Racism is something that most people would claim they do not believe in or support; however, as clearly shown in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, racism is a disease that spreads through a region and worsens as time goes on. Racism is an issue that is still prevalent in the American society today, and Harper Lee’s timeless novel continues to teach the lesson that one needs to look beyond the color of another man’s skin and see them for who they truly are. Mr. Raymond’s conversation with Dill after Tom Robinson’s testimony initially shows that racism is better comprehended with age. How does racism affect a story? As a kid in the 1930s, Harper Lee grew up when there was hardly any equality for African Americans. Harper Lee’s only novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, is heavily based off of prejudice and racism from her childhood. In her book, she writes about racial discrimination through the eyes of a six year-old girl, named Jean Louise ‘Scout’ Finch, during the Great Depression. Her and her family are deeply tied into racism and prejudice involved throughout this story. Racism in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird is ever apparent as the story is located in a small southern town in Alabama; it is reflected upon three of the main characters: Jean Louise ‘Scout’ Finch, Jem Finch and their father, Atticus Finch.

They don’t understand how the jury could find an innocent man guilty just because he is a different race. Throughout the book, Scout and Jem have to learn about the racism problem in America, and why it is dividing the country. To Kill a Mockingbird shows that racism has the power to negatively affect a community because it makes good people do bad things, creates hypocrisy, and it creates hatred.

When in court, the ideal is that there will be no bias and that everyone will say the truth. But again, humans are not perfect, so these expectations cannot always be reached. In the trial almost didn’t matter what the conditions of the order, because of the judgment towards black people. Tom was seen as guilty anyway. One of humans most primordial instincts is to survive, and to do that you have to look out for yourself. Humans are generally very selfish and tends to do things only if it benefits them. On the social ladder of Maycomb County a black man is considered lower ranked than the poorest white person, like Mayella Ewell or the Cunninghams. This is something that she knows would sway the case in her favor. Based on the color of her skin she won this case, not based on the evidences and facts that prove otherwise. Throughout the court case it is evident that the Ewells don’t have a proper case. The bruises on Mayella’s face are on the right side, meaning that someone left-hand dominant would have had to punch her. Her father is left-handed whereas Tom Robinson lost his left hand in an accident, As well Mayella Ewell kept changing her answer further proving that she didn’t have a proper alibi. For example on page 248 she says “ no I don’t recollect if he hit me. I mean yes I do, he hit me.” Even her going as far as to play the pity card by bursting out into tears pointed out by Jem when he says “she’s got enough sense to make the judge feel sorry for her” (page 241). Even though all the facts and evidences point at Tom Robinson being innocent, sole fact that he is a black man makes him guilty.
