You have the freedom and rights to do many things in our country, this is because of the amendments. Amendment 1 is obviously the first amendment made, James Madison wrote the first 10 amendments in 1789 (Head,3), the 10 amendments were eventually “ratified on December 15th, 1791, and formed what is the “bill of right”” (Bill of rights). There is a total of twenty-seven amendments, the last Amendment was ratified on May 7, 1992(Jacob Burns Law Library). There haven't been any amendments ever since, nor any thoughts of a new amendment. Amendment one is a very important amendment. It gives you the freedom of speech, religion, and the right to protest against the government.
“Freedom of expression is a fundamental human right. It reinforces all other human rights, allowing society to develop and progress.”(Timms). The freedom of speech is “ the right to express any opinions without censorship or restraint”(Dictionary). One thing included in this is “ the right not to speak” (U.S.Courts), “specifically the right to not salute the flag”(U.S.Courts). This makes sense only if it's not that person's flag(If the persons not from America). However, if they are from America then it is taken as disrespectful, but they still have the right to do so. As an example people who are for the Confederate flag. “they think of the flag as a symbol of the joys and values of being Southern”, “ symbol of southern pride”(Pressburg). There is also the right “to engage in symbolic speech”(U.S.Courts)or
Many laws and rights exist in the U.S.A. to keep people free and safe in this country. Individual rights exist to give people his or her freedoms, while that same freedom can allow people to take advantage of their freedoms. Freedom is the item that keeps the people of this country happy. People feel secure in what they are doing during their everyday lives. Public order is in place to keep society as a whole safe from misdeeds. Public order is also a system in place that restricts some freedoms that people may want. Freedoms are the ideals in life that everyone can take advantage of no matter who they are.
Boom! That’s the sound of someone dying from a firearm. In fact, a death from a gun occurs every 15 minutes. The United States has a critical gun issue with over 30,000 firearm related deaths a year, the highest out of every First World country, and it needs a solution. The solution is repealing the second amendment. The second amendment should be repealed because it is unneeded in modern times, owning a gun should be a privilege not a right, and repealing the
For instance, in the text “American Flag Stands for Tolerance” by William J Brennan on page 20 the author states, “More than anything else, the flag stands for free expression or ideas, no matter how distasteful.” This reveals that we have the right to use the flag to express ourselves freely in ways others may or may not agree with. Furthermore, according to the text “American Flag Stand for Tolerance” by William J Brennan on page 18-19 the author states, “Each individual is to have the freedom to develop by his or her own lights, and not by the command of officialdom. That requires not just the right to communicate with, to learn from, and test views in conversation.” This demonstrates that we have the right to speak what’s on our mind, to express ourselves freely whether or not what we say or do contradicts someone else’s points of view. We have different point of views, but also have the right to express
If I had to choose an amendment that I believe is the most important, it would the 19th amendment which states that “…the right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex” (National Archives and Records Administration, 2016). The reason I chose this amendment is because it gives women the right to vote, and I like the fact that it essentially put man and woman on the same footing in terms of voting for the one who will represent the country as President. Meanwhile, the amendment that I would like to see repealed is the 26th amendment, which talks about the legal voting age, because I do not someone who is 18 is mature enough to vote any issues pertaining
All of these freedoms mean you can do what you want as long as it does not harm someone else. That is all. But we, as Americans, are prone to believe the opposite. We believe that if you believe in this or that, then you will surely hurt someone. We believe any form of protest or being different is a bad thing. While I believe everyone has the right to do what they want, most do not feel that way. The First Amendment protects people from the people who think that different is a bad thing. That is what is good in our country and what we need to stand by, in my
First The amendment that I chose was the 19th amendment. This amendment was necessary becuase it gave a chance to people who wanted to give their opinion. This law gave them the chance to do what they wanted not what other people wanted. This gave them a chance to vote for whoever they wanted. Also people wanted the right but this amendment changed all that.It let the people have the right that they rightfully deserved. The amendment was the the medal that they have one. This amendment was this is the beginning of giving the people what they want.
When it comes to the Bill of Rights, which amendment would you say is the most important? When asked this question I will always say the first amendment. The first amendment is the biggest and baddest amendment of them all. This covers a lot of the freedoms that are valued by many. The First Amendment protects our freedom of religion, speech, press, the right to assemble and petition the government.
For years, there is a long going debate whether or not the Freedom of Speech is limited or not. However, thanks to the court case of Gitlow v. New York (1925) reminding us on what the importance of Freedom of Speech and Expression leading to the effectiveness of the 14th amendment does for us, do we have the basis to check on how the US is doing with the civil liberties after this instance that our founding fathers and framers have given to us in the first place.
Where would we be without the 4th, 5th, 6th, and 8th Amendments to the Constitution? In jail. We would be at the mercy of those with more power than we have, living without the safeguards against unreasonable search and seizure or protection against self-incrimination and double jeopardy. We would be subject to long incarcerations awaiting trial, held on unreasonable bonds and subjected to cruel and unusual punishments, the likes we have only read about. Simply put, those four Amendments truly protect our lives and liberties. That being said, without negating the importance of the other three amendments, I feel that the 4th Amendment to the Constitution is the most important Amendment. Realistically speaking, at least from the criminal
The first amendment gives U.S. individuals the right and freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition. The freedom of religion lets citizens to participate and hold religious beliefs, or not to. The freedom of speech consists of both verbal and nonverbal communication to express and be exposed to different opinions and views. The freedom of press permits the obtainment and publication of information or opinions without government control or punishment. The freedom of assembly enables the meeting with a group of people to protest for economic, political, or religious concerns. The freedom of petition allows citizens to take part in the process of
America is the only country that openly and notoriously celebrates its prejudice by proposing constitutional amendments to deny an entire class of people their basic human rights (UN. Declaration of human rights article 16). It was called "The Federal Marriage Amendment."
Refusing to stand for a nations flag is on on a rude disrespectful some say, others may say it's freedom of speech. But, what if you were a veteran and you bought for your country, would you want someone to Neil for the playing of the national anthem? Your son, that you worked so hard for. The national anthem please respect to the people who have Risk their lives, been injured, or died defending the United States.
Being an American means you have the freedom to express yourself. “Freedom means doing what I want to do, not what the government wants me to do” (49) in What is Freedom. Everyone has the right to speak and the right to state their opinions, within reason, in America. You would think that everyone all around the world has the right to say what they want, when they want but they don’t. In some countries if/when you speak upon a subject that the people in higher power do not condone in
Freedom of speech is quite possibly one of the most important tools we Americans are provided, but with great power comes great responsibility. For example, in the sixties, around the time of America’s controversial involvement Vietnam war, thousands of soldiers, black and white, were drafted into to the desperate and indiscriminate army. Now if you’ll recall this was also the time of extreme opposition and protest for black and “colored” rights. African Americans were angry with the government at the time and the way they were being treated at the time, but for the common good of their country, they did what the government told them was right, and went to South Vietnam to stop the communist North Vietnam advance into anti-communist South Vietnam.
The American flag, the simple three colored polyester recetangle, could easily be described as the cloth of our land. Millions of U.S. soldiers died for the fabric of our nation. However, they weren't fighting for liberty and free speech, they were fighting for the flag itself, later on, being buried in it. Yet, there are still people in this country who enjoy burning it. Those who believe this heinous act is okay might argue that the burning of the flag is a form of free speech. However, there have always been bounds set on 'free speech.'
