Prostate Cancer
Origin/Overview
The prostate is a gland in the male reproductive system, about the size of a walnut and surrounds the urethra. One of its main functions is that it produces a fluid that makes up part of the semen. As men age, the prostate may enlarge and expand, and in the enlarged state, it begins to block the flow of urine. This is a symptom of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) and while not cancerous, surgery is required to correct urine flow. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the United Sates after skin cancer, and it’s the 2nd leading cause of death from cancer in men. Almost all prostate cancer cases are classified as adenocarcinomas, meaning that

For example, age is the biggest factor. We all know that as men age and get older they run a higher chance of their prostate enlarging and developing cancer. Family history and race are also the other two big ones. If people in your immediate family have had the cancer, then you run a higher risk of contraction because you’re already genetically predisposed to getting prostate cancer. Also, African American men are more likely to be diagnosed with the cancer, with white and Hispanic men following behind. According to the CDC, from the years 1999-2013, black men had higher mortality and contraction rates than men of other races and ethnicities.1 Hormones are also a risk factor; should the male be producing a lot of testosterone could put him at risk.
Statistics
In the United States, it’s estimated that roughly 1 in 5 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. According to the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results program (SEER) of the National Cancer Institute, “the number of new cases of prostate cancer was 129.4 per 100,000 men per year. The number of deaths was 20.7 per 100,000 men per year. These rates are age-adjusted and based on 2009-2013 cases and
Cancer is a word that no one wants to hear or think about, however there are many people
The risk factors for prostate cancer are normally a matter of age, race, and family history. It is somewhat out of your control. However, seeking medical advice and detecting the prostate cancer early is one important “man” strategy.
The best treatment for the prevention of cancer is early detection. In September, The National Football League (NFL) teamed up with Cancer Treatment Centers of America and LabCorp to educate men about the risks of prostate cancer and to offer Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) screening.
The normal prostate is a small squishy gland about the size of a walnut and is located under the bladder and in front of the rectum. The urethra runs directly through the prostate (McCance, & Huether, 2014). The nerves that control erectile function are attached to the sides of the prostate. It is a gland that is important for reproduction. The prostate gland undergoes first growth spurt during puberty and a second growth spurt during the fifth decade of life. BPH is a non-cancerous prostatic condition that develops at the transition zone that surrounds the urethra or urinary tube, due to the imbalance between androgen and estrogen secretion causing hyperplasia (Timms, & Hofkamp, 2011). Major symptoms of BPH is caused by this hyperplasia, which obstructs the urethra and bladder.
The question is what treatment I would chose, and this wasn’t an easy choice to make since there is still clinical trials going on and surgery sometimes isn’t the answer. So I chose radiation treatment therapy. Since there are different forms of radiation therapy it can be used in early stages of prostate cancer and also advanced and recurrent prostate cancer.
Prostatic Hypertrophy is enlarged prostate gland. The prostate gland is surrounded by the urethra which carries urine from the bladder out of the body. This prostatic hypertrophy does occur in all men at a different age and not an issue to worry about. It is very common in males above 75 years of age.
Cancer is a global health problem that affects millions of people across the globe, especially in developing nations. The increase in cases of cancer is likely to increase the global burden of disease by a great percentage. Particularly, reproductive cancers such as cervical and prostate cancers are among the top causes of cancer-related morbidity and mortality. Although prostate cancer ranks close to the tenth position among cancer-related deaths, it is the second most common form of cancer among men. Consequently, men diagnosed with this disease have diverse and severe experiences depending on the stage of cancer and the associated pain. Kelly Krumwiede and Norma Krumwiede in their 2012 article The Lived Experience of Men Diagnosed with
Cancer. One word, a million different emotions. Cancer is a term used to describe a group of diseases in which abnormal cells divide and invade other tissues at an uncontrollable rate. Cancer cells rapidly travel through blood and lymph systems to other parts of the body. With over 100 different types of cancers this year alone over 500,000 Americans are expected to die from cancer, making it the second leading cause of death in the US. (TLCF,2014- Thomas Latimer Cancer Foundation) Among the vast forms of cancer, prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in American men after skin cancer. Prostate cancer affects males as it is found in the prostate gland an organ found in the male reproductive system. Prostate cancer has many faucets
The disease epidemiology has also been researched in different sub-populations. In a cohort of men that underwent screening for prostate cancer, Peyronie's disease prevalence was 8.9%. Significantly higher prevalence of 15.9% is seen in men after radical prostatectomy. Furthermore, in men evaluated for erectile disfunction, Peyronie's disease was found in 7.9% of individuals. Diabetes has also been identified as a potential risk factor for the development of this condition.
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or an enlarged prostate is a common urological condition in ageing males. At least 50% of men over age 50 have some degree of prostatic enlargement. This can cause complications such as Frequent urination, UTI’s, blood in the urine, trouble urinating, and a slow flow in the urination. When the, When the Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia occurs in the second stage of growth, the prostate becomes enlarged and begins to push down on the urethra, which causes a blockage and restricts the flow of the urine and when this occurs a transurethral resection of the prostrate is the treatment of choice. “According to” TURP is the second most common surgical procedure in men over 65 years.
- The prostate is a small gland about the size of a walnut at the base of the man’s bladder in front of the rectum. surrounding the urethra just below the bladder.
Benign prostatic hyperplasia also called BPH is a condition that occur in men because of the enlargement of the prostate gland that have no linkage to cancer but is identified as a benign tumor as a result of a prostate obstruction in urination. It can be either acute or chronic but it’s mainly chronic and have a steady growth process. Acute benign prostatic hyperplasia is sudden onset due to reflux of voiding such as urinary retention (inability to urinate or postponing voiding). Chronic benign prostatic is gradual and ongoing onset and largely developed from complications of bladder dysfunction and kidney damage. Benign prostatic hyperplasia is normal but symptoms can be prevented with a proper nutritional diet,
The prostate is a compound tubuloalveolar exocrine gland of the male reproductive system in most mammals. It differs anatomically, chemically and physiology in different species, the main function of the prostate is to secrete liquid substances alkaline in nature (urine, semen). It is located beneath bladder and in front of the rectum. The prostate also produces prostate specific antigen. Prostate specific antigen (PSA) keeps semen in liquid form so sperm can swim. Prostate cancer is cancer that starts in the prostate. Prostate cancer is slow growing in some people, while in some its shows rapid growth. The bones and lymph nodes are also affected by the cancer cells. Affecting the bones and lymph nodes cause hinders the production of red blood
Prostate cancer is not the same all around the world in the sense that it does not affect people of all cultures in the same rate. For example, the rate of prostate
Prostate cancer is one of the most common sexual diseases men. It rarely causes death in men younger than 50 years old “For older men with prostate cancer, a focus on prevention and management of comorbid health conditions is an important aspect of their health” (Ketchandji, Melanie, et al. 29), and most of deaths occur in men who are older than 75 year old (Qaseem, Denberg, Owens, & Shekelle, 2013). African American men have higher risk of getting prostate cancer than all other men (Oliver, 2007). Prostate cancer is a disease where malignant cells are detected in the prostate. Prostate is a very important sexual glad for all men it is located below the bladder, and its job is to make a fluid that becomes a part of semen.
