In the painting Independence Day in Center Square, painted by John Lewis Krimmel, the celebration of Fourth of July is depicted.1 This work, completed in 1819, takes place in the large city of Philadelphia. While looking at the painting, one can see Center Square, Philadelphia is full of raucous people that are supposed to be there to celebrate this holiday. However, if one looks closely at the painting, in the right bottom corner it can be seen that a woman tries desperately to hand out temperance posters. Obviously, this woman was not there to celebrate the victory over the British 43 years
After reading Dave Barry’s essay entitled “Independence Day” I can tell Dave has a caustic tone about this holiday. One of the reasons I believe that he has this tone is when he was talking about the menu for the evening. He said for the traditional menu you would have “hamburgers so undercooked that when people try to eat them, they leap off the plate and frolic on the lawn like otters.” Another place that Dave was sarcastic is when he stated that our grandparents generation time spent on cranking homemade ice cream was the cause of The Great Depression. Also, I would say that the essay has a whimsical tone to it as well. My favorite part of the essay was “The Star Spangled Banner” that Dave wrote, “And the grill parts’ red glare; Flaming

Over the course of the past 239 years, celebrating the Declaration of Independence has become a boozy, bikini-clad, barbeque-filled party. And while there’s nothing wrong with celebrating your patriotism by spending a few hours in the sun and watching fireworks with friends and family, there is so much more to being an American that can be celebrated every day. We are Americans 365 days of the year, not just on the 4th of July, and it is our duty to remember this and to respect our nation, every day of the year. So how can each individual do his or her part to keep Patriotism of the 4th alive on the 5th and every day after that?
When Veteran’s Day became an official holiday in the United States, Americans honored them by giving out discounts or free items for that day. Many restaurants such as Applebee’s and Olive Garden give discounts or free food to veterans as a thank you to them for their service. Some veterans wear their uniforms when going out on this day. Some places have parades for the veterans in honor of them. Memorial Day and Independence Day in some Americans eyes can be considered a time to honor veterans as well. On Independence Day most Americans wear red, white and blue and shoot off fireworks and play music not only to celebrate America’s birthday, but to honor all the men and women who died in battle as well as honor the ones that are alive.
Boom, boom, boom. “Mommy, that one is my favorite!” Screams a blonde haired, blue eyed five year old little girl as fireworks screech into the midnight sky over the crystal blue lake on the Fourth of July. Nearly two-hundred and forty years ago our beloved land was born, gaining independence from Great Britain and declaring America as its own. From that day forward July Fourth would be celebrated with parades, festivals, and get-togethers across the nation. Red, white, and blue blanketing towns, patriotic music blaring through speakers, and fireworks shooting into the night sky, all to celebrate the birth of our nation. Across America no matter what day it is, the Star Spangled Banner flies high, to represent the passion and love Americans have for their homeland; however, present day issues are rivaling the foundation our Founding Fathers built the Untied States around.
