With the popular culture providing positive images of guns, the United States has a gun prevalence that is very rare in the modern world. While many people appreciate the “gun culture”, guns are heavily involved in violence in the United States. According to U.S. Department of Justice, since 1960, more than 750,000 Americans have died under firearms, including homicides, suicides, and unintentional injuries. The figure 1 provides a comprehensive survey of U.S. violent crimes for the period from 1993 to 2011.This figure illustrates that from 1993 to 2011, about 60% to 70% of homicides were associated with a firearm. Over the same period, between 6% and 9% of all nonfatal violence, with about 20% to 30% of robberies and 22% to 32% of aggravated assaults involving a firearm.
Honduras has the highest homicide rate in the world. (worldatlas.com) It’s a country that has been affected by imperialism multiple times throughout its history. In the early parts of the country's history, Honduras was imperialised by Spain and went through a couple of different political powers before becoming independent. During more recent times the U.S. used military force to gain control of the country in hopes to help the political uproar and failing country using imperialistic tendencies. Imperialism shaped Honduras into the country it is today by creating unnecessary wars leading to political tension, hindering the country’s economic and modern development and is continuing to shape the country by trying to reverse the adverse effect that imperialism had before.
Each year homicide and assault-related injuries result in an estimated $16 billion in combined medical and work loss (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/10/17/education-gun-violence-presidential-debate-2012_n_1974740.html). Gun violence may be broadly defined as a category of violence and crime committed with use of a firearm, it may or may not include actions ruled as self defense, actions for law enforcement. Gun violence is prevalent in African American Communities, although some might believe that it is not a racial issue ( CNN New’s stated “America’s Gun problem is not a race problem).
Despite existing gun laws already enacted, homicide rates from around the globe are augmenting yearly, resulting in an increase of innocent deaths. Several individuals have expressed that “When the homicide rate is disaggregated by age, it becomes clear that the increase in homicide after 1985 was driven almost entirely by a significant increase in homicides committed by juveniles (those under age 18) and youth (those between the ages of 18 and 24)” (Blumstein). With numerous guns still out in the open and
Among 100,000 African American men aged 15-19, 68 will die as the result of a homicide involving a gun, compared with about 6 among 100,000 white men in the same age group.
Thousands of U.S. citizens have visited Honduras every year to study, for business, and even tourism. However, the government lacks the resources to fully address crime and violence. The U.S. Department of State has issued a Travel Warning for Honduras since late 2012 (Miller, 2016). Honduras has one of the highest murder rates in the world. While not all the murder rates can be attributed to gang violence, there’s an estimated 7,000 street-gang members among approximately eight million people. They are not afraid to use violence and specialize in many illegal activities
From January 1, 2015 to December 23 of that same year a total of 12,942 people had been killed in America due to gun violence. These numbers include murders, accidental shootings, and murder suicides. According to a nonprofit website that records gun deaths in America called “Gun Violence Archive”, there were more than 50,000 gun violence incidents in 2015 alone. This includes homicides, gang incidents, and accidental and self-defense shootings, but it does not, however, include the near 20,000 American deaths due to gun suicides that occur each year.
It's no secret that shootings are a big problem within the United States, especially when comparing to other countries. Whether it be school shootings or mass shootings, it's become almost a regular occurrence. The more shootings that occur, more evidence increases relating gun violence to race. According to Statista, between 1982 and February 2018, 56 out of 97 mass shootings were the
On January 17, 2017, “Surge in the Violence” was released by the Crime lab at the University of Chicago, which had combined a report on the statistics of homicides taken place in the year 2015 and 2016. The number of homicides taken place in the year of 2016 has soared by record high of 67 percent than the previous year. Chicago is one of the busiest and advanced cities in the world and getting such high numbers in the field of crime is a shame and leaves a bad impression on the rest of the world. The violence related to guns has also increased enormously and according to “Chicago Tribune”, 2,958 people have been shot dead by now this year. Though the data shows that the homicides by gun has decreased significantly but the number is still a problem. The gun violence now is a serious problem and the current situation demands strict gun laws.
Every year more than 20,000 children, as well as a youth under the age of 20 years, face deaths and in other case injured by firearms in the US. The fact that guns are lethal, as well as the fact that there is ease of access to the guns by the young people, is the main explanation why firearms are the second cause of deaths among young people between 10 and 19 years. Most of these deaths are homicides while suicides account for approximately one-third of the deaths by gun among the young people, and unintentional shootings account for approximately 7% of the deaths. Among the homicides that have perpetrated by the young people in their school include the 2012-gun attack at Sandy Elementary where 28 people at the school killed. In the year 1927 in the bath school, there were 45 murders whereby the majority of the victims were children. At Virginia Tech, a gunman killed 33 victims in the year 2007 (Swanson, et al. 361-376).
In shootings where at least four people were murdered with firearms, fifty-four percent have been committed by intimate partners or family members (Ana Nogales). The atmosphere in which they, the mass shooters, live in plays a pivotal role in not only their life, but the lives of people they may not even know. Between 1990 and 2005, a gun was used to kill over two-thirds of spouse and ex-spouse homicide victims. When domestic violence and assault involve a firearm, statistics show that the result is twelve times as likely to end in a murder than a dispute using bodily force or other weapons like knives and such (Statistics). Domestic violence has always been a problem for as long as men and women have been together or married. But, in this day and age, these statistics could easily be lessened if boys and girls were taught more about emotions, equality, and respect. Rather than going after the guns themselves, why not go after the people using the guns, or even the reason WHY they use the
According to the According to the most recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, homicide is the leading cause of death for black men ages 15-34 nationwide. Gun violence usually occurs as result of frustrations taking place within extremely oppressed areas. When young kids don’t have a healthy outlet for expressing their anger, it can lead to violence and unnecessary crime.
Homicide is the second leading cause of death for 10 to 24 year olds. Out of this number nearly 85% of these crimes are committed with a gun.
Handguns were used most often in homicides, most cases being in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s before falling to a low in 2008 (Cooper, et al.). Most gun involvement occurs with gang related activity, which increased from 73% in 1980 to 92% in 2008 (Cooper, et al.). The percentage of homicide victims killed with a gun increased with age of the victim until age 17, where it peaked at 79% and declined thereafter (Cooper, et al.). The sharp increase in homicides from the mid-1980’s through the early 1990’s, and much of the subsequent decline, is attributable to gun violence by teens and young adults (Cooper, et al.). From 1980 to 2008, more
Crime, death, and destruction in Latin America is a big issue that’s spreading around the whole world. It’s becoming a worldwide problem and it needs to be fixed. Trafficking drugs to other countries and what not, are the main cause of crime, death and destruction of property in Latin America. “According to police data, these countries collectively saw 17,422 murders in 2015, 11% more than in 2014. However, there are signs the security challenges are changing, both in Northern Triangle and across Central America as a whole.” This shows that murders are occurring more often than they should. El Salvador is increased in murders between 2014-15 and its one of the highest in the world. The
