In Warren’s article concerning infanticide and her view on the issue, she makes it clear to make a distinct separation from her stance regarding abortion since people have thought that her article on abortion led to a similar belief about infanticide. Because abortion and infanticide are so closely related, Warren wanted to discuss how they should be treated as morally different situations. She explains that infanticide is not the same as abortion, since the fetus has already been born. Thus, once the infant is born, it no longer is violating any rights against the mother since she does not have the physical connection to the baby as she did when it was inside of her. The baby would not technically need its birth-mother to survive if she …show more content…
In the online story, the issue of apathy regarding abortion is focused on by the author, saying that too many people lack sympathy for both “survivors” of abortion, botched abortions, as well as the fetuses that are aborted and have had their organs “harvested” and sold. The article includes quotes from two women that survived attempted abortion procedures, which incline readers to sympathize with them as well as be more open to their beliefs regarding abortion since they have a direct connection to it. This emotional draw is used with seemingly true facts plus a religious push that together make a compelling reason to believe abortion is immoral. Throughout the article, it mentions the “harvesting” and selling of fetal organs, in this case a brain, but the author makes it seem like centers that perform abortion, such as Planned Parenthood, do so in order to only make simply make a profit in order to benefit themselves - however, this is not the case as I learned by researching the topic. Planned Parenthood states that they only extract fetal tissue “with full, appropriate consent from patients and under the highest ethical and legal standards. There is no financial benefit for tissue donation for either the patient or for Planned Parenthood” (Levitan, 2015). They do not sell fetal organs in order to make money, if that were true, surely
Should abortion be allowed in the United States? If so, then under what circumstances? Abortion has been one of the most heatedly debated topics in the U.S. for more than a century. This paper explores the history and international use of abortion, as well as the empirical and moral claims made by both sides of the issue. We will also examine the key positions taken on abortion and look at those affected by it. Based on extensive research and analysis, this paper will recommend that the government increase abortion funding and availability.
Abortion has been and still is one of the most controversial topics in American culture. The reason for the controversy is the different viewpoints of this very personal matter. Some believe that abortion is the same as murder. Others believe it’s a personal choice which only they have the right to make. Due to the nature of the procedure and the concerns associated with ending a pregnancy, abortion will continue to top the list of “touchy” subjects in American politics and culture. As a pro-choice advocate, it is important for the right to have an abortion to be established and protected.
Warren felt that a fetus can meet none of the cases for personhood and therefore abortion should be legal without
Her argument does not specify if the same reasoning can be applied to fetuses. Not specifying which certain traits are needed to be classified as a person opens up questions for critics saying that it is not wrong for infanticide because an infant is not more of a person than a fetus according to her arguments. Although her response about this is that infanticide is not just because it deprives the infants from people that care about them and can find happiness along their side. A person might want to raise these infants and the reason why they should be put into orphanages. In the end Warren’s argument is contradicting that infanticide is morally wrong because it deprives form having
Even on the patient consent form, patients at Planned Parenthood sign a form that says “I agree to give my blood and/or the tissue from the abortion as a gift to be used for education, research or treatment.” for scientic research on diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, cancer and AIDS. A professor of University of Wisconsin-Madison’s law, medicine and public health, explains that it makes sense that money is involved in the procurement of tissue and organs, even if that involves fetal specimen. The professor, R. Alta Charo says, “It’s been going on for 50 or 60 years; it’s ordinary practice,” she says. “There is good reason for it. We want to help the people who are living or may be living in the future.” But according to Eric Ferrero, vice president of communications at Planned Parenthood Federation of America, says the research has advanced vaccines, treatments for life-threatening diseases, and goes toward finding cures for specific maternal and infant health conditions. The National Institutes of Health Revitalization Act even allows for “reasonable payments associated with transportation, implantation, processing, preservation, quality control, or storage of human fetal issue.” This law doesn’t define “reasonable payments”, so violations can be difficut to prove. Most Planned Parenthood facilities and any abortion provider don’t have control over how fetal tissue is ultimately used and many women (patients) are uninformed of the possibilities of how their “donation” is used in the consent forms. Research to develop skin cosmetics and anti-aging products has also benefitted from the collecting of fetal tissue (non-medical) and there isn’t a standing law that prevents
Planned Parenthood is illegally selling fetal tissue, fetal parts, and overall the Company's directors don’t care for these illegal actions because it’s extra money. Human being’s deserve a life even in the womb life matters. Fetals have a word too not just the person behind the knife.
In Mary Anne Warren’s “The Abortion Issue,” children are not persons in the empirical sense. Warren believes that prior to a certain point in a pregnancy, the child does not have “the capacity to understand” the ramifications of what an abortion would be, therefore the abortion does not infringe upon the rights of the unborn fetus. She states that: “…in the ways that matter from a moral point of view, human fetuses are very unlike human persons, particularly in their early months of development”(152). In essence, personhood as defined by Warren can only come after the first trimester. Before that time, the fetus does not have the sentience that would make it a person. Warren’s main criteria for
Over the course of time, selective infanticide has been heavily debated and surrounded by much controversy. Harriet Johnson’s piece “Unspeakable Conversations” navigates through the discourse between Johnson and selective infanticide advocate Peter Singer. Real world applications of the social and medical model of disability are embedded all throughout Johnson’s personal account of her encounters with Singer, causing audiences to think of these models in ways other than textbook applications. The work written by Johnson was published very recently, and it is evident that the controversy surrounding selective infanticide at the time of its publication is still present today. Johnson’s piece on selective infanticide offers a stance on the matter that should not be ignored because it is coming from someone disabled. Further analyzation of the text provided will support this claim.
Mary Anne Warren is one of the top advocates for keeping abortion legal without any restrictions on it. She states that the morality of abortion is dependent on the moral status of the baby, not simply on the rights of the mother. She criticizes those who defend abortion as the right to control one's body: "it is at best a rather feeble argument for the permissibility of abortion. Mere ownership does not give me the right to kill innocent people whom I find on my property…" (The Monist, pg. 44) Using this analogy she shows that just because the fetus is inside us it does mean we have a right to terminate it.
“On the Moral and Legal Status of Abortion”, an essay written by Mary Anne Warren, defend abortion in any stage of a woman’s pregnancy (pg 468). Warren argues that the potential to become a human being is not the same as being human and deserving the same right to life (pg. 468-472). This essay asserts that in order to be human, one must possess five particular traits (pg. 470). These trait are consciousness, reasoning, self-motivated activity, the ability to communicate, and awareness of oneself (pg. 470). Warren claims that since a fetus has not yet acquired all of the traits, then that fetus is not human and therefore does not have the right to life (pg. 470).
A long on-going subject that has been greatly debated in our society is abortion. Many people argue that because the baby in the mother’s womb is not alive, aborting him or her is not considered a murder. However, others say that as the baby’s heart and brain are the first things to develop, the baby is technically alive and killing it would be a murder. As soon as the baby has a heartbeat, it has life. Abortion has many characteristics of a murder, including the killing of one human being by another, it’s unethical, and it is done without the consent of the person.
In the Merriam Webster dictionary, infanticide is a term described as the act of killing an infant. Other sources describe it as the act of killing one’s own child, or killing of a child less than 12 months old. Female infanticide is more common than the killing of male offspring. More often than not, it is the mother who does the killing.
Abortion may be one of the most ongoing disagreements throughout time, some may consider this act as wrong such as specified in this quote by Mother Teresa: “The greatest destroyer of peace is abortion because if a mother can kill her own child, what is left for me to kill you and you to kill me? There is nothing between.” Abortion not only murders an unborn child, causes guilt for the mother’s decision to end her pregnancy and may cause problems to the mother’s health; abortion is irreversible that child will not have life. Some women having an abortion can suffer from damage to the uterus, internal bleeding including having pieces of the baby left inside her body causing difficulties. By means of ending the pregnancy, the mother may
Abortion The topic of Abortion is one of the most controversial of our times. It has caused countless deaths and several violent confrontations between the two separate parties of opinion. The fight between pro-life and pro-choice supporters has been long and brutal. This is because, despite what several people may believe, abortion is neither right nor wrong. It is a matter of personal opinion and it varies from person to person. In this way, each side can say with certainty that the other side is wrong. Therefore, the question remains; should abortion be legal? Though some may disagree on this point, the fact that legalizing abortion is the only option that will protect the lives of American citizens. This is all because of the
It is regrettable that female infanticide and foeticide are rapidly decreasing the female population throughout India. The main factors that is responsible for the increase in the incidence of female infanticide and foeticide is the low status of women, son preference, and the practice of dowry across all casts groups.
