In the emergent age of technology, it is difficult to ignore the immense advantage that the Internet has to offer. It is then without a doubt that the use of social media is beneficial to activism due to its ability to spread information quickly more than ever before, and to a much larger audience. A social media campaign is a beneficial resource for attracting activists to a cause because it is a useful mean for mass communication; it propagates global support, and allows for the recruitment of marginal group members. Specifically, social media facilitates the communication and connectivity between leaders and the grass root members, emphasizes group unity, and more readily motivates the involvement of otherwise apathetic individuals. With that being said, the beneficial influence of the Internet can no longer be overlooked; instead, it should be embraced and implemented to its full potential to ensure the success activism campaigns. Social media is effective at improving the efficiency of existing social orders, and helps organize and support social movements. Indeed, social media is often credited with the ability to improve existing collective actions because it creates adaptable networks (Gladwell, 2010), provides anonymity for freedom of expression (Postmes & Brunsting, 2004), and organizes actions to garner greater support (Starbird & Palen, 2012). He makes a clear distinction between traditional activism, which implies sacrifices and physical devotion, and current activism, based on social networks. The writer considers that “social media can’t provide what social change has always required” (Gladwell, paragraph 1).

(Goldstein) It is a fact that the Egyptian Revolution of 2011 lasted just over two weeks but in such a short time it definitely brought about significant historical changes politically, socially, and economically. These 18 days were definitely pivotal in destroying a 30-year-old regime and government corruption. Although the regime was widely accepted by the majority of Egyptians, this revolution proved just how feeble the existing regime really was. Mainly, because of all the economic downturn that Egypt was experiencing due to the heavy corruption that had engulfed the political system of the country under Mubarak’s leadership. This financial depression included: an increase in unemployment, constant rising poverty, social and economic inequality, and a very high debt. This brief yet highly effective revolution was initially described by news clips and reporters as consisting of non-violent actions such as demonstrations, marches, the overtaking of plazas, non-violent civil resistance, acts of civil disobedience and various levels of strikes. An article written by Andrea Moncada, begins her argument with the question has social media had the same impact on advocacy. Similar to Gladwell’s points of view, Moncada states, “social media can help get the word around, but participants must be united by a core message and traditional methods…” This source of uncertainty is the basis for its support and is understandable.
As technology develops rapidly in the modern society, the broad social influence it brings is also widely discussed, especially about its effects on social change. In the past, social movements were raised without the help of technology, specifically without social media, whereas social media has recently played a non-ignorable role. The connection between social media and social activisms concerned, here come some different voices. Few people maintain that social media now has no practical influence on social change, while others hold the opposite view, thinking social media is already a crucial factor in it. Personally speaking, I agree with the second kind of view: it is true that social media is not able to create social movements by itself in today’s world, but it plays an important and essential part in making real social change.
