “Art’s impact grows by reaching larger audiences” (Southan, 439). For example, the more people who see images/videos of police officers harassing or using unnecessary brutal force on people of color the impact also grows. Individuals will start to empathize and want to make a change, therefore, bringing attention to the issue. Through art like images in the newspaper, videos on the internet, and paintings is how we learn about many issues going on in the world. If it was not for this form of art we would live in a world full of unaware people, and that would be chaos.
While art is only a hobby to some, it can be a source of happiness and closure to others. Art, literature, and music have helped numerous people through challenging times, being an outlet in which one can let their emotions out. This being said, struggles such as addiction and depression can have an affect on an artists work. Many artists would not have the same quality of work they have today if they did not channel their emotions through art as a outlet. Sharing experiences through art is one of the most timeless ways to tell a story, dating way back to some of the first pieces literature and music created. Art is one of the biggest outlets in which one can let their emotions out in a healthy and effective way, sharing one’s story, getting their feelings figured out, while impacting the quality of work that is created.
Today art is perceived to be accepted as a means to reconcile communities, heal the past and build the future. Art can act as a conduit for strengthening communities across the world. The arts can open a dialogue among communities and can create an opportunity for engagement. They can play a vital role in avoiding conflicts by helping us understand and bridge cultural differences. The means that can be adopted for this transformation are diverse and range from dance, music, theatre and visual arts.
Art has been a popular medium for public outcry, change and propaganda regarding issues relevant to war and suffering for hundreds of years. German expressionist Kathe Kollwitz and Spanish cubist Pablo Picasso are two artists who through their artwork have engaged with mass audiences and conveyed their own personal ideologies, emotions and beliefs on issues relevant to their world.
Andy Warhol was loved by everyone due to view and of course his art. Andy Warhol rose to become famous in several ways and soon became the most controversial artist of the 21st century. His views, as well as his art, was associated with the Pop Art Movement in the 1960s. The famous art made by Andy didn’t just changed our view on art, it change art entirely.
Art is used in mass media to influence people, especially people in the generation and culture we live in today. The majority of art young people receive in our culture is through television and in particularly popular culture networks, like MTV. The television show on MTV called The Hills is an example of a show that promotes dominant ideology to young children/ teenagers. Slightly opposite of that would be another show on MTV called Jersey Shore, which is an example of a show that partly reinforces and partly challenges dominant ideology to the same type of audience. The two shows are looking at people who are in their 20s and there life as they live it in their current situation, they both claim to be reality television with no scripts.
Art is a catalyst of change. It can confront both social and political issues as well as providing people with a creative outlet in which they can express their innermost thoughts and feelings - but what effect can art have on our society as a whole? Artists today have the unique ability to connect with people in a creative, innovative way that they can understand and interpret themselves. With this ability, artists are able to express their own views as well as influencing the views of others. Art is an immense part of our world – so much so that we barely even consider its impact upon us – but just how significant is the work of artists in our modern day society?
Art is not just a picture on a wall or in a museum, art comes in many forms. It can be a song you just heard, a video you watched, or a painting you saw in a gallery. Also, art can be just text. All forms of art grasp you in different ways and make your thoughts evolve to new distances. Art can bring you feelings you did not think you had. You can perceive the art in many ways and the creator wants it to influence you. I believe that yes, at can truly influence society and inform human behavior. While it may seem to some that pictures, songs, and videos influence you the most, it is actually true that books are the most influential and informative because they get in touch with your mind and emotions.
